View Full Version : Sweetheart neckline
I'm so in love with my dress, but I'm also thinking of changing it up a bit.
Here it is (still needs to be altered)...

I'm thinking that it might look nice to make the top look more like a sweetheart neckline because right now it just cuts straight across. I don't think that I'm going to wear it with the straps either. Do you think that changing the neckline would look good? I'm just not sure...

Your dress is very pretty; I like the way it is :)
For those that may not know, this dress has a sweetheart neckline ...

But if you want to change it and the seamstress can do it I think the sweetheart neckline would look nice too.

I wouldn't suggest it. I think it looks very very smooth like that. very flowing. I too would take out the straps, but everything else looks great just the way it is... :)

I agree. Get rid of the straps, but keep the neckline the way it is. With the "waist" being empire, I don't think the sweetheart neckline would look that great.

That is a good point; most dresses with the empire waist have a drappy or straight neckline.
It would be aweful to cut up the dress and then not like it. No telling what it would cost either.
Like I said, I like the dress the way it is. I think once altered it will be great.
Good luck in whatever you deside to do.

The seamstress should be able to pin it in the sweetheart first so you can see it. I would do that and look at it then make your decision. But I do agree to take off the straps too.
i would take off the straps as well. like everyone else has said, the empire waist makes a straighter strapless probably look better but it wouldnt hurt to have it visualized with the seamstress's pins.
btw, it's a beautiful dress on you!!

i love your dress as it is. but i would lose the straps on it. i just think it would look better without them. you could also think about if you wanted to, maybe buying a rhinestone brooch and pinning it to pull down the neckline between to show some cleavage? i hope this makes sense. lol. but i think this would look good as well.
I didn't think about it being an empire waist and I've never seen a sweetheart empire! I had tried to make it look sweetheart-ish by trying to move it around with my hand while I had it on...but it was kind of hard to visualize with my big ol' hand in the way! I'm not going to have anybody touch it until I can have a better visual of it though! I think that it may just look weird to me because it doesn't fit right in the bust right now; it's weird and kind of hanging there and not giving me any shape. I have also considered adding a brooch as well. I guess I really just need to see how it looks when if fits well because right now it surely doesn't. Thanks y'all!

I am not a seamstress but I don't think it would be all that easy to change it to a sweetheart neckline.
Perhaps just a little tuck in behind at the cleavage as Treasia suggested?
One of our posters, VenusElaine (http://forums.onewed.com/member.php?u=1034) is a seamstress ... you might ask her opinion.

Thanks for the tip about VenusElaine! Yeah, I was kind of invisioning a tuck, but the only way that I could think of to describe it was to compare it to the sweetheart neckline.

Not everyone hates straps. It's all individual. Personally I think this dress would look more elegant without the straps and show off her gorgeous colarbone structure. But on other dresses, straps are definitely needed...Know what I mean ;)

Nah, just on this particular dress. On YOUR dress, the straps work wonderful. And you have the sweetheart neckline. :D

I don't have a problem with straps; in fact I personally prefer them. But if you have the right body and the right dress, then strapless can look nice too. Me personally, I don't think I would ever wear a strapless dress.

On this dress I would also lose the straps... Its such a gorgeous dress but other than that I wouldn't change a thing..
I am a big one for straps but it could be that I can't pull off a dress w/out them. LOL...

Yeah I've been looking at this more and I think agree with losing the straps. Also, it would be easy to pull the front into a sort of 'cinched' sweetheart line. You could add a brouch too. Take a tiny needle nad a thread with a big knot and run it through the back of the fabric in the middle and pull. this will give you can idea of what a professional can do - then you can decide whether it works or not.

I have such narrow shoulders that the straps just fall in a strange place on me. I never thought that I would end up in a strapless gown! Before going shopping my dad was like no strapless, no strapless...then he saw me in a strapless and he liked it. Haha. Surprise! Maybe I will try to cinch it just a bit to see what it might look like...without harming it at all of coarse!

I absolutly love your dress, Keely!
I also dont know about the sweetheart neckline, but maybe the cinched up look would be ok...its kind of hard for me to picture. I agree about taking the straps off, it is such an elegant dress, and I think the straps kind of take away from that. Let us know what you decide (and pics of it too!)

Good Luck with whatever you decide :)

May (:hothead: month; proms and graduation on top of June brides) has passed, so here I am.
I would not suggest cutting the bodice into a sweetheart, because empire style gowns seldom have one, and would be difficult to keep symmetrical on the ruching of this particular bodice. Gathering the center front down somewhat would be possible, and accentuate the ruching already present on the bodice. My concern with losing the straps would be if the bodice has enough foundation to support you with the back open as it is. Are the straps already detatchable, or would you be removing what is meant to be part of the structure?
Get thee to a qualified seamstress who can physically fit you and examine the structure of your gown for the best advice!

I forgot to send you a PM as somebody had suggested. Uh oh, I'm a forgetful bride already! Thank you for the advice. I'll be doing no cutting on the dress, possibly gather the front a little, but I think wants it fits me better, I'll be much happier with the bust. No, the straps aren't detachable, but the women at the shop said that their seamstress said that the dress could be worn without the straps. I haven't spoken directly to the seamstress yet though. When do you suggest brides go in for their first fitting, last fitting, etc?

I know I'm a little late here but I wanted to let you know that your dress is just stunning!!! Beautiful on you. I too would say toodles to the straps. I had the option for straps on me and I looked all squared off with them. It's just beautiful nice choice!

January is not a "heavy" bridal month, so 3-4 months is sufficient to contact and schedule your fittings. Fittings should not start more than 3 months prior to the wedding, but may need to be scheduled (JUNE BRIDES!) as much as six to twelve months in advance. I am speaking as a solitary manager/alteration specialist. For all things bridal, check out www.leanna.com. Very professional and informative site.
