View Full Version : Reception Food
I'm trying to do a little brainstorming to get some ideas of what to have at our reception. We will be having a short reception with a mini buffet. Our package comes with a fruit tray, chicken salad croissants, and pasta salad. I'm not sure how much freedom we have to alter the menu, but they said that we could make changes. I just want to have a list of ideas when we meet with them. We'll be having a chocolate fountain as well as wedding cake so I'm thinking of requesting only savory dishes. The pasta salad is supposed to be very popular. However, since there will be little seating I thought that having to use a fork to eat might not be such a good idea, but I don't know. Remember, it's a Victorian afternoon tea reception!

I don't know how much of this could fit into your Victorian thing, but I'll tell you what we're having at our reception. :grinhappy:
Teriyaki chicken stickers
cream cheese-filled mushrooms
stuffed jalepenos
mini quiche
crab/salmon tortilla wheels
olive bread (recipe here (http://www.thepioneerwomancooks.com/the_pioneer_woman_cooks/2007/06/sdkfsldkfjsdlfk.html))
fruit/veggies/crackers
mini cheesecakes
And of course we're having a big salsa/pico/guacamole/sr cream bar....but that's certainly not very Victorian. :winktongue:
Thanks hun! Actually several of those are very good ideas for me! :D

What about Tea sandwiches? And maybe some savory filled puff pastry? Those are easy for people to eat, and the tea sandwiches go with your theme, which I actually love by the way! Hmm...I'll try to think of more for you - I used to be a caterer, so I've got some good ideas up my sleeves...

Thanks for the ideas guys. I'm really hoping that they'll give us a lot of options. The setup at your wedding looked so nice Elizabeth. I love those punch bowls.
I have seen those little tea cup favors before! They are sooo pretty. We're having over 200 guests so we've decided to make our favors though.

LOL They are just giant plastic dollar store bowls & dollar store ladles. We tried to find "cheap and cheerful" glass punch bowls but found out very quickly that there was no such thing.
The platters are dollar store finds too. We donated all to our church.
Here is a pic of petit fours which are very English tea like :)
Typically, petits fours are approximately 1 inch square and about 1.5 to 2 inches high and consist of layers of cake and butter cream frosting. All of this is covered with fondant, often pastel in color.

I can't believe that those were from the dollar store. How funny. They looked great! Those petit fours are so pretty. When Chad and I were catering we made hundreds upon hundreds of those suckers, but they weren't that pretty. I had thought about doing a few stacked cake platters of those instead of a wedding cake, but I still don't know.

We had our cake, and a chocolate fountain but when I saw them I just had to have some. They weren't cheap (abotu $1.30 each if I remember correctly) but they were so cute (& delicious too).
In hindsight, I probably could have bought more and just did away with the cake (hardly anyone ate it!) but I can understand you probably not wanting to see another one, if you have made them before. I would imagine that they are pretty finicky and time consuming.
Yes they take forever to layer with jam, pour the icing two times, and then decorate. They are worth it though because they are just delightful little bites.
