I need some help from you ladies that are computer smarter than I am (which would be most of you!!) I'm trying to finish my invites. I want to put a pic of us on vellum over the top of the actual invite. But, I can't make it print light enough to see through. Does any of this make sense? How can I make it look just barely there? Is there a trick to this? Thank you so much for any help you can be!!

I will try to help :) First, which photo software are you using? You should be able to set the transparency by percentage (you might have to play around with it a bit to get the right degree of transparancy).

But if you havent made these already - might I make a suggestion? Since your picture will take up much more space than just printing, it might be better to put your picture on the back page (where you have the actual invite now) and put the printed information on the velum. That way you can easily read the information, but still see your picture in the background (and you wouldnt have to print your picture so transparent then.) The way you are doing it is fine too, people can just flip up the velum, but the other way you would get a nice effect without flipping the page. Good luck!

Oh, man...wish I had asked you first. I already have the main part of the invites done. I was just waiting on the pics. That's all I have left to add. I might just skip it if I can't make it work.

The program I am using is whatever is on my HP computer. It's just under "my pictures", then "print this pic", etc. Thanks so much for your help. I'll see what I can find. Thank you again.

No, no - its going to be BEAUTIFUL just as you described! (was just giving some options - just in case).

But when you go to print the picture, there should be some options that allow you to adjust the picture a bit. When you open the program do you see a toolbar that has 'Image'? When you pull down the options there should be a color adjustment or saturation adjustment, or allows you to make a watermark - something like that. (I have quite a few different programs - so if you can find out what you are using I should be able to give you more detailed instructions!) :D You can also check in your printer preferences for the amount of ink to use, some are automatically set to different kinds of paper, and some are controlled by percentages of ink. I dont mean to make it more complicated than need be, just some things to consider.

I really appreciate your help. After your suggestion, I was just thinking that what you said would have been easier.

The program is called Photo Printing Wizzard. My computer is a Hewlet Packard...so I know it has some weird programs. When you go to print, it shows that you can pick the kind of paper, so I picked transparency, then it goes to advance and it has color tone...which can be normal, warm, warmer, cool, or cooler. It has brightness, which has normal, dark, darker, light or lighter. It has intensity which has normal, dark, darker, light, or lighter. It has saturation, which has vibrant, vivid, normal, muted, and dull. It also has ink volume which has heavier, heavy, normal, light, and lighter. Does any of this make sense?

Thanks again for all your help.

Darn - unfortunately, I don't know that particular program, but you have given great information, so I think the first thing I would try is to set the saturation on muted, and ink volume on lighter (having picked transparency as the paper). You might have to play with the other ones - I think maybe brightness to light, and perhaps intensity to light. It kind of depends on what you want your final image to be as well. Sorry I can't be more help - but perhaps someone else is more familiar with your program. Its just a sort of trial and error effort! :)

I actually was going to suggest that you make the photo printed behind the vellum and then put the wording on the vellum

That's exactly what we're doing for our invites.
Here's a pic...

The way we see it, they can actually keep the pic of us (which will be one of our engagment pics) and toss the vellum if they want to.

So, if I print the pics on the paper, and the invite on the vellum...do I print the pics on picture paper or just regular paper. I'm thinking that way is more doable. I can't make the pic come out on the vellum light enough to see through, no matter what I do.

PS. Thank you so much for all the suggestions. I really appreciate it.

I would use picture paper Ger, and as someone said, your guest will then have a lovely picture of the two of you! :D

I wanted to post this image for you. When I was looking for a way to design my programs, I thought that this was stunning! And it is basically just what you are wanting to do. It has the text printed on the paper behind the image, while the image is printed on the vellum.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g232/twigler/RexcraftPictureInvite2.jpg

I am not sure what you are trying as far as getting the image lighter or what your program is capable of doing, but try messing with the brightness and contrast. That will make the image look more faded. What color is the text? If it is colored, then just use a black and white image. That will make the text show a little better through the vellum.

This may be a little wierd, but I have photoshop CS2 (Graphic Design is my major), so if you wanted to try, you could send me the image through e-mail, and I could lighten it for you if you wanted! It is super easy in photoshop!

Also keep in mind that there are different thicknesses of vellum. Maybe the paper you are trying is too heavy of weight. I hope this helps a little.

Thank you so much for your help. I decided to go ahead and reprint things and put the picture in the back and print the invite on the vellum. It looks really neat and as soon as I'm done, I will print a pic of my invites. Thanks again for all your help, Ladies. I truely appreciate it.

OK, Ladies...here they are. Please, Please give me honest opinions. I wanted to put a map in it too, but can't figure out how to get that done. So, for now...this is what I'm doing. Bruce thinks they're cool!!

Here is the entire invite..the flap on the side doesn't show up.

My honest opinion...I LOVE THEM!!

I think you did a really great job! Did you make the folders and everything? This is what I am doing for mine, so it will look a lot like yours (well, with the folder part anyways):

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g232/twigler/designalone.jpg

Any tips for me (with folding, glueing, etc?? I hope mine turn out as good as yours!

I used a "bone folder" to fold them. I used a rubber spatula to make the straight edge..I know that sounds weird, but the handle is long and straight. A ruler would work too, I just didn't have one! LOL

Somewhere I had read to use double stick tape and an iron to make the fold stick together...and it sure seems to work. I didn't try anything else. It sounded like this other person had tried several other things that didn't work.

Otherwise, the only advice I have is start early and leave yourself plenty of time...because they do take time. Let me know if you have any other questions. I'll sure try to answer them.

Those are all beautiful ladies. What did you kind of paper did you use for all of the different aspects of the invitations? (folder, vellum thickness, picture, rsvp paper?)

ger

I used regular cardstock for the folder and the inserts. I used whatever vellum my scrapbooking store had...I didn't even know there were different weights...sorry!! I also used regular HP photo paper, glossy. Hope that helps. Let me know about any other questions you may have.

It surely worked better after I took these fine ladies advice and printed the invite on the vellum. It was NOT working to print the pic on the invite. It was way too dark.

Thank you! I am using cover stock paper for the folders (80#) as well as for the inserts. The cover stock is a red (called Poppy) and sivler "crushed leaf sparkle" paper. I am printing the actual text of the invite on vellum, and I think it is 110# which is really heavy and thick. I can check tomorrow to make sure if you want. If you are wanting a photo or text to be seen behind the vellum, I would use anywhere from 20# to 60# paper, otherwise the image won't be as visible. It depends on what your printer can handle also. I hope this helps!

It was a lot easier than I thought it would be...but also more time consuming. I have made another version for the people that are invited only to the reception. I'll post a pic when I get home. Thank you for all the compliments. Hopefully the people I send them to will think they are nice, too.
