BLACKSBURG, Va. —
One person was reportedly killed and as many as 17 people are being treated for gunshot wounds after at least one gunman opened fire at the Virginia Tech (javascript:siteSearch('Virginia Tech');) University campus in Blacksburg, according to officials.

A state government official told The Associated Press that at least one person was killed in a shooting incident at the West Ambler Johnston residence hall early Monday morning.

Judith Chambers, a spokeswoman at Montgomery Regional Hospital, where the injured were taken, told FOX News that 17 individuals from the college are being treated for gunshot wounds and other injuries. The conditions vary and some are in surgery, she said.

School officials planned a noon EDT press conference Monday.

"Police have one shooter in custody and as part of routine police procedure, they continue to search for a second shooter," the school's Web site read Monday. "All people in university buildings are required to stay inside until further notice. All entrances to campus are closed."

The school's Web site confirmed the shooting at opposite ends of the 2,600-acre campus at West Ambler Johnston, a residence hall, and reported "multiple victims" at Norris Hall, an engineering building.

Local FOX affiliate WFXR-TV in Richmond reported that one shooting occurred between 7:15 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. at West Ambler Johnston, and another at 10 a.m. at Norris Hall.

Virginia Tech student Blake Harrison said he was on his way to class near Norris Hall when he saw chaos.

"This teacher comes flying out of Norris, he's bleeding from his arm or his shoulder ... all these students were coming out of Norris trying to take shelter in Randolph [Hall]. All these kids were freaked out," Harrison said.

The students and faculty were barricading themselves in their classrooms after what one person described as an Asian student wearing a vest opened fire.

The shooter was "wearing a vest covered in clips was just unloading on their door, going from classroom to classroom … they said it never seemed like it was going to stop and there was just blood all over," Harrison said.

Matt Merone, a campus senior, was on his way to campus Monday morning when he saw a police officer grab a male student who was bleeding from his stomach area and put him into a vehicle, which whisked him away. He told FOX News that his roommate saw the first shooting.

Police are on the scene and are investigating along with the FBI. All classes have been canceled, according to the campus newspaper, The Collegiate Times, and students and faculty have been told to stay inside. Tuesday classes have also been canceled. Faculty and staff on the Burruss Hall side of the campus drillfield are being released and asked to go home effective immediately. Faculty and staff on the War Memorial Hall side of the drillfield are asked to leave at 12:30 p.m.

The campus newspaper also reported that because of serious wind, helicopters cannot be used to transfer the injured. Ambulances are apparently being used to transport the victims to Montgomery Regional Hospital.

The university community is urged to be cautious. Anyone who observes anything suspicious or has information about this case is encouraged to contact the Virginia Tech Police at (540) 231-6411.

"There are police driving throughout the neighborhoods with a loudspeaker saying, 'This is an emergency, everyone stay inside, we're looking for suspicious activity," Brittany Sammon, a senior Virginia Tech student staying at an apartment off campus, told FOX News on Monday. "There's no one outside at all, there's no traffic, there's nothing … everyone's doing what they said."

Sammon, who has a brother and roommate confined to their buildings on campus, said she first got the e-mail from the school regarding the shooting at 9:30 a.m. Monday.

"It was just very short and brief and kind of scary, because it didn't have any details at all in it," she said. "It's definitely nerve wracking."

The West Ambler Johnston dorm, commonly known on campus as West AJ, houses about 895 students and is located near West End Market and Dietrick Dining Center.

Virginia Tech has the largest full-time student population in Virginia, with more than 25,000 students. It consists of eight colleges and graduate school and offers 60 bachelor's degree programs and 140 master's and doctoral degree programs.

The main campus includes more than 100 buildings located on 2,600 acres, and includes an airport.

Last August, the campus was closed when an escaped jail inmate allegedly killed a hospital guard and a sheriff's deputy involved in a massive manhunt. The accused gunman, William Morva (javascript:siteSearch('William Morva');), faces capital murder charges.
On April 13, the campus closed three of its academic halls after they received a letter stating that explosive devices were in the building. Classes were canceled for the remainder of the day. A bomb threat was also made against Torgerson Hall on April 2.

