I remember some of us had talked about starting a Diet and Exercise support thread so lets start here ...

I found this info on eDiets.com and I thought I would share ...

5 Essentials of Losing Weight

Strategy #1: Awareness is the key to catching the extra calories you eat and drink each day before they show up on the scale. Are you dining at the drive-thru, slurping sugary sodas or cleaning your kids' plates? It's time to take a look at your actions and make smarter choices that won't take your thighs by surprise

Strategy #2: Education helps you know what's healthy and what's headed straight to your hips. Take the time to read labels and choose real foods instead of processed pretenders. Once you know about healthy eating, you can find delicious foods that will leave you slim and satisfied.

Strategy #3: Determination is the desire to make a long-term change, rather than relying on a quick-fix fad. You must be ready to makeover your life...before you can makeover your look. Once you're fed up enough to get fired up, then nothing can stand in your way.

Strategy #4: Action is the moment you make the changes that will make a difference. Be sure to take action every day...whether it's choosing a salad instead of a sundae, taking the stairs instead of the elevator or relaxing with a good book instead of a gooey candy bar.

Strategy #5: Motivation means staying strong even when life and lasagna get in the way. Prepare for those tough times by planning rewards to keep you going. Buy a new outfit when you drop 10 pounds or take a cruise when you lose 20. Think of them as well-deserved splurges that won't leave you feeling guilty.
--------------------------------------------------

I am trying to stick to the low sodium diet and cook more that way I will eat more healthy things more often. I also want and need to start working out again ... I am not trying to be some size 4 or even an 8 anymore ... I just want to loose like 30 lbs and then maintain that.

I was talking with a friend of mine and she and I are going to start walking at the local park twice a week ... I want to get back into playing tennis too but I don't have a partner anymore :( I do have an elliptical machine and free weights here at home so I can do that too.

Ok, so I need to get to it ;)

WebLady, it's to bad we don't live closer. I love to play tennis, but I can't find a partner either. I played in high school and miss playing! My FH played against me once and then decided he didn't want to ever again because he got tired of chasing the ball. lol
I want to start walking again, I use to walk 1-2 miles 3 or 4 days a week. But I'm not much for being outside in the winter so that doesn't get done now. I'd like to get a tred mill or something like that so I can walk at home when it's cold or raining. I'm only looking to loose 10 pounds but I'd like to tone my legs. I don't light my thighs so I'm trying to find things that will help trim them a bit.

I have been looking into joining a gym. I have never gone to one before. I think it may be fun plus I'd love to be able to swin again and use the hottubs! :D The only problem is that the gym is 45 min away but that is the closest of all the gyms around here. If the have 6 month memberships I will most likely join. When I go back to work thiss spring I know I won't have any time to go.

In the meantime I am just watching what I eat better. My FH can eat anything he wants. So I am not joining him in his late night snacking. It has been helping so far. I have only lost 4 pounds though. But every little bit helps!:D I am determined to lose it without going on the dreaded low carb diet again!

My fiance and I are going to join a gym together....I really hate the idea of people watching me work out but I'm gonna suck it up...I guess I'll have to if I want actually have some short of shape other than round!!!! haha No but really it seems whenever I gain weight it all goet gained right in the middle. I go through spurts of sadness when it comes to my weight. Some days I feel great, others I just wish I could acquire a tapeworm. j/k...ok well maybe if I could just have it for a week or two, lose some weight, and get rid of it when I want.

Actually.. U dont have to go the gym...What can do is an at home program..It takes just as mich dicipline as going to the gym....With the exception of your feeling uncomfortable....I go through the exact same feelings..Thtas the reason I do Pilates at home..Im 135 and feel fat as a cow..Everybody is staring at me thinkin OMG shes so fat...Believe me i know exactly how u feel..U dont have to go..Just relax at home with an at home program..It works just as well..Plus it'll work better if you are relaxed..Stress hinders the weight loss process...relax, Breath, and the weight will fall off..Just dont stress yourself out over it..You'll be ok..

