And to hear the stories behind them, too.

Brandi ... I am not a tatoo person but I do appreciate the art. There is obviously so much time and skill put into each of those. Can I ask how each one took (on average) & what something like that would cost (on average)?
I heard recently, that they have almost perfected the permanent tatoo that can be completely reomoved painlessly. If so I might bite .... LOL we'll see.

Mine range in cost from about $60 to $700 (the big one on my back) and they took anywhere from 15 mins to 6 hours.

I don't have any pics (will take some soon), but I have two.
One on my left ankle, the symbol for "Zen". I got it when I was 21 and was really into studying eastern religion and philosophy. It changed the way I looked at life and myself. I got it colored in with yellow, orange, and red...to symbolize a sunrise....my new beginning. That way when I see it, I remember to see things in a more spiritual, fresh way.
The other is on the small of my back. It's a big butterfly. I got it about 5 years ago when I was having the most happy time in my life up to that point. It was meant to symbolize butterflies in your stomach...that "alive" feeling.
FH jokes that he's going to get a butterfly net tattoo. :grinhappy:

Here are mine!
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c153/secretsandlies2005/Tattoo1.jpg
That was right after I got it done, so you can't really see that the dolphins are blue. The tattoo is starting to fade out, so I'll have to get it touched up in the next 2-5 years.
This one's my favorite:
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c153/secretsandlies2005/Larrytattoo2.jpg
This one cost $200 and took about an hour. I had to buy the pattern online :snide: and take it to the tattoo parlor. And yes, that is my fiance's name! It's on the small of my back. That was the most painful of them all. I could feel the pain shooting up into my shoulder blades! Ouch!
My next one will be of a tiny nautical star, most likely on my wrist. And then, I'm DONE! LOL

It's interesting that I was just talking with Katy and Brandi about tattoos the other day :)
I don't have any yet, and will probably only get one, but I think I am going to get the word Agape (In greek letters, the greek word for Love) on the top of my foot, but only once I decided that, that is without a doubt exactly what I want.

Ok another thing I have always wondered about .... fading. Do they all fade or do some fade because the artist didn't do it properly - ie reach the "proper" needle depth?
LOL I was curious what the "hourly" rate worked out to be. $700 - not bad for say 6 hours work.

They will all fade a little with time, as we all shed skin as we age. But if it is done right and you take propper care of it (stayinmg out of the sun and such) then it shouldn't be all that noticable.
My oldest one is like 17 yrs old and it still looks nice :)
The shop I go to has a $100 per hour rate, but they won't do anything for less than $50 and custom things sometimes cost more. I know other shops that are a bit less and others that are upwards of $200 an hour!

I don't have any pictures, but I have three. They're all small, I have an ankh on my left ankle, a phoenix on my left shoulder with my departed father's badge number underneath it, and on my right shoulder I have this cool spikey sci-fi style butterfly. I got that one the year I became pregnant with my son.
Very soon I'll be getting my belated birthday present, this girl right here on my back (warning: she is bare chested ;) )
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v88/attachmentfeminist/pirategirl6copy.jpg
It's going to say "Cap'n Byrd" underneath instead of the anchors thing. I worked at Renaissance fairs my entire young life where the theme of the business was pirates, and I think she demonstrates that part of my life perfectly. I'll have her before I get married.
I'm also planning on getting a chinese dragon that wraps around my side over my hip from my stomach to my rear, to symbolize my mother. And if anything ever happens to FH, I've designed a quarter sleeve with the things that are most important to him (besides me, but I'm me, so I don't really need to demonstrate that in the tattoo :D )
I also want to get something done on my right calf at some point, but I don't know what. I love tattoos!

I have only one for now. When I am all done having babies I am getting my last and second one...Not sure yet what, but something with angels and the kids names. I have one on my left thigh that I got about 6 years ago. I'm sorry I don't have any pics but its of a green lizard! It's not very big but it's also not all that small. There is a story behind it..
It's not in memory of anyone but more of a reminder for me...
I got it not long after my great grandma and two of my friends brad (who commited suicide) and michelle ( was killed in a car crash) all died in the same week over my spring break in college. I was to go away that week to see my BF at the time who was stationed in Seatle. Well, I got this horrible gut instinct not to go and all of a sudden decided not to. Even after buying plane tickets, reserving my hotel room, and everything. I just had that bad feeling so I instead of going, I went home to my parents. I'm glad that I did. Anyhow, the lizard represents that gut instinct and for me to always listen it..I know it's corny but I wanted to get something that no one would know what it would be or even know why I had it unless I told them. That's why I kind of went with the cute green lizard..I call it listening to my inner lizard now...lmao..now that one was corny..

