Ok so do any of you ladies (and/or your families) have the traditional collard or turnip greens and black eyed peas for dinner on New Years Day?
I don't care for that stuff and never really knew it was some kind of tradition until today. Looking back I think I remember a few times my mom made that and my MIL used to make it too but I never ate it *yuk*
So a friend of mine was telling me that the greens are suppose to bring money in the new year and the peas are to bring good luck.
Here is more info this kind of thing - http://www.lewrockwell.com/edmonds/edmonds239.html
I think it is kind of silly but whatever man ;) I don't eat that stuff and I am not a superstitious person.
Anyway, Happy New Year to all!

I've never eaten it, but I can tell you that since I've been able to chew, I've had herring at midnight every New Year's Eve. It's gross, but it's a Polish tradition. It's supposed to keep you from going hungry in the new year. The one year my grandfather didn't have herring as the first thing he ate in the new year was when he was in a German POW Camp; I'm sure y'all can guess how much he ate that year. So it kind of sunk in and I've always done it. Jason joined in last year, but took a pass on it this year. He's not such a fan...lol.

Around here it is pork and saurkraut cooked in beer which is a German thing. But I have heard of the black eyed peas from friends in the south. Personally I'll skip both and just stick with the champagne and kiss.

... just stick with the champagne and kiss.
That is what I am talking about ;)
Tonight we had an early dinner with some friends ... we had rotiserie turkey, mashed potatos and gravey, mac 'n' cheese, green beans (they couldn't find the collards at the store ... not like I would have eaten them anyway ;)) black eyed peas,(didn't eat those either) and rolls. Then of course there was cake
*hehe* now I am hungry again and I want some pizza ;)

We had chinese! No better way to ring in the new year eh? LOL. I've heard of all of these traditions from various people. My uncle's mother (he's married into the family) is from Germany and we spent New Year's Day at her house one year...I haven't eaten saurkraut since (except on ruebens). That was an interesting meal.

OK I don't eat anything special. And never really had a tradition. But this year my FH did something even my six year old looked at him funny and asked me what he was doing. I almost died laughing. Since he can remmeber his mother has always hung a piece of cabbage some where in the house. It is suppose to make sure you wont go without a little bit of money in your pocket. I said ok what ever you want to do but you should have seen the look on my daughters face. He told me to explain it to her but I was laughing to hard. Not at him but the face she made and they way she asked "What is he doing?". The cats where going crazy. Their noses were just a twitching trying to find out what the smell was.

That's hilarious! I haven't heard of that one...but it sounds unique. When I first moved in with my college roommate (who's now my best friend and is my MoH) she wall-boogered a quarter to the wall. She said, that way, she'd never be broke. Since then, I've always had a quarter taped to the wall somewhere. :)

I would have been LMAO ... I probably would have said "It's ok honey, Nicholas has just lost his mind" *hehe* I have heard of eating cabbage for that reason but never hanging it in the house ... OMG, I can just imagine the smell! *LOL*

OMG ... I am dieing over here LMAO.
So my friend told me a new one last night ... You are not suppose to wash clothes on New Year's day. (opps) The thing is that you will 'wash' your friends away  Apparently you are not suppose to do ANY work on New Year's day or you will be working all year. Well, I hope I am working all year ;) *hehe*
I just think it is all too funny ... I don't believe in any of that and I don't practice any of it.
I don't freak out at the black cat or the broken minor stuff either ;)

Well I did my laundry New Years Eve day, so that was lucky. I didn't do anything yesterday. I was suppose to work but I was home sick...sigh. SO I guess I lucked out with those too. I don't really believe in any of that though.
My dad grew up with one that you are suppose to keep your wallet between the storm door and the main door of your house over night New Years Eve and you will always have money coming in.
And lets see, for dinner my mom always made pork chops with saurkraut and cream of chedder soup mix together and baked over the pork chops. That was actually pretty good. Of course I had pizza this year! :bblol:

New Years Eve, my dad came in for "Christmas" so I cooked the traditional dinner. Turkey, ham, dressing, gravy, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and rolls. Last night we cooked hamburgers on the grill.

lol...well, Jason just wanted to stay home on New Year's Day and considering we don't have a washer and dryer at home (unless I do it in the bath tub) there was definitely no clothes washing.
As far as superstitions go, I think I have the best one:
I HAVE to touch a knot when I'm going over a railroad track (knot=screw head or something of the like). I used to believe it was for good luck. My sister stopped doing it and said she had better luck so I stopped doing it too. In that same week, my mother backed into a car pulling out of a driveway AND put a hole in her oil pan going over a pothole. Well, that was convincing enough for me.
When we were kids we used to hold our breaths next to cemetaries. We figured if the dead people couldn't breathe, neither should we. We would sit a red light turning blue because we were on the side of the intersection with the cemetary on it. That was pretty stupid...lol.

LOL ... When I was little my sister and I used to hold our breath as we went under a tunnel or over a bridge, I can't remember why.
It's all silliness to me ... personally, I think alot of this kind of thing is in your head ... if you think that bad things will happen to you then you will look for them to, ya know ;)

As a child my sister and I would hold our breath going over a brindge and when we past a cemetary we held it till we sawa a white house. Not sure why lol. And when we saw a car with one headlight we had to kiss our hand and touch the ceiling of the car and make a wish. What were we thinking? lol

We did that when we were going under yellow lights. If you got seven in a row you were supposed to get laid that night. It was also supposed to keep the cops from stopping you since that's sort of illegal. :) We were weird.
