Well, Elias had a great Birthday. He got all kinds of toys, some really cool clothes, a new guitar, and a PUPPY!!!

Her name is Nova, she's 7 Weeks Old, Lab/Shar Pei Mix. Super sweet.

Just wanted to share!

ETA: Her name is Hopi for "Butterfly Chaser". It's such a sweet name, and it's so in tune with her playful personality.

Thanks! Carlo wanted something "Native American" and I wanted something that was unique and pronouncable. So, that was perfect!

Elias sure is getting big ;)

Cute pup, I like the name too. She looks like she will be a big girl though. It is good that she and Elias will grow up together. I'm sure they will teach each other things and take care of each other. So I hope you and Carlo will be able to take good care of her too ;)

Having a dog is like having a kid in many ways, they need more than just love and food. They need proper health care (spay/neuter, shots, etc) too! Sorry, I just got off another board talking about irresponsible pet owners, the people that just get dogs because they are cute and never take them to the vet. Ugh, my mom is one of those people.

Ok, I'll stop now ... glad Elias had a good birthday!!

Yeah, Brandi. That's one thing that gets to me too. We got her for free outside Sprawl-Mart.

These puppies already had a checkup and shots when she was giving them away. She took down my address and she's sending me a voucher to get her spayed for free. We just de-wormed her, and in a week she's going back in for her next checkup.

Elias just loves playing with her!!!!!!

Thanks everyone! She's sitting with me right now. She's so sweet.. My Dad doesn't want us to keep her. He's being a real jerk about it.. But I don't think I can take away Elias's birthday present and Murray's new friend. He says that an indoor dog and a cat are too much for one house.

I don't think so!:snide:

He thinks that she's going to be too big, and since we live in a house that they own, he thinks that he can call the shots.

Unfortuantely, in a way, dad can call the shots. Been there done that. We just kept our cat a secret. I ended up having to give the cat away any how! lol.

Very cute BTW!!

I would guess that your dad is just worried about the dog tearing up the house (which even a small dog can do btw) he may have a point. But if you are living there, 'renting' from him or not, you will be responsible for whatever damage she might cause. Maybe you can offer to sign something to that effect, if he continues to throw a fit.

But if you guys train the dog well, keep her crated or confined when you are not home or not paying attention to her, and give her plenty of outdoor exercise she should be fine.

Good luck!

Good thinking Brandi!! Maybe offer him a security deposit on the dog, thats what we had to do for our cats, we also pay a little extra each month for rent. I hope you can keep her she is so cute!!!

Awww she's such a sweetie and I love her name. How big is she going to get? Lab sized or Shar Pei sized?

I don't know how big she's going to get. I know my Dad can call the shots.. But I just think he's doing it to be a controlling meanie. He's not doing it out of genuine concern.. It's because we "didn't ask him first".. He's also making it out to be that my Step-Mom is super against the dog too. She isn't.

My dad is just a jerk.

It is usually hard to tell how big a mixed breed puppy will get. One would guess somewhere in between the size of the parents. Female dogs are generally smaller than males, but you just never know.

It may be that your dad is sort of just 'throwing his weight around' but maybe you should have mentioned it to him. I mean if I was renting a house to someone in my family and they got a big dog without telling me I might be a little miffed too (just a thought) You know how family tends to screw you over more than friends sometimes ... maybe your dad thinks you will let the dog tear up something and leave the house in bad shape and he will have to deal with it.

I had a dog in an apartment once that I wasn't suppose to have, I just didn't tell them. They did find out and I got fined and later had to give the dog away. So I guess if you kept the dog a secret it would have been just as hard.

Like I said before, maybe you can talk to your dad and tell me you will take full responsibility for the dog. I dunno, I'm just typing out loud here ... I hope it all works out for you.

:goodluck:

Well, getting the dog was sort of a spurt of the moment thing. We saw the puppies (which were free, with shots and spay, all free) and just took one. My dad just started being a real a-hole at Elias's party, and it just got to me.

We're considering giving her away, because the more we think about it, the more of an inconvenience and burden she is going to be. We might get a dog later on, when Elias is older. A dog who is already trained, full grown, and healthy.

Thanks Brandi, I see his side of it.. He's just being really immature about it.

Raising and training a dog with a toddler is a big job, and a dog that size might make it a bit harder.

I tell ya, I love both my dogs, but after going through all the crazy puppy stuff with Roxy, I will never have a puppy again! We got Enzo at 9 mos old and other than him being a little shy, he has been the best dog ever!

Think about it for a couple of days and weigh all the pros and cons of the whole situation and do what you feel is best for your family and the dog.

If you decide to give Nova away, I hope you will look for a local animal rescue or a good home for her. You can also look to a local rescue to find the right dog for you later.

Good luck in whatever you decide ... and with your dad!

Well, I went ahead and put a free ad in the paper for the dog. I'm only going to give her to someone who is willing to keep her indoors at night and in bad weather and get her spayed with our voucher.

She's a sweet little pup, though.. It makes me sad to see her go!

Well you are doing what you feel is best for you and your family. And kudos to you for making sure to find her a good home.

Yeah. It really stinks.. I see Elias hug or kiss her and my heart totally breaks.

On the other hand, we still have Murray! We'll get another dog in a few years.
