How We Met
Douglas and I had met before, April my maid of honor loved to throw small parties for all of her friends. Douglas and I sat for hours at one of them and talked. I was instantly drawn to him. There was something about him I couldn’t quite put my finger on. After the party, Doug talked to some of his friends about how much he liked me. Then they asked the most important question. Did you get her phone number? And he completely forgot to ask!
Years later April and I where sitting out in front of her house and Douglas happened to walk by! Friends of his stopped to offer him a ride home, but he decided he wanted to walk. We sat and talked for hours again, and April invited him to spend the day in Berkeley with us. I knew there was something really special about him. We walked around Berkeley and ate Ethiopian food. When we returned back, the night was ending and Doug started to head home. Again, forgetting to ask for my number! But this time my guardian angel, April stepped in and made sure he got it! We had our first official date a week later and have been in love ever since!
Douglas still says that he might not have gotten the courage to ask me out if it hadn't been for an acquaintance from work who stole my phone number from his locker. After hearing Douglas talk about me, he wanted to ask me out! He called me and tried to get me to go out on a date with him. He didn’t want to take no for an answer. I was so mad! I got Doug’s number from April and called him to give him a piece of my mind for passing out my number! ( Or so I thought) Of course, after telling him what happened, let’s just say that guy didn’t want to mess with Doug and I never heard from him again. Douglas then asked me on our first date.
It was a very strange occurrence of events that brought us together. We happened to be sitting outside in the first place because some guy was harassing April and I and we we’re waiting for him to show up at the house. Doug passed up several opportunities for a ride home, April out of the blue invited him to come with us to Berkeley, and then that guy stole my phone number. If I didn’t believe in fate before, after meeting Douglas I have no doubt.
Our First Date
Douglas and I decided to meet for our first date at a local pool hall in my hometown of Manteca. The Pumpkin festival held the first week of October was the same day. After playing pool and walking through the pumpkin festival we met up with April my maid of honor, and a friend Nicole.
Douglas and I where hungry and decided we wanted to get some Chinese food. Of course, trying to seem like I knew where I was, insisted we could easily walk to a favorite Chinese restaurant of mine. Needless to say we got lost. We spent three hours talking, and wandering around town until we finally found the restaurant! We had our first kiss and Douglas asked me to be his girlfriend so the walk was not a total loss.
We met back up with April, Nicole and other friends to visit the local carnival that was in town for the festival. Nicole’s date asked us how long we had been together. He thought we had been together for at least a year. He was shocked when we laughed and said about...4 hours? I love roller coasters so I naturally assumed Doug could handle anything I could throw at him when it came to the rides. He couldn’t. Through the loss of direction, the soy sauce spills and the motion sickness it still felt like a wonderful date. Even though we had so much trouble on our first date we both knew there was something special about each other.
Over time
Over the course of our nearly six year relationship Douglas and I have experienced some great things together. On the half year anniversary of our first date Douglas rented a limousine and we spent the day going around San Francisco like rock stars. We’ve taken some great trips together to Disneyland, San Francisco and Las Vegas. Even though we have shared some great experiences, some of our fondest memories of each other are just staying at home watching movies.
When we first started dating neither of us had reliable transportation so Douglas often took cabs out to see me. We would spend hours on the phone just talking with each other about anything we could think of. Douglas even wrote me a poem and we would make up funny little songs about each other. Still do im afraid. =)
We have met a lot of interesting people, made great friends and seen each other grow as people. We have supported each other through tragedy and triumph. He has supported me through the difficult experience of getting myself through college. He has been one of my greatest supporters and even gave me start up money for my business. Even when I didn’t believe in myself, he believed in me. It’s because of him that I have been able to go above and beyond my own expectations of myself. It has been a very interesting and rewarding experience for both of us. I think we have both changed a lot over the last almost six years in many wonderful ways.
Our Plans for the Future
Douglas and I would like to begin saving for the down payment on a home. We will hopefully be able to afford a home in the next few years. Now that I am finished with college, Douglas is looking to persue a new career and I am considering working on my masters degree. We have no immediate plans for children but we hope to start a family in the next five years. Im the avid entrepreneur so I would love to see us owning our own business in the near future.

Doug's Romantic Disneyland Proposal
..~~Douglas' Version~~..
I had been planning for a month or two before I bought the ring. I came up with the idea of proposing more subtly, something nice and quiet like at a restaraunt but then we where going on vacation with Shelby's parents and Disneyland came up so I took the chance. We kept the ring in Shelby's Dad's luggage. I knew I wasn't going to propose in vegas, I wasn't nervous untill a couple minutes before. We met up with my sister Geri and Brother in Law Butch and spent the day in Disneyland. At 4:30, we met up with Shelby's family. Her little sister Sarah Lead lead her upto Sleeping Beauty's Castle on the bridge near Snow White's Fountain. After she closed her eyes, thats when I started fumbling with the box and I dropped the ring. It didnt get that close to falling in the water but I was ready to dive in after it if it did. I got down on one knee and proposed. And of course the first thing she said was "My Ring!" and of course she said yes. Shelby had saw a ring just like it and she loved it but didn't think I would be able to get it. Her mom started looking for me and found it. After I proposed we went to the rainforest cafe with everyone.

October 20, 2006...Douglas and I had been together for five years when we went on a vacation with my parents for my 21st birthday. A Las Vegas sweep Disneyland vacation. By chance, (really) his oldest sister and her children where in disneyland and we spent the day with them. At 4:30pm I was lead to Sleeping Beauty's Castle by Snow Whites Wishing well. I was told to close my eyes and I heard something drop! It was my engagement ring! Douglas almost dropped it into the lagoon! But he recovered and told me to open my eyes and asked me to marry him! With our families there to see it. Douglas got me a beautiful wedding set .(Engagement ring is pictured above) We where so lucky to get pictures of it. A passer by took up close shots and I gave him my card but he never sent them...=(
