View Full Version : Am I wrong for being upset?

I'm 23 years old and am having many teeth issues. When I was a kid my mother and father insisted that I never needed to go the dentist. When I first went I was 10 and had 8 cavities. All together they took me twice. One when I was 10 and the other when I was 18 and the dentist came out and told me that my teeth were bad for a 23 year old and that I needed nearly $5,000 of work done....she saw that and told me you're on your own.

But here in Vegas, companies don't really offer and benefits...and I just started with the news tv station almost 3 months ago and my benefits start in Sept...thank goodness. My teeth in the back are starting to decay :( I've already had one pulled and there's another one chipped and then there is another one with the top half gone and then there's another one that has absolutely no center to the tooth. Thank god they're all in the back! Last night I was up nearly all night trying to make one of the teeth stop hurting....I was crying because it hurt so bad. But as soon as my benefits kick in I'm scheduling regular dentist appointments, monthly to start to fix the damage that has been done, all because my parents thought it was more important to gamble then take me to the dentist.

I am actually going through a similar issue. I need over 14 feelings...I think the number is closer to 17 and I have already had one route canal and need two crowns and had to have one tooth pulled...big bucks...not to mention once I'm straightened out, I'm going to have braces put on my teeth to help relieve crowding in the front. My insurance only covers up to $1000...I am now on my own until January. What I have my dentist doing is taking the teeth that are the worst and doing them first that way I don't end up with another route canal. I'm upset with my parents for not taking me to go as a child and then I'm angry at myself that once I turned 18, I didn't go on my own...here I am 24 and I have a ton of teeth issues. But I'm using it as a lesson...my kids will have regular dentist appointements and will be taught proper dental hygeine so that they can hopefully bypass some of the pain I've had to deal with and the money that I have put into my mouth.

I'm in the same boat as you guys...my mother took me to get my teeth cleaned a couple times, and I got a filling as a child, and I had braces for a looooooong time, but no proper hygiene was EVER taught. I'm angry about it, and even angrier that even though I'm having this many problems, she still isn't doing any better with my younger sisters. I'm 23 and have had braces for 10 years of my life (8 the first time and then 2 the next time because I lost my retainer and mom wouldn't buy another one). I've had two root canals and a filling in the last couple years (only because my grandma was nice enough to pay for it). When I had my wisdom teeth out they told me that I should have had them out years ago. In December I'm going to be on FH's insurance, so I'm trying to put off the additional seven filling I'll need until then, but the dentist already told me I'm risking a lot, because a few of my teeth are starting to decay. I've been telling my mother for years now that she needs to get my sisters to the dentist PRONTO because it's easier to fix these things when they're young, but she keeps saying she doesn't have time. UGH! Mothers!

Oh gosh girls!! I am so sorry! My parents always had me go to the dentist when I was supposed to. But i still had alot of cavities. And i ALWAYS brushed my teeth. One time I went and had 8 at once. My teeth are cavity prone. And my brother and my dad would NEVER go to the dentist and they would NEVER get cavities.....not fair!

You poor things. :( Please don't be insulted, but it makes me very angry at your parents! their children should be FIRST prority! I always had my teeth cleaned when i was younger (i don't have insureance right now..) but i'm lucky, the dentist said i have 'hard' teeth.. I also had braces... Ugh.. :(

I have to say my parents spent a bundle growing up on my teeth. I am the one that let them go to heck in a handbasket. I always spent the money on other things. So about 4 years ago (only because i kept an abcessed tooth all the time) i finally took out dental insurance. I had them cleaned and fixed from top to bottom. The sad part is: i only have 12 teeth left altogether. I had let them go for so many years I had to have several pulled, root canals done, and now have to wear a partial. Ladies never let your teeth go. i hate this partial. But however it does not hurt near as bad as a toothache does.

I feel your pain - the only difference is my parents took me to the dentist every six months - I got my first cavity when I was 20 and it went down hill from here - I ended up with gum disease which decayed all my top teeth - I'm 33 and was at the point that I wanted them all pulled but found a wonderful dentist who capped them and they look great and I'm pain free. Now, my poor daughter has a mouth full of capped teeth because her first set of teeth were coming in with cavities and her four front teeth were taken out when she was 2. She is now 7 and we are still waiting for them to come in. I have been taking her to the dentist since her first 4 teeth came in but the dentist told me that it only takes one bad gene.

My parents never want to take responsibility. Though, I brushed my teeth twice a day and flossed when they bought some it still left tarter and years of not getting a cleaning started the decaying process. I've had my teeth cleaned since being on my own....but before that I was 10 I think...........13 years ago!

The toothaches are bad...I use orajel, I use the hydrocodone from when my last tooth was pulled, motrin, you name it I take it (of course not all at the same time!) Last night was bad......but when it gets really bad i take half of a hydrocodone and it knocks me out...but when the insurance kicks in, to the dentist I go......I'll get as much done as I can for the year until next year. I've even sometimes have gotten to the point of having them all pulled to get full on dentures....no more dental problems...but I rethink that and I am going to try to avoid it, but honestly, I think it's going to happen. The last dentist appointment he said that all of them are decaying below the gumline, so who knows.

And Nekochanpurr I am not insulted by your comment...I'll be the first say that parents were horrible parents.......still are.

When the pain would get that bad for me, I would rinse with cold vodka - it doesn't last very long but it gives you some relief. Also try rinsing with peroxide and warm water or warm salt water after you eat.

I definitely try that, we have vodka in the freezer already cold! YAY! :)

Awe I'm sorry! thankfully my parents made me go every 6 months even though I'm sure I cried up a storm about it. Still to this day I have never had a cavity, even though I always had a lot of tarter build-up. I did have braces for about a year and a half too. BUT now that I am married, I don't have insurance and my 6 month mark is coming up... If I don't go it will be the first time since I have had teeth practically that I haven't went!

Sorry about the problems you girls have!! I understand your being upset!

Tooth pain is one of the worst types of pain, I think.
I just had a root canal done, first time ever a dentist had to drill. Except when they replaced my two front crowns, where I broke my teeth off. Man is it painful.
Hope you feel better soon.
