MIDDLEBURG — Florida Circuit Court Judge Larry Seidlin seemed to bask in the limelight as he oversaw the Anna Nicole Smith case last week, but the Middleburg homeowner apparently feels equally at home in rural central Pennsylvania.
The judge, who wept while delivering his ruling on who would get custody of the late Playboy pinup's remains, bought a Victorian house in downtown Middleburg with his in-laws in 2004 and has been renovating it for the past two years, said his sister-in-law, Valrie Kunes.
"He vacations here about three times a year. He loves it here," said Mrs. Kunes, a photographer who lives in Globes Mills with her husband, Steven.
She said the Judge Seidlin, watched by millions as he presided over the sometimes bizarre Smith case last week, is no different than the man she has known for years.
"Larry's Larry," Mrs. Kunes said. "I think he represents people. He can talk to anyone. People are drawn to him."
Despite reports that the 56-year-old admittedly "eccentric" judge might get an offer to host his own "Judge Judy"-style television show, his sister-in-law doubts he would jump at the chance.
"I don't think he'd be interested," Mrs. Kunes said.
A native of the Bronx, Judge Seidlin has lived in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for several years; and that's where he met his wife, Brenda, a life-long Florida resident and Mrs. Kunes' sister.
He's been restoring the old house at 116 W. Market St. since buying it a little more than two years ago, hiring local contractors and purchasing furniture from local stores.
Mrs. Kunes operates one of her two photography studios in the house, and her oldest daughter also lives there.
She said her brother-in-law enjoys the small-town pace. He likes speaking to everyone he meets, she said.
"I've lived here since 1989, and Larry probably knows more people than me," she said. "He rides his bike and jogs through town. It's a nice place to raise kids."
The Seidlins' 6-year-old daughter, Dax, named after the judge's grandfather, likes to walk to a nearby park and fish with her uncle, Mrs. Kunes said.
"When all this settles down, they'll be back," she said.