Wow, I missed a lot on this thread ... I forgot to 'subscribe' *opps*

Yeah, too bad we don't live near by ... But I am not really that good at tennis but I like it and I would like to get better. (My back hand really sucks OMG, you'd laugh, most people do)

I have a friend that said she'd start walking with me but she is older and has a bad knee so she doesn't want to play tennis though

I really want to get something started, but between working, and kids, and Brian, and wedding plans, and moving, and setting up the new house......well you get the picture. I havent gotten myself in gear to make time.

Yeah, that seems to be my problem ... I always feel like I have something else I 'should' be doing. I gotta get motivated to take better care of myself.

I have been looking into joining a gym. I have never gone to one before. I think it may be fun plus I'd love to be able to swin again and use the hottubs! You don't really have to join a gym to work out, there is lots you can do at home. But I miss the gym because I miss racquetball and the pool is always nice too :)

I did the low carb thing a while back and I lost a good bit of weight but it made me sick like everyday.

So I am just trying to eat better and cut back on the salt/sodium (because of my "elevated" blood pressure)

My fiance and I are going to join a gym together....I really hate the idea of people watching me work out but I'm gonna suck it up...I guess I'll have to if I want actually have some short of shape other than round!!!! haha No but really it seems whenever I gain weight it all goet gained right in the middle. LOL ... I hate it when I feel like people are watching me too! When I use to go to the gym I would just tune everyone out and put on my headset. When I am at home, sometimes I feel weird if my DH is in the other room, like I am afraid he will come in and see me and laugh or something  LOL ... I need help ;)

Sometimes I wish I had a tapeworm too *wink* I keep wanting to take some diet pills too but I know they are bad for you and don't work long term anyway.

I know my best friend wanted to lose wieght for her wedding...She did this online diet and exercise program.....She lost tons of wieght in a matter of 7wks!!!!!!!!! I am not a fan of quickie diets ... but if you only want to loose like 10 lbs for some event then I guess it ok :) I hear that the 'safe' and most effective weight loss is proper diet and exersise and that most people can't (and shouldn't) loose more than 10 lbs a month.

I am the same why, I hate to work out in front of people. I have a tape that I do every now and then, but I will never do it in front of FH. I did once and he started laughing and joking. All in fun of course, but now I feel ridiculous working out so I prefer to do it alone in my own living room!

My honey has never laughed at me, he tells me "fear" is silly but I still don't like it.

Once at the gym some guys laughed at me and a couple of my friends in a step class and we weren't following very well so I guess that is were my "fear" comes from.

I just feel silly I guess.

My school has an awsome fitness Centre, and its only $25 a semester (4 months) So its a great deal! I was really happy today when i found out that there are a ton of fitness classes happening. Including Yoga on Thursday afternoons HORRAY! So... hopefully i will be able to to motivate myself into going lots. I'd really be happy if i went enough that if i didn't go i didn't feel quite right. Plus there is an indoor running track so i can walk even when there is 4'-0" of snow outside.
The only thing i don't really care about there is that there are paramedic and firefighter programs so there are alot of really fit people there working out because its manditory for their program. Although.... the guys are very cute :) It makes me feel bad that i'm not that thin or toned and probaly never will be. I really should go in the mornings when all the college students are still sleeping :)

... It makes me feel bad that i'm not that thin or toned and probaly never will be

I too feel this way sometimes ... I think this is a problem. We all have to realize that we are all beautiful in our own way. Just because we are not a size 6 with 'D' boobs that doesn't mean we are not beautiful! Not everyone is gonna be the "ideal" woman (and whos ideal is this anyway!?) but that is OK. We shouldn't be obsessed with a particular body type.

Some of us are not meant to be supper thin and again, that is OK! I think we should just go after being in better health and being in the best shape each of us can be. Try to be healty and be active and don't sit around all day. (this is a problem for me since I work at home, I tend to sit in front of the computer all day) But don't to be obsessed with numbers on the scale and/or trying to look like some model or some "ideal" body type ... I am sick of all that noise!

I am not trying to impress anyone! Not even my husband ... Yes, I want him to be proud of me and yes it would be nice if I could get back to where I was when we first met, but people change as they get older (especially women) and I have accepted that I may never be there again ... he isn't the same either and I still love him just the same. So I am just trying to be healthier and be in decent shape ... if that means that I am "stuck" being a 10 or a 12 with my barely B's then that is fine with me as long as I can be healthy ... and if someone doesn't like me because I am not "Perfect" then :censored: them!

