View Full Version : Dilemmas of a Plus-Size Bride

I'm thinking about ordering a dress online, but I won't be able to try it on first. Since I'm a plus-size bride, it's also hard for me to find a dress in the store in my size, so if I want to try it on, I'd have to end up buying it first. And we all know how it goes: we've got to try the dresses on just to find "the one." Just because it looks good on a model doesn't mean it'll look good on me. I've got to not only like the look, but also "feel" like a bride in it. I've heard from many a bride that when you try on a dress, you'll know if it's "the one" or not. Any suggestions? Thank you SO much!

I would do whatever you can to try on as many as you can before ordering online. David's Bridal, while not my favorite store on the planet, has an extensive plus-size selection.... at least by trying on a few gowns first, you can get a better idea of what you like, and what works well on your body.
Aside from that, when shopping online, I'd make sure you're shopping from a line that SPECIALIZES in plus-size gowns, as opposed to a cookie-cutter line that simply has an extended size range... as you said, a gown that looks great on a size 2 model might not work on you as well, whereas a gown that was DESIGNED for a curvier figure will look better and fit better.
I know there are other major manufacturers that have specifically plus-size lines (off the top of my head, I think Allure is one of them). Check out sites like House of Brides that have specific areas on their site for plus size gowns. And last but not least, EXAMINE THOSE SIZE CHARTS, and take really accurate measurements (better yet, have someone take them FOR you).
Good luck!!

Why are you buying online? If it is because you are saving money, my suggestion is to go to a bridal shop and try on similar styles. You may find the exact dress in stock somewhere. By just trying on different styles, you will know which ones flatter your figure the most and then you can always go back on line to order. My advice to you is to order a size larger- it is easier to take in then let out.
Good Luck.

Donna,
The reason I might order online is because there's a vast amount of websites dedicated to the plus-size bride. I'm definitely going to order one size bigger if I do go ahead with ordering online.

I am plus size and I didn't really have that big of a problem finding dresses in bridal shops. I do live in a fairly large city though, so maybe that's why. I would be very hesitant to buy a dress off the internet. I hope you figure something out!

I definitely agree that trying on as many styles as possible before ordering is the best idea. You can eliminate the ones that totally don't work. Plus size gals can wear many styles you may not consider with the proper foundation garments. Order from the size charts according to your largest corresponding measurement, be it bust, waist, or hips. Line up your alteration specialist as far in advance as possible. Personally, I provide measuring services as a courtesy, for brides, maids, and tuxes.