"For some reason, this just seemed a little different … it was more than just a sick joke someone was playing," one student told FOX News about those bomb threats.

*Creeps me out. I used to go to Radford University which is about 15 miles from this school. And I had friends that I would visit that lived in "AJ". Wow.*

Our city is following this story closely. It's all over our news. It wasn't all that long ago that shooting broke out at Dawson College in Montreal.

How horrific. One can only imagine what the families must be going through ......

It's so sad. I didn't even hear about this until about an hour ago when my aunt called because I had cartoons on for my son so I wasn't watching the news. My mom has a friend she went to high school with who lives in Virginia and has two children in college. She's not sure if that's where they go to school, but I hope it's not. She said she's going to email her this afternoon to make sure they're all okay.

Over 30 dead.

That many injured.

How does one person do this much damage.

Bloodiest school shooting in US history. It's a sad day.

I cannot imagine. I literally makes me sick. I cannot look at the news anymore.

And people are saying he just "snapped" after an argument with his girlfriend.

BS. For him to have 2 guns and enough ammo to kill 30 people and injure so many others, it had to be premeditated and just pure evil. Period.

This is just too awful. I didn't even hear about it until I went out on my lunch break and heard it on the radio. My heart goes out to these victim's families. I can't even imagine what they are going through right now.

I'm watching coverage right now. At this point, they say 32 dead, 21 injured. And they also mentioned he was possibly looking for his girlfriend as he was going through killing people. The shooter is dead, but they don't know yet if he killed himself or if police shot him. There were also two bomb threats at the school last week....coincidence? Ooh...and the Columbine shootings were this week (the 20th) in 1999...that's creepy.

I work for the State's Baptist Association. And one of our largest ministries was on this campus. Please be in prayer for all of the students and that students can lean on each other for support!

The President will address the nation at 4:15 pm EST.

The Governor of Virginia will be on the campus tomorrow. He was out of the country and is now on his way back.

What a terrible thing for these college kids to have as a memory of their college years.

I still can't believe it.

I cannot believe this. What a sad sad day for these victims and family. I just cannot understand how he started at 7:30 am and stopped for 2 hrs. and they never found him. I just don't understand that. I am so heartbroken for the families. My Love and Prayers go out to them

What I can't understand is why they had a lockdown after the first person got shot and then LIFTED the lockdown before the shooter was caught!

Blacksburg and the VT campus police are both very small forces and probably don't have the man-power and ability to handle something of this magnitude. I would say they were ill-prepared, at the least. But that's common for a small-town area where nothing ever happens. You know? Other than underage drunkiness and petty theft, not too much else goes on.

I think the administration should be held responsible, though. Classes should have been cancelled immediately after the first shooting and until that person or persons were in custody. If the person was nutty enough to shoot 2 or 3 people already, you don't know what else they may do or be capable of.

What I don't understand is how everything is related. They have him shooting his ex and an RA at 7 something in the morning and then across campus 2 hours later doing mass shootings. Why go ALL the way across campus to shoot people in a classroom building. If you "snap", you don't wait 2 hours and go shoot other people.

There were plenty of people in the dorm or walking to classes that he could have taken out his anger on.

I think it was premeditated. I really do. Maybe he knew his girlfriend was cheating on him and he was going to take her out. And he knew he would spend life in jail and figured that he may as well do something to really make a point. Become notorious. Obviously, he was a little "off" anyway.

My mind can't even comprehend it, really. I think that's why I'm so confused. Not that I could do it, but I can sort "get" those that walk in on their husband or wife with another person and just lose it. But they wouldn't go down to the grocery store 2 hours later and start shooting. Because one had nothing to do with the other.

It will be interesting to find out all the details about this guy and what really happened and if it was all pre-planned.

Bizarre.

Yea, that is what I was wondering as well. One student said he and classmates had to sit in front of the door to make sure he cannot reenter the classroom and shoot again. It is just soo scary!

Yeah, I'm watching Fox News right now and some of the students are saying they went to classes this morning because apparently the only warning was an email sent two hours after the first shootings began around 7am...so they didn't get notified until 9:30am and if they didn't check their email, they never got the message.

