Every time I go to get my hair cut the stylist tells me that my hair looks like I swim a lot. Now in the summer I do, but not in the winter. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any inexpensive shampoo to help me deal with my swimmer's hair. My stylist always suggests expensive stuff, and I really don't want to spend a ton on shampoo. Thanks for the help!

I use Aussie Mega moisturizing (big purple bottle)...it has just enough conditioning ingredients in it to soften it but not over condition it and make it all limp.
My hubby uses Suave....but then he doesn't get perms, use blowdryers or products lol!

There is some stuff for swimmers hair, I just can't remember the name of it. I find it at most drugs store. It's not too expensive but it may be what you need. I use to have to use it when iwas on the swim team in high school and it kept my hair from going green and it was nicely moisturized. Just check at your local drug store and see if they might have something. I really wish I could remember the name of the stuff. Sorry!

I use Suave too, the salon line that is similar to Nexxus therapy shampoo. I think it is called Suave Professionals.
ETA - Swimmers hair is typically dry and lack luster (sometimes with a green tint from the chlorine) so what you probably need is a moisturizing, shine boosting shampoo. Good luck :)

See that's one thing I never undertood. I am told I have swimmers hair, but my hair tends to be greasy. If I do not wash it EVERY day it looks so oily.
I made an appointment to get my hair trimmed on Tuesday, so maybe I'll just buy a bottle of the expensive stuff just to see if it works for me.

A hairdresser once told me any brand of shampoo that specifically says CLARIFYING will work for swimmers hair. They also sell "ultra swim" at drugstores pretty cheap I think.

The good thing about expenisve stuff IMO is that it seems to last longer and go a longer distance then the cheap stuff like Herbal Essences and such. I usually rip thorugh a bottle of herbal essences in a week but the good salon stuff sometimes lasts me up to a month!

You should check out the Panetene ProV stuff. They have a moisturizing shampoo as well as a clarifying one. It works great on my hair, especially during the summer.

I have to agree with Elizabeth I also use pantene pro v. My FH is a painter and he has rather long hair and it keeps his looking great. Also I have him use a leave in conditioner called infusium 23.

IMO, the salon products are so worth the money. Think about it, if your hair is medium length or longer the ends of your hair can be 6-12 months old or more and hair is dead tissue, so pretty much once it is damaged it is really hard to reverse. The chlorine damage may still be in your hair even months later.
But, if you cannot afford salon products (as food will always be more important than shampoo and conditioner) I would tell my stylist just that and see if s/he could suggest a good store brand. Also look into a good detoxifier to get out any residual chlorine, you could even as your stylist to that while in the salon. I know Aveda makes a great detox.
Here are some other hair care tips I always follow:
When you do go swimming at the very least wet your hair completely with fresh water and try to comb through some conditioner through it, don't rinse the conditioner out. This will prevent a lot of the chlorine from penetrating your hair.
When I apply conditioner I get out of the shower, towel dry my hair as much as possible, apply the conditioner, comb it through the hair and then put my hair up and continue with the shower, rinsing my hair last as to give the cond. as much time to soak in as possible. When you do rinse do so with the coldest water you can stand for about 10 seconds. That will close the cuticle of the hair making it smoother.
If at all possible try only washing your hair every other day at the most, I generally go 3 days. The natural oils you create are very good for your hair's health and your scalp may make more oil if you wash too frequently. Get a good brush and try to work the natural oils down the hair shaft. I will also wet my hair, but skip the shampoo and just condition esp. the ends on the day you don't wash your hair.
When you wash your hair, keep most of the shampoo at the roots as the run off when you rinse is generally enough to clean the ends.
Try to let your hair air dry as much as possible, maybe start showering in the evenings so you don't have to use a blow dryer as often. When you do blow dry, let your hair air dry for the first 15 - 20 mins while you do other things.
Also, look into a leave in conditioner.

Thanks for all the suggestions ladies! I'm going to talk to the haidresser Tuesday and see what she says. I haven't tried Panetene yet. So if the stuff she suggests is too expensive i'll check it out.
Melissa, thanks for all the tips. I did find my hair looks better the more I air dry it. I wil have to try some leave in conditioner. With the fact that my hair can be so greasy some days, I try to shampoo it often and normally stay away from conditioner. I'll give that a try though.
Thanks again everyone!

I have the same problem with the greases at times. I found that if I don't apply alot of conditioner to the scalp of my head it doesn't happen also with the leave in conditioner I only apply to the ends and the sides of my hair. pantene has never left my hair greasy.

I use the Sunsilk line (I use whatever it is thats in the pink bottle) but they have a bunch of different formulas for different hair problems. I think mine must be for dry/damaged hair but it works great, IMO. Its my favorite shampoo so far and I've tried a ton of different kinds. Everytime I go to get my hair cut, the stylist always tells me my hair is very healthy...but I have a problem with it getting dry and brittle easily.

I love pantene. But when I want to really condition my hair I use neutrogena. What I do is wash my hair, then I put it in and leave it in for about an hour. I do my stuff around the hosue, then I get back in the shower and leave it out. It really gives it some "umph" again. lol

I use Suave Professionals Moisturizing. Wash at the scalp. condition the ends. ( My hair is very long, what is it with men and long hair?) My stylist told me the only difference in the shampoos and conditioners I tried was the price. I used to wash my hair every day, as I also have the greasy thing going on, but the rest of it does much better with a two to three day schedule, and I just put it in a ponytail or under a headband (at my age!) and noone knows any better.

any type of clarifying poo will do. I use Suave and Nexxus clarifying, but if your hair feels dry after clarifying, then go with a moisturizig or hydrating poo once like herbal essence or nexxus. I love nexxus products.
