Elly and I started a thread about our given & how people have insisted on shortening them. This begs the question -

What is your given name?
What name(s) do you answer to?
What shortened name(s) do you not like people to use?

My name is Elizabeth

I thought Liz was a "cool" name so I used that in highschool but I came to dislike the name so, I started using Elizabeth after I graduated.

I do not like Liz and I don't let people use it. For some reason, no one has ever tried to call me Beth. I will only permit some (my mother's "older" friends) to call me Betsy or Betty

Hugh is Hugh - period.
One runs the risk of personal bodily injury if they call him anything else.
He has been called Hughey, Huge (I think this one is pretty funny) and Hugue (French for Hugh - sounds like HuuuuuuGe - long U/Hard G
A friend of ours gave him the nickname Hug during a weekend away with friends - only the people who were at that weekend can call him that.

A friend of mine calls me Mish but other than that I don't go by anything else. (Unless you want to count my nickname which is Moose - my dad came up with that when I was around 12 and it stuck but only my parents and bro call me that - actually, when my nephews were young they couldn't say Michelle - I taught them Moose so they call me Aunt Moose).

I HATE when people call me Jackie, just in another post I told a story that happens a lot... "Hi, my name is Jacklynn, nice to meet you." "Oh nice to meet you too Jackie" I HATE that if I tell you my name is Jacklynn call me that, at least until you find out what you can and can't call me lol.

My parents have always called me Jack though, and Matthew tends to call me that a lot when he is talking TO me, but he generally calls me Jacklynn if he is talking ABOUT me. It's funny though because my grandpa's name is Jack, so at family get-togethers if they call for him, I'm always like WHAT! oh... not me.... lol

I totally agree. I answer the phone at work by saying "*Company name*, Elizabeth speaking". One of my distributors always says "Hi Liz, it's Doug at *Company name*"

When I first started working there, I didn't want to tick anyone off (least of all a distributor) so I didn't say anything but now ... I always end the call with "Goodbye Dougie :)". Even still, I am not sure he's ever "got it"!

My parents called me terry from my birth and I was terry till graduation. AFter that i made everyone i ran into call me treasia. in fact the only ones that still call me terry is my family. jerry didn't even know that was what they called me, till one night after i moved in and mom called and asked to speak to "terry". jerry told her no one by that name lived here. mom has never let him forget it either. lol

Cindy - as in, no, it's NOT short for Cynthia.

There's not much short for Cindy....so I usually get called by my name (unless it's a pet name). :grinhappy:


There's nothing people call me that I don't like. But I can't stand it when someone spells my name "Cyndi" or "Cindee". :irked: If anyone asks me to spell it, I always say, "C-I-N-D-Y....the right way."

Funny how you switched to Liz after highschool and I switched back to Elizabeth. LOL My middle name is Joan - close :)

I have been all three names by choice lol. When i was little my family called me Beth. About 3rd grade I decided I didn't like it, so I decided to start writing Elizabeth on all my papers, but nobody would call me that lol, so when my parents made my brother and I switch schools I choose to go by Elizabeth. Then in high school my friends started to call me Liz, which I liked but had never gone by b/c I have an aunt we call Liz and it would have been confusing. So when I started working I told them they could call me Liz, same with college. I don't really like to be called Beth, just b/c it makes me feel like a kid, I guess, but it mostly family that doesn't see me a lot that stilll call me Beth. The only people that call me Lizzie are a few guys I used to work with just b/c they were trying to be cute and thought it would annoy me lol. I'm not picky, though, as long as it isn't mean!

My close family will call me 'Stacer or Sissy' but they call my sister sissy, too, so.. Oh! i also get called 'Daniele' a lot! But thats because thats my twins name..

my given name is saunya. you cant really shorten that to anything. i never really had any nicknames from friends. but i did get a few from my brother. one was i was in navy cadets and he called me private Bean. and then it was just Bean. and then there is this big sign that says "BIRD INSURANCE" and i that it was hilarious so now my whole family calls me Byrd. i changed the I to a Y in middle school so it looked like an actual name lol. what i hate the most is when people pronounce either my first or last name wrong.

EVERYONE else calls me nicole. Once in awhile a friend calls me Nic and I know it's Nic and not Nik. Ya it's wierd. But if a co worker was to call me nikki from afar i wouldn't even turn my head, cuz aside from family it's always Nicole.

Actually in 3rd grade me & my best friend nicki my MOH were in the same class. Our names were very similar Nickola M. Messina and Nicole M. Miceli. That is when we established her as Nicki and me as Nicole. I was all upset when she got married 5 yrs ago cuz we weren't gonna have the same initials anymore. But we both ended up with last names beginning with C!