Ok, sorry I got a little carried away there

Ok, 1...I LOVE THIS THREAD! Hearing everyone voice the SAME exact insecurities that I have makes me feel not so insecure about them.

2...I have to second the quick diets thing. I didn't do a quick diet but I learned the hard way that if you loose more than ten pounds a month it doesn't look like you've gotten anywhere. I dropped weight at an unhealthy pace a few years ago and I ended up with a LOT of extra skin and a LOT of wrinkles (I call them inside-out stretch marks). I don't like them, but nothing short of surgery will ever totally get rid of it.

3...Let's do it guys! We can have some online fitness guru right here...ok, so maybe if you combined all of us, we're one fitness guru. But if we keep each other in check we'll have the support of people we trust and care about and we'll be able to do this. Besides, it's entirely wedding related...who doesn't want to loose at least a few pounds for their wedding?

So, who's with me? We can research what would be easy for us to do even though we all work ungodly hours and we're all planning weddings and raising kids and all of the million other things we do...I'm psyched!

Ok Sean and I joined a gym last year and did really well. I think I lost something 15 pounds in a month which really dind't take as much effort, I just ate a little less and did 60 minutes at the gym every morning. Then I started back to work in the fall and it all went down the crapped. There was no way I was getting up at 430 to go to the gym and when I got home from work I was too exhausted to even think about a stair climber or treadmill. Then the place where we are having our reception is an athletic/social club (whatever that means). They have the best gym in the area and I have been there a whooping one time! I really need to get this butt in gear.

As for being insecure at the gym, when I was working out I never took the time to look at the people next to me. I was too busy watching the television or listening to the horrible heavy metal radio statin that was always playing. Aside from that I get some sick joy knowing that I haunt the super thin well toned person's nightmare. They know that they are just one bag of Fritos away from being round little ***! Hahahahahaha!

OMG, you are just too funny ;)

Ya know what I hate ... all those diet commercials "I lost 100 lbs in 3 days!" LOL, OK I am exaggerating ... but it is funny how they say that you can loose all this weight in such a short amount of time if you take this pill or drink this drink or something. The the old "Results Not Typical" is in small print at the bottom of the screen. Not to mention the side effects of these type things!

Arggg. Anyway, I need to get all the holiday cookies out of the house! I ate 4 cookies today

I worked out yesterday, for the 1st time in like a year! (Man am I out of shape) But I had a busy day today and I didn't get around to it and now (9:45pm) I just can't get motivated to do anything.

I really do gotta get motivated. I really don't to set a goal for myself and not meet it (again) I don't want another year to go by and I haven't done anything but make excuses for my "issue"

Money has just been too tight for me to join a gym. I joined the city nat (which is basically a gym) for a month, but couldn't afford it after that. I'm hoping to squeeze it out of the budget now though. My FH was reading over my shoulder last night and asked about it, so I think he would like me to get back into it if I want to. He doesn't think I need to loose weight, but he knows I want to. That and he hates it when I call myself fat, so I'm sure if he could get rid of that...:)

I have been emailing a lady at the gym I was talking about and she finally gave me a price. One year membership is $712!!:bbeek: Now that seems a bit much to me. I think I will just stick to my videos and equipment I have here.

I have been doing Denise Austins shortcut videos lately and I have noticed the difference. Now these videos don't get my heart rate up at all they just focus on different parts, no cardio. I have the legs and buns, arms and shoulders and the abs videos. She rushes through things too much. I think it is more meant to show you the right exercises to do so I pause the tape and set a timer for 2 minutes and do that one exercise then go on to the next one and pause. I need to work on my arms the most and I definetly feel the burn when I am done. I have always used 5lb weights but tried 3lb and I felt it even more so I am going to stick with the 3lb and work up to the 5lb. I have a stepper too but 10 minutes seems like an eternity to me on that thing. I just hate getting on it!

Well I think I put on a few pounds over the holidays and AM NOT HAPPY ABOUT IT!!!!! I want (and need) to do something.
Brian doesnt get it. He says Im beautiful/gorgeous/perfect just the way I am. I look in the mirror and and Im like "ewwwwww". I really just want to firm up. Im bloated because of just finishing up my "monthly". In a couple of days I will be pretty much back to normal, but dang it feels like it lasts forever.
Im usually real good about eating healthy, but "during" I just want junk.....and LOTS of it.

