We are having a small immediate family wedding in our backyard but are getting married by a pastor from our home town about 1.5 hours away. After the ceremony, we are having a nice dinner and celebrating...Do I have our pastor conduct the 30 min ceremony and then drive back 1.5 hours or do I have him stay for the immediate family reception (awkward?)?

Welcome to OW!
![]() I think if I were in your situation I would invite the pastor to stay and let him make the decision whether or not he wants to. He may just choose to stay for dinner and then head home or he may not even choose to join you all. I would definetely extend the invitation and leave it up to your pastor..

As a general rule, you should invite the pastor to stay for the dinner. Since it is someone from your hometown, I would guess that this person would at least know part of your family so it wouldn't exactly be a total stranger. And he may decline the invitation, but especially someone coming from a pretty good distance, it is really nice to extend the invitation.

I agree with the other wonderful ladies! Extend the invitation and then it's up to him to decide if it feels awkward or if he'd like to celebrate with the couple he just wed.

It is customary to invite the person who performs the ceremony. Many times (like most priests, for Catholic weddings) they don't come anyway. But be prepared for the pastor to stick around, especially with that commute.

Just invite him, he will have done it before and he knows how to handle this. I don't think he'll be at your party dancing drunk in the fountain or something

Yes, I agree that you should invite him to stay. He probably won't, but I would offer and be prepaired if he decides to.
