Have you ever been guilty of looking at others your own age and thinking, "Surely I can't look that old?" well ... you'll love this one!
I was sitting in the waiting room for my first appointment with a new dentist. I noticed his DDS diploma, which bore his full name. Suddenly, I remembered a tall, handsome, dark-haired boy with the same name had been in my high school class some 40-odd years ago. Could he be the same guy that I had a secret crush on, way back then?
Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such thought. This balding, gray-haired man with the deeply lined face was way too old to have been my classmate.
Hmmm ...or could he?
After he examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended Morgan Park high school.
"Yes. Yes, I did. I had a Mustang," he gleamed with pride.
"When did you graduate?" I asked.
He answered, "In 1969. Why do you ask?"
"You were in my class!" I exclaimed.
He looked at me closely.
Then, that ugly, old, wrinkled son-of-a-b---- asked ...........
"What did you teach?"

Not exactly ... but when I was in college (****, I couldn't have been more than 22) I was sitting at the back of the bus and I stood up from the seat to make my way to the front of the bus, to get off. One young man (16 or 17) said to his friend .... "Move over so that the LADY can get out" LOL Lady, I thought???!!!! I am barely older than you!
I remember that being the first time that I was ever made to feel old. Now it just bugs me whenever someone says "Thank you, mam". I am not a mam. Older people are mams .... just say thank you please.

That was hilarious. I loved it. Once a few years ago (this was the first time I was made to feel old) my mother, sister and daughter and I were in the mall shopping. I was trying to find some certain kind of houseshoes. I asked this man (who looked to be about 21). I described them to him and he looked me right in the face and said "oh the old lady grandma type". My mother burst out laughing and needless to say he lost a sale.

I have been called mam before, the first time was a bit of a shock, but I think it's more a sign of respect (at least that is what I tell myself LOL).

He is not the brightest light in the harbor, is he? LOL

okay, two nights ago I was asked if I wanted to join the "red hat society" at my age!!!!!
She said younger women Join and become a "lady in waiting". Instead of wearing red and purple i would wear pink and purple. How embarrassing!!!
I told her (a very cute old lady) "what would I be waiting for...to get old?!?!"
She laughed and said "yea pretty much" hahahahahahha
So, just count your blessings that you haven't been asked to become a member for the red hat society!

Just how old do you have to be to wear the red hat? I am afraid that I might just qualify .... LOL

Elizabeth- no red hat for you!!! You are not old enough!!!
I have a friend that is a red hat and she is 50. I always tell her she's too young to hang out with those old ladies! Every time I see them they're always a bunch of 70+, not younger.

Maybe so but we don't use the "Yes, Mam. No, Mam" as much as perhaps some others. It was always "Yes, Mother. Right away Grandma" lol in my house. We were also taught to address "older" friends of the family, our friend's parents or neighbours as Mr. & Mrs.
I have to giggle because my children's friends never quite knew how to address me. They seemed nervous to call me by my first name (and rightly so - I don't think that is respectful unless I have asked them to use it) but they never knew if they should use my ex's last name or my maiden name.
I have yet to meet up with any of their friends since I have remarried .... it will be interesting to see what they choose now. LOL

This reminds me of my grandfather still to this day when he introduces me to someone it is always Mr. or Mrs. Blank and that is what I have to call them, even if the person insists on me calling them by thier first name. LOL so if grandpa is present I call them Mr. or Mrs. Blank to be respectful to him..
The joke was great thanks for sharing.

I think it is a sign of respect. I work in customer service and I usually call women ma'am, and I usually don't pay any attention to the age of the person. I am just trying to be polite, I guess. However, at 22, I don't like to be called ma'am lol!!
That joke was so funny! I think am going email it some people!

That was funny, but I would have been a bit offended if something like that really happened :frogg:
I have been called ma'am alot, it doesn't really bother me unless it is being said sarcastically :snide:
I got a Red Hat post card a while back, I don't know how they got my address, but I am only 33. DH got something from the AARP and he is only 33 as well :purplex:

So do I .... hmmm I tend to say .... "Certainly Mr. Smith" or "Of course Mrs. Smith" rather than yes mam or no mam. Funny, it really might be a geographic thing.