I try to eat healthy, really I do! I have celery and lot fat veggie dip, low fat yogert, oranges, and some other healthy stuff in my kitchen. I hardly ever eat it! I will take it with me to work, and end up eating something else that someone brings in to share. I'll say, this is what I will have for a snack when I'm hungry later today. Then FH sits next to me with a bowl of ice cream that is just calling my name. He can eat whatever he wants and not worry about gaining a pound! I use to be like that. But then, like the rest of my family, I reached my 20s and my matabolizon slowed and now I gain with everything I eat. But I have such a hard time giving up/cutting back on the food I got use to eating!

So I am just trying to get motivated to cut back a little and work out alot more. But that is hard too since I haven't been in the habit of doing that for nearly 2 years.

You all are talking about healthy food and snacking. My problem is just the opposite. I don't eat all day. I don't have the time. I usually just have a bottle of water on my desk that I sip on because I talk so much. Then when I walk in the front door it is like hunting for food. By that time I am so hungry that I don't care what I find as long as it gets in my belly fast. Then Sean always ends up staying at the office until 6 or 7 so we don't eat dinner until at least 7 or 8. Then I sit on the couch and watch television or read!

You top that off with my birth control pills and you have a real mess. When I started the pill I was 150#'s and a large B/small C cup. 6 months on the pill and I was at 180 #'s and filling a D cup. Oh yeah and I threw up or at least felt like it every day for the first 6 weeks on the **** thing too.

Starting tomorrow with my weekly grocery trip, this is going to change. (Except the bc part, I am no where near ready for that in my life.)

I'm the same way at work Lacey. I don't eat all day because I need my lunch hour to make my break between jobs long enough to keep me sane. So I'm STARVING by the time I pull in for dinner or hit some fast food restaurant. I don't live a life that allows me to eat healthy right now. I keep telling myself: get the salad, get the baked potato...but when you haven't eaten anything all day a salad and baked potato are just not going to do it. I'm going to be awful when I actually have to diet.

On a side note...I wish my bc affected my mosquito bumps...I barely fill an A cup...and I mean BARELY!

Eating healthy on a tight budget is hard, especially in the winter when the price of fresh good stuff is through the roof. What I always did was either by the non ready stuff. (Real carrots that needed peeled instead of the little baby ones, the head of broccoli instead of the little bag of broccoli bites, ect) Also, I skipped on the organics. I love to buy them now and hopefully the pesticides have been flushed from my body but sometimes a girl's gotta get some pesticides to save a couple bucks. If you like chicken, a lot of bigger stores have boneless skinless chicken thighs that are just a couple calories more than the breasts but way less. If you like fish, you can get some stuff that is a couple days older than in the case if you look in the freezer section. Also, stay in season. Strawberries are great in June when they are $2.99 a basket but they suck in December when they are $5.99 a basket. When the weather starts to break (usually April) see if you area has a farmers market. We have one once a week up the street and I just go and buy whatever looks fresh and good to use that week. I did the math and I save between $15-20 doing that as opposed to making a list and going to the grocery store where you have to pay the farmer, store, and the middle men.(Bonus if you are a regular the farmers will get to know you and squirrel away some nice little surprises for you too.)

As much as it pains me to say it, the cheapest place for healthy fruits and veggies and lean meats is Wal Mart. You don't get great service or a wide variety of har dto find stuff but for the basics the prices can't be beat.

I totally understand the baked potato/salad thing too. I used to stop at Wendy's alot when I would be out running errands this summer. I always did great with my selections too: garden salads, fruite cups, potatoes with just a little sour cream, bottled water, ect. Then I was still hungry and would get the **** Frosty too!

I used to eat nothing all day too. I did it because I wanted to lose weight....yeah I know it was stupid and this was a long time ago. But I have since learned that you lose more weight by eating 3 meals or 5 small meals a day. You should try those slim fast shakes(I know what you mean by not having any time) You could mix it up in the morning and take it to work with you. It is suppose to be the equivalent of a meal. Even if you take a granola bar or something it will be better than eating nothing.

