Ok, y'all I have a question for you. ooo...I'm going to use a poll...not as fun as some of the other polls, but still pollable. Anyways...
My mother is terrified someone is going to open the box that I've planned to use to hold cards we receive from people. She thinks that we should figure out a way to lock the box so people can't pull the lid off very easily.
Do you think it's necessary to lock the box that your guests will be placing their cards in?
Any thoughts...

Either you guys live in a really rough town or your mother is PARANOID. Lock the box? What the heck? I can't imagine this to be something to be worried about, but I guess it depends on a lot of different factors.

See...that's the thing, we don't live in a really tough town. One of her coworkers said that she locked hers and my mama is worried that if we don't lock ours, someones going to make off with the cards. Here's my issue: that's my family and friends and while we're in a public park and people could walk in, I think someone would notice them before they make off with the card box...I dunno, maybe I'm naive...

I have seen lots of weddings use some sort of lock box for cards and such. I guess if you expect people to put money and checks and such in the cards then it is always safer to lock the box.
I have seen all kinds of things get stolen at weddings so I guess IMO it is better to be safe ... but you can't be too paranoid and let it ruin your day.

Maybe you don't necessarily need to lock the box, but shortly after everyone has arrived some one could take the box and put it in the trunk of a car for safe keeping. Our "card box" was not lockable but since we were in a busy hotel right before dinner my MIL spirited it away into her hotel room for safer keeping. I mean even though you've got a lock on a box, doesn't mean someone can't scoop it and open it later! And just for safety and being that you will be in a public park, maybe your best bet is to have someone watch it, then put it somewhere for safe keeping after all your guests have put their cards and such into it!! Just my two cents!

I agree with Canadianwife. Even though I voted no after I read her response it made alot of sense. Especially if you will be in a public place. You never know. I wonder though if you did put a lock on the box if there is a way to put the lock so it is not noticable. Maybe incorperate it into the decoration so it is covered up. I think if I was at a wedding and saw that the box was locked I would think it was odd. Like the bride and groom were so concerned about getting money that they locked it up. kwim?

What we plan on doing with our box is just take a cardboard box and wrap it in white paper and then decorate it with leaf stamps. Then just cut a slot in the top for the cards. That way no one can reach in unless they unwrap the box!

That's what I thought about doing to Nikki. But my cousin had a nice keepsake box for hers and keeps ALL of her wedding cards in it. My mother picked up this GREAT box from work! It's round and very sturdy! It has a moose on it...hehe...that's going to get covered up though. I thought about wrapping a HUGE amount of ribbon around it and cutting the hole for the cards where the ribbon doesn't hinder it. That way, someone would have to undo the whole bow and that would be very noticeable. I'm not sure yet though. That's in my plans tomorrow...maybe.
Thanks to all of you for your suggestions!

My idea would be to have a box that you open fron the bottom. It has a slit on top to drop the cards in but to open and get them out you would have to pick it up and turn it over. We have a box like this at church. It sits on little legs, and has a lid on the bottom that DOES lock but no one can see it. The only reason I know this is because I emptied it for the church secretary one night. AND it is a very beautiful wooden box. The church has even allowed it to be used when a wedding is preformed there.
If you already have your box though, this wouldnt work for you.

I like your idea Cindy. Maybe I'll flip the box I have over. I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do for my card box yet actually. I think I mentioned the round box my mama grabbed me from work and I thought that I could cut a slit in the top and then tie a very big bow around it, so you'd have to untie the bow to get the box open...does that make sense? I did see one where there was no lid, the top was criss-crossed with ribbons that guests slid their cards in between...maybe I'll do that and then I won't deface the top of my box and I can use it to hold the cards after the wedding...I dunno, I'm still thinking...this is hard stuff!
