She came right out and asked for her tip?!?! I probably would have only left a couple dollars because of her attitude!

I have waited tables before and while I sometimes felt like asking if I was gonna get tipped, I would never actually do it! Once I did make up these little cards that read "Servers make $2.13 per hour; 15-20% tips are greatly appreciated" and I would put them in with the bill though ;) Got in trouble for it though

As for the "not the law" comment; while this is true, servers don't make minimum wage so it is expected that they be tipped. But that does not excuse this server's attitude!

Right.... BUT to ask for it?!?!?! It is not like she was being ripped off or anything! The amount servers get paid is place to place if not state to state!

Chad used to be a waiter at PF Chang's. One night he was really busy and he forgot to give a table their fortune cookies. Now PF Chang's is not cheap...the bill for the table was about $200. A few minutes later when he remembered the cookies, he went to the table and they had already left. There was exactly $200 on the table and on the receipt was written, "No cookie - no tip!". Hahaha.

Anyways, I can't believe that she had the nerve to ask for the tip like that. You just don't do that! Maybe she was having a bad day.

Hah, you're more generous than I am. I wouldv'e told her "You want a tip? Don't eat yellow snow." :irked:

Agreed, but tip is not something you're entitled to, it's something you earn, as a result of great service. I'm a HUGE tipper for great and evern average good service. But if you've got a 'tude and it's apparent you hate your job, and more specifically your customers? Nope, sorry... you'll get a comment on the check and minimal (or sometimes -- though rarely -- NONE) tip. It seems more and more (as evidenced by the waitress in this story) there's a sense of entitlement about the whole tip thing.

When I first got engraged; I waitressed at IHOP. I had the late shift; and one day someone didn't come in, so they split the tables between me and this other person. Only they didn't telll me and so when I did find out I had a few customers that were less than happy. I had 12 tables that night and needless to say only 3 of them left tips. I always tried to be friendly and stuff; I never took home much in tips, but I do know that there were some of the waiters that were taking home quite a bit. On that day I had one table leave me two cents and a note on the napkin that said we are waitress and your service sucked. If you are going to make it in this you need to be quicker and friendlyier than you are. Waitresses like the one you got, make it harder for the other waitresses or waiters out there that are nice and try to do a good job. People should not be rude, but I also try and give someone the benifit of doubt; she could have had a bad day. Or she could have been like this one guy that we all disliked who would steal other peoples tips. I know I used to catch him all the time. He felt like any money left on the tables when he walked by was fair game. IHOP had this rule where if you know it's someones tip and they need the table you were supposed to find the person and give them the tip. I lasted 6 months, would have kept working there if they hadn't messed up the working times. They had me working on my wedding day and when I pointed out I had requested of they told me that they would give me that day off but I needed to work the next day. I told them there was no way we were going to be gone on our honey moon and they said you either quit right now or show up. So I quit! as there was no way I could come into work, I wasn't even going to be in town. I have a friend that works at applebee's and loves it. It all depends on the staff, IHOP was nice while it lasted but the manager was a real JERK, which didn't make things fun all the time.

Years ago we had family visiting from Scotland so we brought them to Old Montreal. We sat on an outside terrace to have a few drinks. When the drinks came, my scottish cousin picked up the tab but the waitress wouldn't leave the table. Turns out that he didn't tip her (no, it isn't customary to tip in Scotland) and she wasn't about to leave without a tip! He was mortified.

I thought that was pretty nervy (especially for just a round of drinks) but your waitress takes the cake. Most people leave the tip on the table after all and you had gone back to sit down.

Me? I probably would have got up and left without giving her anything or perhaps asked her to get the manager.

I've never worked as a waitress but I could never imagine asking someone for a tip. I agree that was rude.
I think if a waitress did ask me I would have left her less of a tip because of her attitude. Usually, though as long as the service doesn't stink then she gets a good tip. If I see they are crazy busy too I usually leave a little nicer of a tip because I can sit there and see how hard she's working her butt off!

When it comes to tipping I'm fairly generous, however..Once I was out to eat on a date. Our waitress was this very pretty girl (and she knew it) and she was overly flirtatious and totally ignored me. I had to ask her for another beer 3 times and she gave my date 2 beers in the meanwhile of me still asking for my second. She even leaned across him to grab him the desert menu and lets just say it was done pretty much in slow motion. When we got our bill she didn't charge my date for two of the beers. I finally got mine well after I was done with my meal. My date wanted to give her this fat tip. While he went up to pay I took the tip for myself and put down two pennis. I wrote on the napkin, your tip went to me because I had to tolerate you and your actions..next time don't pretend you work in Hooters. Thought you'd appreciate my two cents!

