Hey guys, (this may have already been a topic before - sorry. And I haven't been around much, I have this stupid cold that won't go away!!), but I've been thinking about the whole tanning thing. I'm really conscious about skin cancer and everything (about four years ago, my stepmom had skin cancer. She would lay in the tanning bed for as long as she could and then lay outside for 2 to 3 hours every weekend, so I'm really nervous about that, even though you can see why she would get it.) I haven't decided if I want to just go with how I am now (not tan, but not too white either) or lay in the tanning bed. I live in a small town and there's only like two places that do the airbrush tan thing and I've seen people who have used both (NOT pretty!!) and I'm not gifted at the self tanner in a bottle. Is anyone else trying to decide whether to tan or not to tan?? Or opinions and thoughts about it??

Im thinking about tanning too. Right now I am pale, not too bad, but I dont like it. Im trying to check into all the options available around here and then I will make my decision.

I am very much against tanning, but that is just my opinion. If God wanted us all to look like George Hamilton he would have made up all George Hamilton. I have done the airbrush tanning thing. I didn't mind it. It was just really cold standing there while it dried. Shop around and try some other places outside of your town. I think the last time I was airbrushed, it cost me around $50. If you want to go the self tanner route, just buy a bottle and practice with it. Get your FH to help with the hard to reach spots. Lancome and Neutrogena both make a nice streak free self tanner. Just make sure to exfolitae VERY well first, dry dead skin will suck up color and you will look splotchy. And moisturize too so that the color blends and lays better. Go for the lightest color you can find too, you can always add an extra layer after a couple hours.

LMAO ... but I agree ;) Some of us are naturally darker than others and that is ok. Back in the day the fairer skin tones were thought of as more desirable ;)

Personally, I have skin cancer in my family and I am fairly pale myself. I used to lay out alot and I also used to lay in tanning beds but I never got very dark ... so with that and the skin cancer issue, I just gave up.

I have done the bottled stuff myself and if done right it looks good, but I have seen lots of people end up like an 'umpa lumpa' from Willa Wonka *LOL* Either way it is a pain IMO so I don't bother.

I have know people that have done the airbrush thing and had it look good but I have known others that have done it and look not so good.

So if you want to get a little darker for the wedding I would look into the airbrush tan or tan in a bottle. Both can look good if done right.

With either option go with the right shade for you ... Like Lacey said, go for the lightest shade, you can always add more but you can't take away ;)

Best wishes,

I have been thinking about tanning too. In the summer I spend a lot of time in the FIL's pool. So I will lay out in there for like 15 minutes and then just swim. I cfan get an ok color doing that. But I am a very pale person, so I'd like to have a little color for the wedding so I was thinking after the summer going maybe once a week in September. There is no where to get the spray on tan around here. I'd have to drive at least 45 minute and I can't see it being worth all that time!

I was wondering about tanning myself. I come from a scotish background so i'm very pale. You can see my veins on the backs on my hands and insides of my arms and legs.
I was thinking i would wait to see what my dress looked like on me when it came in before i made the final decision. When i ordered my dress it was september so i had alot of colour from being out and about all summer. When the dress comes in it will be early april so i will still be pasty white. If i look ok then i am not going to tan. But if i don't look quite right. Then i might do a bit of tanning but not alot. It's not really me to be really tanned.

For the pale ladies, I think Ivory shade dresses look best. But if you are set on a white dress and feel bad about being "pasty white" then go for the "Fake 'n' Bake" it is much safer ;)

I have an ivory dress with champagne trim but I still wouldn't mind a little bit of color. That's why I'm only going to tan a couple times. Plus I don't want to look pale by the pool on our honeymoon!

funny side bar note ... this girl I once worked with used to call me "Martha White" because I was so pale :bblol: I don't know why I just remembered that ;)

Let me just say that being fair complected isn't all that bad. Up until about 50-75 years ago it was preferable to my coloring. I was blessed in the fact that I got an olive coloring from my dad's family. (Mom is Swedish and Irish so she is like clear.) The good point of the olive skin tone is that I have never expereinced a really horrible sun burn and I am never pale. The downside I AM GREEN! If I start to let my tan go away I literally look like Kermit the Frog. I don't go to the tanning bed so all winter long I look like I have an upset stomach. In the summer I try to go for a walk or something every day outside just to get a hint of color so I look more golden and less reptilian! Be happy that you just turn white...oh and I only good is pastels what ashame I missed all the fashion of the Miami Vice era!

Much! I think by tomorrow or Friday it should be gone away completely! I've had it since last Wednesday night, so I'm ready to be completely well again. Plus our new semester starts Friday, and I have an 8 AM class. Thanks for checking ;)

I second the GL on the new semester...I miss that stuff, can you believe it?

Anyways, as far as the spray on tan goes, I did it once and my hands ended up REALLY splotchy...but the rest of me looked pretty good. I've seen the self-tanners that come with fans that you use to mist yourself with. I'm thinking I'm going to try that.

And as for your Kermit-ness Lacey, I think I'd rather be Kermit in the winter than the red tellatubby in the summer. I swear, I just show my face in the sun and I'm burnt to a crisp! I have to wear sunscreen all the time! Even if I'm just walking to my car! I'm the clear that your mother is. :) Although, I do get to wear the miami vice look...bet you're jealous! ;)

You sound like my best friend. She has the whole fair complexion, red hair thing going for her. In summer her left forearm is continually burnt from driving with it near the window. I feel so bad for her. I did get a burn in Key West this year but that is because I was in the direct sun on the beach for like 6 hours. I never appreciated what you "burnies" go through. That :censored: hurt like all heck! It would just be nice to be able to wear some neutral earthtones every now and then though.

I am fair skinned and I get burned if I am out in the sun too much. I wear lot of black and dark earth tone colors. Sometimes I will throw in some blue or pink or purple. I don't think I look good in white or red and I don't like orange or yellow ... I don't really care for pastel colors on me at all.

My friend has olive skin and dark brown hair ... she wears black and earth tone colors with no problems.

Black I can wear. I also can pull off white which is a rare talent. But anything with even a hint of green makes me look horrible.

I don't do green much either...the red and green together reminds me too much of Christmas...:bbmrgreen:

Seriously though, I was terrified that a white dress was going to totally bleach me out in all the pics. So, much to my FH's dismay, I'm wearing ivory...it's a light ivory though :)

Actually if you look at it this way dark tonrs on a fsir skinned person can sometimes make them look paler...Pastels can bring vibrance to fair skin..Like candy pink, royal blue, burgany (not bright red),rust colos can be beautiful...Trust me i am very pale.....

I do ike royal blue, burgundy and rust colors sometimes. I like pink ok, but I prefer a darker pink. I am not much for pastels, (although I do have a baby blue hoodie my sister gave me) not so much because I am afraid they might 'wash me out' or anything, it is just that I don't like them ;)
