View Full Version : DIY sand for sand ceremony
OK, you smart and wonderful ladies, I need some help. I got some sand for our sand ceremony...but it is brown. I tried to use blue food coloring, but it turned it green. What can I use to make it blue. Our colors are baby blue and navy blue...so green just doesn't work. Thanks in advance for any help you can be.

I found this on a quick search, hope it helps -
To dye sand:
1 Tablespoon liquid fabric dye or 1 teaspoon powder dye
½ cup sifted sand
3/4 cup hot water
Plastic cup or container
Mix dye with hot water. Add sand. Let soak for two hours. Sand will be at the bottom of the cup. Carefully pour off colored water. Dry sand by spreading it on newspaper or paper towels. After dry, pour sand into cup or paper plate.
how about buy some blue sand? :)

I think usually for the sand, you buy it colored (although I may be wrong). Is there anyway you can return the brown sand you bought? I found this website that sells colored sand, at a reasonable price. They even have a sand "kit."

Wow!! I knew you ladies would be able to help me out. I live in the middle of nowhere, so when I went looking for sand...they didn't have any colored. All I could find was the brown. Thank you so much for all your help!!

Yeah they sell sand in all kinds of colors at craft stores. But the plain sand is usually cheaper and you can get more of it for less. So the dying thing might be a good idea if you are on a budget :bbmrgreen:
I was thinking the same thing...dyeing would be cheaper. But, it is still turning out green instead of blue. I think I'm going to go ahead and order it with the vases. Thank you all for your help. I knew you ladies would know!!

Yeah if the sand is that dark kind, it will not be the true color you want. You will have to start with that light "white sand" and use the liquid dye and let it sit, I have seen it work.
But it may be more trouble than it is worth, in these cases just go buy some ;) I have seen some on eBay too, as well as places like Michael's and Hobby Lobby.
I was just looking on ebay and it's more expensive than if I order it from the sites that was suggested. I'll keep looking and see what I can find. Thanks again for all the helpful suggestions.

I wanted you to know that I ordered the "kit" from this company with the light blue, navy, and white sands...and it came today. Oh, my it is beautiful. The sand sparkles. Thank you so much for finding this.
Now, for something funny. The other day when they sent me the tracking thing for UPS, it showed that it was picked up in Sturgis, SD...so I got to looking and this company is only about 3 hours away from me. Isn't that weird/???
