Yesterday morning around 4am we had someone bang on our door and ring our doorbell. DH got up and checked and no one was there.
This morning he went out to his truck and the back window had been smashed. I told him he should report it, but he said the cops won't do anything.
He's lived in the house since he was a kid and I've been living there for four years and we've never had anything like this happen. And we've never had any trouble with our neighbors. But since about a year ago we have had some shady people moving into the neighborhood. There are now certain areas I won't go for walks with my dogs in. I don't know. Might be time to start thinking about moving. We've talked about it, but we like our house. But if stuff like this continues to happen I worry about staying.

I would report it just incase. Yeah, the cops probably can't find the person but it's still a good idea to report it. The person who smashed the window in is probably the person that rang the doorbell. Next time, I would only look out the window I wouldn't answer the door either. You just never know these days. Either way it's probably a good idea to file a police report. If something like this continues or someone else has this done to them perhaps they could beef up patrol in your area.
I'm so sorry this happened to the two of you. I hope the find the person who did this!

Thats crazy scary! I would report it as well...one to have it on file and two...maybe a police cruiser can drive through the neighborhood a couple times a night to maybe ward off this kind of thing. Definitely look out the window and don't open that door next time!!!! Hope nothing else goes on for you!

Talk about scary! I'd file a report too, just so it's on record in case smashing windows in the neighborhood becomes someone's new past time. There are some communities in my area that have had trouble with kids busting out car/truck windows at night.

OMG that is really scary! I would have been so upset. Pleas report it, I work for probation and parole and you have no idea how important it is to have this on file. The police may not do anything NOW, but if this keeps happening or it happens to someone else they can trace it back and follow the incident reports and most likely arrest someone and when they go to court those reports will be really helpful. Be care, lock your doors at night and be safe!!!! Sorry this has happened to you and your husband!

I think you should really convince your DH to report it. At the least, they would have a file of the incident.
Oh, dont forget to set your alarms and lock your doors.

That's terrible I would also report it so it would be on file.. That way if it happens again they may just take some action. Best of luck that this doesn't happen again.

Thats terrbile! We used to get egged. Ruined the paint on my parents car. It turned out to just be kids and they where also slashing tires and throwing rocks at peoples cars. Get wireless security cameras for the front of the house (cars, door) and all other entries. Ive seen them for as low as $100 dollars. That way if they do it again you have it on camera, and something more to say to the police. Also get motion activated floodights for the front and back. That will detur them. I love that show to catch a thief, its got great ideas.

omg how scarry!!!!!!!! I would be so freaked out. I wouldnt' walk your dogs alone if i were you. People are crazy!! Did you all hear about the girl who got kidnapped & killed at Target in Kansas? Thats the Target my aunt goes to. GOSH that makes me so mad and scared to go anywhere alone. You cant even let your kids walk to the neighbors house anymore. UH!

I'd report it. Most police agencies will do more drive throughs of the area at night if they know suspicious activity is going on.

I asked DH again to report it. He's going to talk to our neighbors across the street, one's a fireman and one's a police officer. Maybe one of them will convince him to report it. We have a motion detector thing that will ring inside the house if someone comes within so many feet of our house. And we've been really careful about locking doors because of robberies in the area. I think we need to start being more careful with the cars though. Maybe not keep garage door openers in them anymore and make sure we take anything of value out of them. Although nothing was taken from the truck, but still, you just never know.

Definitely take the garage door openers out, and anything that has your address on it...someone told me that people will break into your car, take your garage door opener and something with your address on it, and break into your house! That sucks that people are so stupid, why why why? What posesses people to do these things?? Its a bummer. Sorry..but I would definitely report it so that the cops have record in case anything else happens, and you never know, they may bust the people somewhere else doing the same thing and have record that it happened at your house and can link them together.
Be careful, and definitely lock your doors!

I am sorry this happened to you guys.
I would definitely report it, if for nothing else that to just have a record of it in case something else happens and/or for your insurance.
As for being safe; I would definitely NOT have any spare keys, garage door openers, anything of value, or anything with your name and/or address on it in a car that is just out in the yard. And be sure to keep the car locked too.
Definitely lock all the doors in the house too. I carry pepper spray with me when I go walking with my dogs. I don't answer the door when I am home alone unless I am expecting someone. We also have a security system with cameras so I can see who is at the door.
If your neighborhood is getting that bad and you can't move then I would definitely be more cautious and look into getting an alarm/security system for your home and cars.

If you don't already have some sort of motion detector lights outside your home i would invest in some for security reasons. they are not that expensive at all and do a good job. if lights come on then they are more apt to go away. my hubby placed them all around our house before he left out for truck driving and i love them.

Update - he did report it. And two other cars in the neighborhood also had their windows broken. Had a cop car in the neighborhood for a long time yesterday. Really hope they catch whoever did it soon.
I would report it as well. Scary stuff nowadays! I swear about a month ago, I heard gun shots by my house. (I don't live in a bad neighborhood or anything and we do have wetlands & fields by us) It woke me up out of a dead sleep so I know I wasn't dreaming. My neighbor just told me last week 3 cars got the windshields broken while in there driveways (we park in our garage) and last year I think there was a bunch of mailboxes broken and marks in peoples yards from tires. I don't go anywhere by myself at night.

OMG how scary is this?.................
I'm so glad you got your husband to report it but I would have reported it myself. Cops tend to react more strongly when there is a hysterical woman involved.
Make sure you do all the light sensor things recommended in here, you don't want to regret saving a few dollars later.
Don't ake any chances

Wow that's pretty jacked up. If he's lived there his whole life, is he close with any of the neighbors? Maybe starting a neighborhood watch program would be a good idea? Stuff like that tends to keep the riff-raff out.
