I'm engaged and we were thinking of doing a civil wedding first b/c he's military and we want to have a big wedding where I grew up but we wont be moving there till may06 and we wanted to get married nov06 but think it may not be enough time to plan with moving in and getting settled and stuff. so we thought of maybe going civil in jan06 and then getting married in a big church wedding in early 07 but i'm not sure if I'll be as excited or if it will be as special once 2007 comes around b/c by then we'd be married a year. if anyone has been married civil and then had a big wedding pls let me know if it affected your way of feeling towards it in a good way or bad...this is my first time getting married and i want it to be special.... thank you .lexy :?

I know this is kind of an old post but here are my thoughts ...
I think that in many cases like this a 'big wedding' is just for show and usually more for the family than the couple. If you guys want to get married sooner and you don't have the money right now then go for the civil ceremony. If you want the big church wedding in your home town then save money and wait to do that. If your FH is getting called to duty somewhere then that is a different story and I could see why you'd want to get married right away and have a 'wedding' later.
One of my good friends got married at the JOP because they didn't have alot of money and they didn't have family that was helping ... but they wanted to be married. They saved money and had a very nice reception/party on their 1st anniversary. They have been married 4 years now and haven't regretted a thing.
I know of a few other people that spend lots and lots of money on the wedding and are divorced now. I think that it is not about the "Wedding" but rather about the "Marriage" ya know what I mean?
Whatever you decide to do, I say do what makes you and your FH happy and do what you can afford ... either way you go you will be married :D
Your wedding will be special because you are marrying this person that you love with all your heart and that day is the first day of a wonderful new life together, no matter how you do it or how much you spend on the day.
Best wishes,
