I knew someone who had a homemade wedding cake from a relative donated as a wedding gift. Is anyone else doing that? Have you heard about that? Would you consider having a homemade cake or would you prefer having it catered from a cake decorator? Oh decisions, decisions.

the woman who is doing my cake works from her home not a bakery thats why my cake is going to be so cheap it is only 48.00 and this is what it looks like, she makes them look exactly like the pictures 678

Our friend baked the cake (creamsicle cake with cointreau infused orange cream in between the layers). She added the fondant and then she brought it over to us partially decorated. I rearranged & added the decorations.
Hugh helped out with the cake decorations. Doesn't he look happy?

Note - the empty cointreu glass beside me? LOL That was all I consumed the day of my wedding. LOL it a 7:30 pm wedding too. Nummies!
The finished cake & program. We put two butterflies onto wires and put them into the cake just before it was displayed.
IMHO the layers could have been taller.

I love everyone's cakes!! I'm getting hungry!! lol!
A woman that works with my mom makes cakes as a hobby and only charges us for ingredients to make the cake.
She's doing a square 4 tier cake that will have a thick ribbon in gold around the center of each tier. Then I am having flowers in burgondy that are the same in my bridal bouquet around the bottom of each tier. I wish I could show ya'll a picture, but I don't and probably won't have one until the wedding day!

I was going to make the grooms cake. But everyone told me not to as I would not end of having any time to do anything else. As we are making our own food, and decorating the hall.

My Moma nd one of her friends will be making our cake. She's already started to go a little crazy looking at cakes for inspiration and so on.
It's just so much cheaper! There was no way possible we could buy it at the prices we have seen around here! I wish I had the luck of some of you guys finding these great deals!

We're having our reception at a Holiday Inn and the wedding cake is included with the price of the reception. We just have to go look through their book now and pick out a design we like.
My aunt used to be a wedding cake baker and if my venue weren't all inclusive she would definately be making it. Personally, I wouldn't get anybody that wasn't or hadn't been a professional to do it though. I am far too paranoid and I'd constantly be wondering if they were going to be able to pull it off.

Here was our cake table:

My mom made all of the mini pumpkin pies in the center. There were pumpkin roll slices to the right that we purchased from an Amish family at farmers market. And there were vanilla and chocolate cake squares to the left that my mom purchased from a friend who does cakes from her home.
I was going to order a cake from a baker, but I couldn't find a design of cake that I liked that would go with our theme....and I think my dad or someone came up with the idea for pumpkin pies. We were originally going to do big pumpkin pies and just cut normal slices but my mom liked the idea of the mini ones and said she would make them all.

My neighbor is making our cake as our wedding gift...its going to be a tres leches cake, and I gave her the recipe so she could make it for her annual easter get together to do a trial run, because the cake is a VERY moist three milk cake...HOPEFULLY it works! :lafhard:

If you go with a simple design - or use ribbon to decorate - it can be very easy. I did a cake for a friend's wedding last year - I'm a baker, but not a decorator - so I did a simple layer of buttercream with fondant that I bought pre-made from a local cake decorating store - then "wrapped" each layer with ribbon bows.

My Aunt is going to make our wedding cake. Although, she used to make wedding cakes professionally for a catering business...so I know it will look great.
