My mom and sister are throwing us an engagement party. I've never been to one, and I'm not sure what to expect. If you've had an engagement party, can you tell me about it? Thanks!

I went to one for my cousin. Basically, it was a card only gift thing (meaning that there was no gifts or $$ given) and it was a time for the two families to get to know one another. We just had a cookout at my grandma's house with our family and hers and just ate and talked. It was really informal, but a lot of fun!

We're using it as kind of a median to announce our engagement to same family members that may not as close...
We're just hoping to have a good time and have a party with some friends and family. We'll try to have it no gifts or money as well...
My one word of advice is jsut to make sure that everyone you invite to your engagement party will be on your guest list too...when people get an invite to one it's like an automatic invite to the wedding too

I just went to one today for one of my childhood friends. There werent very many people there but it was really nice. I thought of it a lot like a cocktail party (with or without alcohol). They used it as a medium to introduce everyone to her fiance and announce their engagement.
My engagment party was a little more formal... There were about 50 - 60 people there (family and friends). We had it later in the evening and served a lot of food... definitely like when you go to someone's party and you make dinner out of it... check my journal for a menu of what was served. We also had a huge cake and lots of alcohol. It was not so much for us to announce our engagement because we had been engaged for 9 months already... This was simply a celebration for us and an excuse to PARTY! :holiday:

We never had one. But, it does give an opportunity for both sides of the family to get together and meet if that hasn't been done yet. Most of it is your guests bring cards sometimes gifts. Just make sure to get your thank you's out shortly afterwards. Most of the engagement parties I have been to have been small family type gatherings with close friends. Mostly hor dorves and sometimes even cake. Nothing fancy just casual, laid back and relaxed. Hope this helps!

Thanks everyone, for all the input! Sorry I took so long to get back here. My mom and sister are hosting it at a pretty nice pizza place, in a seperate room the have for private parties. it will just be a few friends, family, and the bridal party. Everyone invited is totally invited to the wedding, so no worries there. Mmmm, cake! I think we'll have a blast, and I really appreciate everyone's info! I am so excited!

We ddn't have an engagment party but we are having a bridal party party and everyone will be bringing their significant other and the families will be there and so on, so it'll sort of be like an engagment party I guess lol. Plus we're seeing it as the kick off to our wedding planning (a little late but whatever).
I've been to engagment parties in the past but they were a lot different from one to the next. Some were liek a little party with friends where as others were a large gathering.
