I'm getting carried away with this posting messages thing but anyways, I wanted to do my own flowers because I figure all I need is bouquets and boutinneres. Has anyone else conquered this feat? I'd like to do Gerbera daisies maybe with something else as a fill...Any suggestions?

I haven't done it yet... but my FSL who got married a couple years ago did her own flowers. There are books out there on doing your own flower centre peices and boquets. You can get floral wire which is kinda like twist ties (thats what i think of when i see it).
We were thinking we would get those itty bitty clear elastics that you can use for your hair. Wrap one closer to the top and one at the bottem then wrap ribbon arround the steams of the flowers to hide them. We also thought it would work well for bundeling the flowers in the centre peices.
Just make sure you don't wrap the stems too tightly.

I am only ordering bouquets and boutenieres through my florist and then I'm personally doing the decorations for the reception hall. The florist bill is less than $250 so it's not a big budget stretcher...

i'm doing my own flowers, using white gerberas and red roses, ivy as the fill... the trick is to go simple! the classyist (i don't think thats a word, but hey :D ) arrangements, are the simple ones! you'd be surprised at how effective just a few flowers tied together with some ribbon can be! even centrepieces can be made simple! depending on the time of day for the wed there are many different ways to do your flowers... candles, vases, boxes, buckets, wire, branches, that green hard stuff florists use... let me know and i can give you some suggestions... :D

well I think I want to just do daisies...I found a bouquet I like but I don't know how to post a message with a picture!! Then I thougth the bridesmaids would just have a few daisies tied together with a ribbon and a simple daisy and something else as a bouteniere. If I decide to go to a florist is it too late? My wedding is May 13, 2006. My colors are Burnt orange and lilac. I'm certain on the orange undecided on the lilac!

it shouldn't be too late to go to a florist... i would suggest going to a few local ones and see wot they can do, so you can compare pricing etc. you could probably do the bmaids bouquets yourself - or task the moh to do them. if you're undecided bout the colours, go to a paint store and get those sample paint colour chart things... you can mix and match and see which ones work best together... i think that orange and lilac could look nice since they're opposite on the colour wheel.... you still have some time so play around a bit :)

i'm not really clued up on the whole fake flower thing, but wouldn't they be just as expensive as the real thing? maybe do a test run... so do 2 centrepieces, one real and one fake, then see which one you like best...

For the most part, fake flowers are just as expensive as the real thing, with the supplies and everything. However, if you do your own flowers, you know, for a fact, that you are getting exactly what you want. AND you don't have to pay to have your wedding bouquet around forever! It's entirely up to you.

:) i was wondering wot happens to all the fake flowers after the day? i actually don't know anyone whose gone that route... i just feel that real flowers look nicer and smell pretty and fresh... wots everyone else doing for flowers?

I'm getting real flowers for all the bouquets and boutenierres, but I'm goign to do my own decorating at the reception, so I'm getting fake flowers for that. I read somewhere a suggestion to donate your flowers, real or fake, to an old folks home. They tend to get funeral flowers, which are kind of a downer, and from what the book said, the wedding flowers are much more readily accepted. I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do with some of my arrangements...I'll probably keep some.

most of the weds i've been to usually donate the flowers. i went to one where the table decor were these little vases with a single roses in... there was one at each setting and the guests took them as favours, i thought that was a cute and original idea...

Most weddings that I've heard of just let everyone take the centerpeices home if they want. I don't know, though. If we do candles, everyone better keep their paws off!! They're MINE!!

lol...I'm the same way. I want to keep not only the candles (because I love candles) but also the glasses...having 40 glasses is handy for parties and extras and big holiday functions (which I plan on hosting in our beautiful new home...whenever we get one). The rest of my flowers are still under debate as to where they will end up after the wedding. I really would like to have my bouquet (which will be real) freeze-dried. I love those domes they have to put flowers in. Ok, so I don't throw anything away...lol.

lol! me neither! my fh already told me to be selective bout wot i want to keep cos otherwise i'd just keep evrything! My mom bought me this really nice big box to keep all the wedding memories in... she's already started by putting pics in of our engagement, samples of ribbon and paper from when we were trying to work out colours and all the details of wedding vendors we'll be using... It'll be nice to add to it with stuff from the day and honeymoon. One day my kids (when we have them) will get to look thru it ....

After the wedding, in order to get over the misery of not having anything to plan anymore, I'm going to put together a wedding album...I ABSOLUTELY LOVE to scrapbook. I'm saving everything I can lately...pictures, ribbons, fabric...I'll probably press some flowers and some other things to put in it as well. I wish I had bought the book I found a few months ago at Target...I really liked it but didn't have the extra money to spend and now it's not there...:(
Oh well, I'll find something.

I'm having ambience roses (yellow with rich wine colored tips) in full blossom. That's all so far, although, because I'm wearing pearls, we've talked about putting a few pearls in here and there. It will be hand tied, 18 of them, and tied with left over scrap from my dress.