Actually 100$/hour rate sounds reasonable. They're artists putting a permanent mark on someone else's skin. Very stressful because they can't mess up. And I'm not sure they work constantly either. It's not like most salons ALWAYS have a tattoo to do. It's a bit like being a simultaneous interpreter - very intense when you're working, but you don't always have work to do. And since it's so intense, it's only natural that you should be paid more.

I've got 3.5 so far, but plans for many, many more....
I started with a tiny little yellow daisy on my ankle... I've had it for years and years and I don't have any pics of it.
Later, I got a small (TINY) red heart right over the crack of my hiney... a few years later, I had a heavy black tribal piece added around it. That piece is going to be the groundwork for a BIG black and grey piece that will cover most of my lower back. I might even go for something kinda scattered and loose across my whole back.
Can't see it completely (it's actually below "see level" - you can't see it above even low rise jeans), but part of it:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b247/neebelung/DSC04614small.jpg
Then earlier this year, I got a series of life-size Rock Sandpiper tracks, as a tribute to my Gramma, who passed away last year. I love them, but now I do want to go back and get some shading around them to give it more dimension. (this was the day I got them)
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b247/neebelung/sandpipertracks.jpg
And then FH and I have been working on a design together for the last two years... at the center of both will be a celtic eternity knot, but mine will be surrounded by water of some sort, and his with fire (elements we identify with). They'll be similar, but not identical.

I have two and want to get one more. I really do not have any pictures of them odd.
I have one on my lower back of Hawaiian flowers and a tribal design, I was 17 and wish I would have thought that through a bit hahaha
The one on my ankle is a breast cancer ribbon and a daisy inside. My mom had breast cancer and Daisy are my most FAVORITE flowers, my mom and I are super close so I wanted something that honored that.I LOVE it and always look at it.
The best part about getting a tattoo with meaning to you, you can look at it and remember the exact time you got it, the exact person you got it with/for and what you were feeling at that exact moment. Its like a scrapbook on you! I love it and hope to get one someday to honor my DH. I know that no matter if we stay together or don't he will be a person in my life either in memory or in person. So I want something to remember this time of my life. Not sure what, but we will design it together!

I wanted to get a tattoo to symbolize our marriage too. I already know what I want and everything. People tell me I'm crazy (It'll be small and hidden) but I'm not! This marriage is a part of my life. Whether or not we stay together this is something that I have experienced in my life and I want to commemerate that. It won't be his name, but it will be a small tattoo to remind me of this time in my life.

I got a fairy because...well...they always seem so carefree without a worry in the world...I want to be like that. Soon I hope. I want many more, haha. I want my star...Scott always told me he'd give a star if he could so I found a way for it to happen, haha. And I always want a track of dog paws across my foot...its fitting with how often my big babies steph on my feet, haha.

I've considered getting one or 2. My friend has 3 now. One on her foot of a shooting star that she designed, a small dragonfly on her left inner wrist and about a couple weeks ago she got a reddish orange lily under her dragonfly. We want to get a matching music note on one of our big toes, just a small one. And I thought of "07.07.07" somewhere but not sure. Chris would kick my butt if I got any tats.

Actually I think I would like something tiny maybe on a toe :) I hadn't thought of it. Daniel wouldn't like tattoos on me (he told me so!) and I wouldn't want something I could get tiered of, but if it's really discreet and tiny it's not a bad idea :)

I have one. I had a pciture of it but will need to get another one. I have a set of small flowers on the back of my right shoulder. They are very colorful. They curve with my shoulder. I think there is liek 7 or 8 with the biggest flower in the center and they get smaller as they go down. I have had it for about 4 yrs now and it has not faded too much at all. It is my first and I want more.
I want a Unisus ( unicorn with wings ) on my lower back. That will hurt I lknow and will be expenzive. I a;so have a picture of a spiral rainbow I want down as a tattoo but not sure wear to put it. This sibolizes my husbands and my computer names. Seeing that is where we met I would love to have this done.

well you won't believe this, as i couldnt' believe i did it as well. no i didn't get myself a tattoo but i let my DD. she has been after me for over a year for one. she is 17 and i broke down and let her. why you ask? i have always wanted one myself and figured at 45 i am just to old for it. so i thought let her express herself the same. she done very well on choosing what she wanted. it is so cute. she got a flower burst (sorta like a sun burst) on the back of her neck. it is outlined in black and inside the flower petals is purple with the center being orange/yellow. it really is cute.
