We decided to only have a small family gathering for our first Thanksgiving. It is only going to be us (the five) and DH's brother and his wife. We figured since I will be working by then that we would go small then at christmas do it differently.

Big family gathering for me! We always have everyone get together for Thanksgiving and then we do our immediate family for Christmas!

If it was up to my FH we'd be staying home and eating anything but turkey. He won't eat it and hates Thanksgiving.
BUT we are going to spend the holiday anyway with both families. We're going to my parents in the early afternoon and then to his family in the evening.

I'm not big into turkey either, but I like the other stuff!

A few people are coming over to our house this year. We were going to have my sister and her husband and son, but due to financial restraints, they're not going to be able to attend. And, we don't want to do the traveling cause in the past, we've always been the ones traveling. So, it's going to be me, DH and my BiL and possibly a friend or two. Nice, quiet, and relaxed, with delicious food.

We are having a small family gathering. We do dinner on 'Thanksgiving eve' at my parents house, then Thanksgiving some of DH's family comes to our house. I usually cook at least something for both.

Then on Saturday we are going back to my parents house for an hors d'ourves kind of thing and putting up the Christmas tree with my sister.

We're doing the Big Family thing. Jonathan and I are going to have Thanksgiving at noon at his parents house and then at 5pm at my aunt's house. I'm excited that we can balance the two families on major holidays.

I don't celebrate the American Thanksgiving. But... We had 2 small family get togethers for the Canadian Thanksgiving. One night we went to Mark's mothers and the holiday monday we went to my mothers. It was great. But really hard on me since i wasn't feeling so great this past year.

Just curious as to what the Canadian Thanksgiving is based on. Like ours is giving thanks for your blessings of the past year (or whatever you want to be thankful for). Here is the history of the American Thanksgiving. What is the history of the Canadian Thanksgiving?
The Pilgrims set ground at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620. Their first winter was devastating. At the beginning of the following fall, they had lost 46 of the original 102 who sailed on the Mayflower. But the harvest of 1621 was a bountiful one. And the remaining colonists decided to celebrate with a feast -- including 91 Indians who had helped the Pilgrims survive their first year. It is believed that the Pilgrims would not have made it through the year without the help of the natives. The feast was more of a traditional English harvest festival than a true "thanksgiving" observance. It lasted three days.
This "thanksgiving" feast was not repeated the following year. But in 1623, during a severe drought, the pilgrims gathered in a prayer service, praying for rain. When a long, steady rain followed the very next day, Governor Bradford proclaimed another day of Thanksgiving, again inviting their Indian friends. It wasn't until June of 1676 that another Day of Thanksgiving was proclaimed.
http://wilstar.com/images/turkey.gif October of 1777 marked the first time that all 13 colonies joined in a thanksgiving celebration. It also commemorated the patriotic victory over the British at Saratoga. But it was a one-time affair.
George Washington proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789, although some were opposed to it. There was discord among the colonies, many feeling the hardships of a few Pilgrims did not warrant a national holiday. And later, President Thomas Jefferson scoffed at the idea of having a day of thanksgiving.
It was Sarah Josepha Hale, a magazine editor, whose efforts eventually led to what we recognize as Thanksgiving. Hale wrote many editorials championing her cause in her Boston Ladies' Magazine, and later, in Godey's Lady's Book. Finally, after a 40-year campaign of writing editorials and letters to governors and presidents, Hale's obsession became a reality when, in 1863, President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a national day of Thanksgiving.

This year it will be just my husband and I. The kids go to their dads every year. Last year we had our meal the day after so we could have it with the kids. But this year they will be at their dads all weekend. But I am very willing to giv eup my Thanksgiving with the kids to have them for Christmas each year.

I voted for a big family dinner. Since FH's gma had a dinner, and we usually have a dinner too, we'll go to one place for dinner and then go to the other for a small thing later. Since my gma died a couple years ago, we really haven't done anything real big.
