I have worked as a personal trainer and have a lot of interest in the topic. I also love working out and do so quite religiously. So go ahead and ask me anything! :)

So you are studying personal training online? Congrats!

I would think you would be very qualified, what most gyms look for is certification from one of the big exercise organizations. Two of the most well known ones in the US are ACE, The American Council on Exercise and AFAA Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. You can take certification exams through these organizations.

It all depends on how big you want your practice to get and how you want to establish clients. If you know some people who are interested then that is a good start and hopefully they would refer others to you. You may also want to think about some sort of advertising. Do you have some sort of workout equipment? Also make sure you have insurance or make sure your homeowners insurance would cover a personal training business. You should also be CPR certified, which is a prerequisite for a personal trainer certification through ACE or AFAA.

No, you are not asking too many questions, I love to help when I can! Actually, if you have free weights you are in good shape. Those are the main staple. As your business grows it wouldn't hurt to add to it, but it is possible to get great workouts with just some weights and the use of their body (like push ups or yoga poses). A step aerobics step and a fitness ball are also highly useful, versatile and relatively inexpensive.

If you go to their house they may have a home gym or some sort of equipment and they call you b/c they don't really know how to maximize it's use or would like you to keep them motivated. If they don't have their own equip. then you will have to bring it.

Do you mean skin fold calipers? That would be really nice to have for measuring the clients progress, since the scale doesn't always tell the whole story esp. if one starts weight training.

I found one site here: http://www.morleyathletic.com/equipment/electronics/scales/skin-fold-calipers.htm

You can just google 'skin fold calipers' to compare prices. I have not really stayed up on the electronic ones, when I was certified the manual calipers were considered the best way to calculate percent body fat (most accurate and cost effective).