I guess a week later she got fired for getting caught in the bathroom with a customer! I never did go on another date with that guy either!!

WOW! That took some balls. Amazing, I would have given her a quarter and told her to stuff it. That is insane.

Yeah as I said before, that was rude of the girl to come out and ask like that.

While I am usually a very good tipper, I do require at least addiquate service for such. DH says I am critical of servers, I think I agree ;) If they give decent service I give 10-15%, above average gets 20-30% from me. Below average is lucky to get a dollar and not complained about!

I do think it is expected to to tip a server and I won't go to a full service restaurant if I don't plan to tip. However, I also think they should have to work for it. Crappy service and rude attitudes are uncalled for and will definitely lessen what I give if anything.

This is too weird. My Mom and I just had ANOTHER large discussion about this very subject. She believes that people shouldn't tip because it is the resteraunts responsibility to pay their workers a decent wage. Her attitude just makes me so very angry. I keep telling her to take it up with her congressman...not stiff the poor waitress. Now, she tips...but not very well...and bitches about it at every turn. Thankfully, my Dad IS a good tipper, so most of the time, I don't have to worry about it! LOL

I, on the other hand, have had to work for tips (bartending and waitressing), so am a very generous tipper, as long as the service is decent...or I can see they are VERY busy!! One of my requirements is that they come back and ask how things are and if you need anything. And I don't mean just before they hand you the check! LOL

I would never think to ASK someone for a tip...that's rude. I think I would be talking to that waitresses boss about her attitude. She needs a good talking to.

I agree, that was so rude! I mean, I almost always tip my servers, but to come out and ask for it, I'd be like are you for real?

im always a very generous tipper. i go out with my kids and the area we were in when we leave looks like a tornado went through it lol. i leave bigger tips when its a regular waitress, they are soo nice and sweet to the kids too. i have a soft spot for people who treat my kids like gold. but if you dont even smile at them your lucky if you are getting a dollar. my friend and i decided to boycott there. so it makes me feel a little better lol

I personally have never loved kids, but when I was a server I was always nice and made a point to be good to the kids too. Sadly, many people with kids don't tip well and often leave a huge mess. It used to get on my nerves really bad.

Now when my sister and I go out with her 3 yr old, we try to clean up any big messes and still leave nice tips. Unless of course the servers are crappy ;)

Until my husband moved up here and works where he does now he was a waiter for about 8 yrs at the same place down south. He always made good tips. He would flirt when needed and sucked up to the kids. He said parents with kids just loved having him as a waiter. He made sure the kids were taken care of.

My ex mother in law is a waitress and this is all she has ever done for as long as I have known her. She pays her car payment just in the coin she gets in her tips. She has been in the same place since she has lived here and that has been about9 or 10 yrs now I think.

My husband is a great tipper if the service is right. He has been there and knows what to look for. I am awful at knowing what to tip so I get to leave it up to him.

I have had some very bad waitresses and some very good ones. But none have ever asked for their tip. I could just imigine my husbands response to that one.

That is just rude of her to ask. I'm a good tipper unless they are rude and don't do a good job. I wouldn't have given her anything and would talk to her manager.

Being an ex chef, I know, that the servers got paid much less then me. Some only minimum wage. So the tips were their income. I did what I could to make their tips bigger. If I messed up an order the server could've missed a tip.
However I never heard of one of my servers asking for a tip. We all knew tips came as a gift for great service, and they never asked. My servers would even tip me sometimes, but never did I ask.
What that server did was rude and uncalled for. If she was one of mine, I would've had a long talk with her, in the walk-in freezer.

jeez how many different careers have you had lol.

Cooking was always my primary career till I moved out of the Twin Cities and no where up here would pay the bills, so I retired to do trucking.
Keeping a roof over my wifes head was more important then my favorite job, and that was 110 degree kitchen, in front of the open pit grill.
Maybe one day I'll go back to the kitchen, but for now.........

The Twin Cities are Minneapolis and St. Paul in Minnesota. That is where the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins play.