I've been trying out those slim fast shakes. I started taking them to work along with some fruit. I found this week that I'm less likely to be snacking all day already.

At the grocery store today I bought some little baby carrots and some ready to use fruits and veggies so I can just keep those in the lounger and grab a handful between classes. I also got some butter free microwave popcorn to munch on too. We will see how I do on that. The cafeteria at work stays open all day and the kids have 10 minutes between classes so they are always in there buying bagels, pop tarts, muffins, ect. I just wish they had the good stuff out all day for me. By the way I call the kids little rats because like rodents I don't think they could go very long without eating before they died.

Does anyone know what they sweeten those diet shakes with? I know I looked at the yogurt smoothies at the grocery store but the ones that didn't have a billion calories were all sweetened with artificial stuff or that Splenda. I can't handle either of those without getting very sick.

I would say you'd have to read the labels to be sure about the sweeteners but most diet colas and diet drinks have aspartame which is like 'Sweet and Low" From what I have heard Splenda is suppose to be the better of the artificial sweeteners. But they all have something like it if it isn't sugar.

I have a hard time with most sugar substitutes but Splenda doesn't bother me as much.

OK I got this e-mailed to me and though tit was kinda funny so thought I would share it with all of you.

'Twas the month after Christmas and all through the house
Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse.
The stuffing I'd nibbled, the turkey I'd taste
The yummies I'd eaten gone straight to my waist.
The wine and the mince pies,
The bread and the cheese
I should have just said, "No thank you, please."
So as I dressed myself in my boyfriend's old shirt,
I couldn't believe my bottom and belly- the girth!
I said to myself, as only I can,
"You can't spend the year disguised as a man!"
So away with the last of the sour-cream dip,
Get rid of the fruitcake, every cracker and chip.
Every last bit of food that I like must be banished
'Til all the additional ounces have vanished.
I won't have a cookie, not even a lick.
Instead I'll chew on a long celery stick.
I won't have Irish coffees, or chocolates, or pie,
I'll munch on a carrot and quietly I'll cry:
"I'm hungry, I'm lonesome, and life is a bore-
But isn't that what January's for?"
Unable to giggle, no longer a riot,
Happy New Year to all and to all a good diet!

MAN! I hate not being able to post rep because I have to spread it around!

Anyways,

1. I gotta find out what BC y'all are on! ****! Yes, it would be great if we could just shift fat. A little from here a little from there and I'd be Barbie...only able to walk without falling on my face! :bbmrgreen:

2. I can't have artificial sweetners either, with the exception of Splenda (which I just don't like). The other ones all have phenalkeneuretics (?) in them which has been linked to causing seizures in people who have epilepsy. My g-ma had epilepsy and it bi-generational and my sister has it, so I'd rather not increase my chances.

3. Have you ever tried the slim fast soy shakes? Oh those are so gross they make me gag just thinking about them. Plus, and I'm sure you don't all want to hear this, but part of the reason Slim Fast works so well is because it has a laxative in it. So, even when you're not lactose intolerant like me, those shakes cause a few more trips to the bathroom a week (nothing major, but it's something to think about).

4 (and last, I think). I LOVED THE POEM! Man! That was great!

Ok, I think I covered all the stuff I wanted to put rep for...

Good, I'm not the only person in America who doesn't like Splenda. It is the only artificial sweetner that doesn't give me a headache. But I'll just take the few extra sugar calories.

The after taste kills me! My mom and I grabbed free samples of that new 7up :censored: when it first came out (sweetened with splenda). A little cup walking out of Target...the taste wraps back around and slams us in the face so that we have cough syrup taste in our mouth the rest of the day. Oh it was terrible. Bleck!

I bought a pack of that once too because I like fruity stuff and thought that if I had to have a soft drink that at least I was getting something decent. I didn't know that there was Spelnda in it. Sean and I opened one can to taste. There are 11 more in the fridge downstairs. By the way I bought ti over the summer. I can't even pawn it off on people. Little kids won't even drink when they come over.

Of course they won't...it's yucky. And the commercials for it are so ridiculous. I mean, I've heard some ridiculous commercials in my time, but I think these are near the top.