They were interviewing some woman who works for a campus security company who said that if the college would have bought some program that doesn't cost a lot, many lives would have been saved. I guess this program is set up to send out text messages or something to every student's cell phone to let them know to stay in their rooms.

Also, it was mentioned that this school had a shooting incident last August so they should have been more prepared.

That is horrible. I am praying that they are safe. Please keep us updated if you hear anything.

My mom's friend's children go to college in VA but we were lucky enough to find out they go to University of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University so they weren't there, though they have friends there I guess.

This is what the headline said on Yahoo! homepage.
Death toll rises to 33 in worst shooting incident in U.S. history.

I was at work all day and didn't hear anything about it until someone came in after 6 pm. This is so sad and I am so sorry for those students and families. I am so glad I don't understand how someone could do this...if I did, I might be capable of something compatable. Disgusting!

From foxnews.com

"
Trey Perkins, who was sitting in a German class in Norris Hall, told The Washington Post that the gunman barged into the room at about 9:50 a.m. and opened fire for about a minute and a half, squeezing off 30 shots in all.
The gunman, Perkins said, first shot the professor in the head and then fired on the students. Perkins said the gunman was about 19 years old and had a "very serious but very calm look on his face."
"Everyone hit the floor at that moment," said Perkins, 20, of Yorktown, Va., a sophomore studying mechanical engineering. "And the shots seemed like it lasted forever."
Erin Sheehan, who also was in the German class, told the student newspaper, the Collegiate Times, said she was one of only four of the approximately two dozen people in the class to walk out of the room. The rest were dead or wounded, she said."

That's so horrible.

I have several friends that attend VT. Nick (one fo my friends from high school and student at VT) made a list of all the students from my high school that attend VT and are having them all "check in" to make sure the whole crew is okay. There are about 100-150 people from my high school that graduated in 03, 04, and 05 that I know. Almost everyone has said they were okay but we're still waiting to hear from a few of them (maybe 5 at the most). Cell phone service has been jammed down there for quite some time and a lot of people have been evacuated from the campus leaving everyone up here wondering if they're okay.

Jonathan is still waiting to hear from one of the guys from his "crew" in high school (who is also on the list my friend made). They all get together from time to time and he's supposed to be in our wedding. We're both praying that he's okay as well as the rest of the people that are unaccounted for from our little list. Hopefully tomorrow we'll hear from more as the situation dies down. Its really scary to think that it could happen and hit so close to home...

It just makes me sick. We were watching the news here at work and it was just gut wrenching. I hate hearing things like this and always say afterwards it could happen anywhere. I live in a college town and work right down the road from a college, my mom works on a college campus. It is just sooo scary. :(

I saw that. If you go to CNN.com there are so many eerie pictures of the shootings. It is just awful.
I remember here last year there was a shooting at a local elementary school. Two teachers were shot. It was just tragic.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The gunman who shot 32 people to death before killing himself at a Virginia university was described Tuesday as a depressed and deeply disturbed young man whose “grotesque” creative writing projects led a professor to refer him for psychological counseling.A day after the man, a 23-year-old senior English major, carried out the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, President Bush joined dozens of state and campus leaders to bring comfort to the students, faculty and staff of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Did anyone watch good morning america this morning? They interviewed his roomates, talked about a tatoo that he has, talked about the one song he used to listen to over and over again...It's sickening. This is what these type of people want and the media keeps doing it everytime there is a school shooting. I have been trying to bite my tongue about it but this type of attention to the people that commit these crimes is one reason why these tradegies happen again and again. They want to be immortal and by continuing to talk about him you are making him immortal. Lets talk about those people that will never see their child again, those young adults who will never get to achieve what they set out to do. It's sickening to watch dateline, good morning america and hear about who this person is. I don't care who he is, frankly I don't want to know. But, I just want to call of the news stations and beg them to stop talking about him!!

I couldn't agree more, they are glorifying the whole thing. Focus on the families who are in immense pain right now, focus on safety of college campuses and how it can be differnet. But stop making a huge story out of this man who took the lives of innocent people. It is just sickening and I cannot watch it anymore. It is just to aggrevating and painful to even read news articles anymore adn read about the victims. It could have been anyone, it could have been here at my college campus. Just really scary stuff.
