Sorry ladies but I have to share in my excitment and dismay. We will be moving soon (that's the good part), so we've been looking for a moving truck. Can you believe some of the trucks I've found are going for like $900.00 what's up with that? Any suggestions? I have been to Penske, Budget, Ryder & U-Haul
Yay! It's so exciting that you're moving! Sorry, I have no suggestions, but I just wanted to let you know that I'm happy for your wonderful news!

Wow...I can't believe that trucks are $900. I don't know if the prices are different in other states, but I know here in Iowa, you pay by the mile you put on the UHaul or there is a flat rate for moving within town. Then you pay to fill up the truck with gas when you return it. I didn't know if you were including all of that into the $900 or not.....
Anyways, congrats on moving! Its always fun to get a new place, but never fun to move.

You must be moving across the country then? Or at least through a couple of states? If so, it IS going to be that expensive. If not, then someone is yanking your chain.
wow that is a lot of money. look around for coupons. sometimes welcome centers have moving coupons or online? i know penske has a AAA discount.
congrats and good luck!!

Thank you ladies for all the congrats! We will be moving from Columbus Ohio to Fayetteville North Carolina. I knew it was going to cost us a pretty penny but I didn't expect it to be this much. We were quoted a normal $450-$475 for a 10' truck about a week ago and now the price has gone up to $985.
Anyway it's just nice to be moving, I have been packing up atleast a box a day since the beginning of the month and I have about 20 boxes in my living room/dining room now. We're almost completely ready to go!
And Katie, our U-Haul is the same way, only when it's in town they charge you for mileage, when it's out of town you get unlimited mileage. In our case the Penske & U-Haul are saying that we will get 629 miles to work with, and our move is like 613 miles!

Do you have a lot of stuff to move? ABF or some other trucking company drops off a container and you fill it and they move it and frankly I think it costs just as much to drive yourself. I would look into trucking companies to see the cost of moving there as well.
VERY exciting to be moving, good luck. let us know how itgoes

$900 sounds excessive unless you are getting the moving guys with it. Is that just the truck rental?
We have an unofficial "moving day" in Quebec .... no, it's not like it's law or that there aren't execeptions to the rule but most landlords run their leases from June 1 through June 30th and most people selling or buying a house are looking for a July 1 move in date.
Of course this just benefits the moving companies and truck rental places. You can normally rent a truck for about $100 or so for a whole weekend but come July 1st weekend .... you will be lucky to book a truck and if you do, you can expect to pay $600 - $700 for 4 hours.
We refuse to sign any July to June lease because everyone plus their grandmother is moving stuff July 1st. If you happen to live on a street that is hosting a Canada Day parade, you are also SOL. LOL

yes ma'am, that quote is for the truck only, that's not including the gas or mileage!

Being a trucker I know how expensive truck usage is. Plus there's a few other things they add to the equations. Is it one-way, or a local move. If you go one-way, that means one less truck at their location, you picked it up from, so tey charge more. Local you return it to the same place nd they charge less. Insurance on those are outrageous. It's not lie your typical auto insurace, it's comercial. Lots more details go into comercial insurance, such as; full coverage, liabilities higher, etc. Then maitnance, the D.O.T. can and will pull over a Uhaul, Ryder, etc, for random inspections, by law they consider it a comercial veichle, so they can for no reason, pull it over to inspect it. Now if they find something wrong, that may make it unsafe to dive, they put you Out of Service, which means, it gets towed and repaired. If you drive it when Out of Service, thats a $10000 fine. So the rental company, constantly maintains thems, to prevent them from being shut down by the police.. One new tire for a truck, can cost twice as much, then four new ones on your car; over a gallon of oil, can be used in a truck. This costs them money.
My suggestion, check with a moving/trucking company, basicly you pack it, they load and drive for you. They cover the insurance, fuel, etc. and may be cheaper.
One more thing, if you do rent a UHaul, Ryder, etc. Know the weight of the truck, if you cross state lines, you may have to stop at scales. If you see a sign that says "All trucks over 10,000 lbs Must enter Scale" That does not mean only semi's or profesional drivers, that means EVERY TRUCK OVER 10,000 LBS, NO MATTER IF IT'S A UHAUL, RYDER OR NOT. Running a scale can be a fine of a few $100's on up to $1000's, plus loss of license, jail time, impounded truck, etc.

No problem, I should know how much it is. I got pulled over on a random inspection the other day and Shut Down for a leaking air line, that controlls the brakes. The ticket (if he'd given me one) would've been $5000 out of my pocket.
The tow and repair alone was over a grand for my company.
They put alot of miles on a truck (me I do over 2000 a week), thats alot of wear and tear and maitnance costs. I've driven a few rentals, with twice as many miles as my truck, and they were newer.
Best of Luck!!!!!!

Does a friend or other family member have a trailer you can use? That's what Chris used when he moved for college.

I have some great news!
My future father-in-law (who is flying up to help us with the move) was talking to my FH yesterday and asking how all the planning was going and if we had found a moving truck yet. My FH told him our situation and how we were quoted a real cheap price a week ago but not the price has practically sky-rocketed. My future FIL then said that he would be happy to pay for our rental truck! How cool is that? And not too long after that we found a nice deal on a Budget truck for $647.30. It does have a 150.00 refundable deposit which brings the total to $797.30 but because it's refundable we're ok with that. We're so excited, almost fully packed and ready to go! Only 17 days to go!!!

Congrats on finding a truck. Just remember buckle up and drive safely. Depending on how big it is, takes room to turn, and objects in mirrors are always closer then they appear. And if your crossing state lines on your move, remember, the scales
Load the lightest on top and heaviest on the bottom. Try to keep the weight equal from left to right., and pack it tight. Stuff towards the back of a truck, have tendency to slide around and tip more easeily then in the front.
And give yourself plenty of room infront of you, while driving, people think trucks an stop on a dime, and will cut you off, no they cant. If it's a manual transmission, use it to slow down the truck, don't ride the brakes, brake fade may happen, and that can cause an accident, especialy if it has air brakes (wich some Budget trucks do have) Air brakes can stop a truck easier, but take a few seconds to engage then mechanical or hydraulics.
And block the wheels while loading and unloading, this will insure the truck doesnt roll away on you (someone may forgot to set the brake, or it slips into neutral from all the bumping around inside; better safe then sorry)
Just some tips to make it safer for you out there and the move easier.
IMO: Budget Trucks are in beter shape then Uhauls, they take better care of them.
