I went and talked to the tattoo guy (not my regular guy, but he will be collaborating with this guy on the design) and he is working on the design.
When he is done he is going to email me the sketch. The quick sketch they did while I was there was great, I can't wait to see the real thing!
If all is well I will get it next Saturday! I am so excited, I can't wait.
I decided to go with just the upper arm panel and not the full half sleeve. One side will be a bird (chickadee, for my late MIL) in a cherry blossom tree and the other will be a religious theme design. The later is sort of hard to explain ... it will have a cross with angle wings, a sacred heart and some clouds and stuff.
I hope to get both (maybe not the same day) but I am not sure what it is all gonna cost yet, so we'll see.

Maybe you could use your kids birth flowers as part of the design ... you know how each month has it's own flower? That might be cool, if you like the flower that is ;)
Or you could have something that represents each of their personality?
I am going to have two daisies (for DH and I's wedding month - April) tied together with blue ribbon (for loyalty in marriage) to sort of symbolize our marriage. I haven't decided where to put this, but I will do it probably for a\our anniversary next year.

I'm DYING to get a new tattoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was gonna get one in the fall but then I got engaged andI just don't have that spare cash to go out and get one. I have a pink shasta daisy on the top of my foot on my left side and I have an artist sketch of tinkerbell on my right ankle.
I come from an Icelandic backround and I want the "Vegvisir" which is the viking compass. the vikings would take coal and make this pattern on their heads before they went on a voyage. It was meant to bring them home safely and to never loose their way. I think the idea of never loosing your way is wonderful, plus my family tree traces back to the vikings. Just a full circle tattoo. I want it on my lower back.

Ugh, I guess I'm not getting a tattoo tomorrow *pouting*
I finally heard from the guy today, he emailed me the drawing he had been working on and it is awful. I guess the artwork itself isn't bad, but the design is not at all what I had envisioned :(
I talked to him about the changes I wanted and he said he was gonna work on it. I don't want to rush it, so I told him to take the weekend and get back to me.
He said he might be able to get to it tonight and early tomorrow, so if he can get it right by then maybe we can do it Saturday night or Monday.
I don't mind waiting, I just don't like being told I can expect something at a certain time then have it fall though with no explanation or apology.
But anyway, I am going to try not to think about it anymore and just wait to hear from him. If it isn't at least 90% right this time I am going to ask for at least half of my $100 deposit back and go somewhere else.

Aww that sucks that the design wasn't right. What a pain! But it has to be perfect cause it's there forever! Hopefully he's come up with something good and you can get it done on Monday!
Can't wait to see it!

That's what I was thinking. I'd rather have him be honest and say it's not the best and have him take it and re-do it then to have put something that didn't look quite right on my body! I'm sure he'll come through in the end Brandi!! Good luck!

OMG, I would never actually get a tattoo I didn't love ... what was she thinking!
I am just afraid my design won't be right and I'll loose money and have to go somewhere else. Oh how I wish my regular guy could have at least done the design. Well, here's hopping all turns out well ... and soon because I am impatient ;)

I got the 2nd draft drawing from the guy a little while ago and it is MUCH better! I feel better and am excited again.
We still have a few changes to make but I am confident it will be wonderful. Here is the rough sketch to give you guys an idea of what it will look like ...

It looks like it may still be Monday or Tuesday before I actually get it, but at least we are getting the design looking more like what I had in my head :)

Brandi,
So glad you are getting there! I have no tattoos, though I have wanted one for over half my life. Money has always been an issue. When I was with the ex, money was non-existant, and I refused to let the "DIYers" touch me.
Rob has many tattoos, some pro and some not. (Why do men allow this?)
Anyway, I have always known I wanted a unicorn. I am a Capricorn and the unicorn is much more my style than a goat, though stubborn is not a problem for me. Can't you tell from the avatar? But I wanted a strong one. No sissy, fairytale, pastel one for me. Now that Rob (a Leo) and I have been together for so long, it will be a lion and a unicorn. I have been gathering images from every possible source for some time. My dilemma is where to put it. It must be covered in professional life, but I would prefer visible in my personal life. Because of my large bust, skimpy clothing is out. I don't even wear tank tops on a regular basis, they don't cover my bra straps, and at 48, I was raised in an era where your "underwear" was under some other clothing. I was thinking of a small ankle/calf ( I mostly wear jeans to work) and if I don't, most people don't look down.
I am mostly indifferent to pain, ( I hate taking any meds) but is this area particularly painful or generally not so?

I know right?! LOL, my brother has some non pro tattoos. He even dabbled in it for a bit and wanted to practice on me :bbeek: No Way!

For location I would suggest either high on the calf or on your shoulder. I have been tattooed in both places and while all tattoos are uncomfortable, those places aren't too bad ... at least they weren't for me.
The worst one for me was the large one on my back (http://www.ramblingsofme.com/photogallery/mytats/my%20tatt.jpg) (it took 6 hours) Then one on my lower back (http://www.ramblingsofme.com/photogallery/mytats/my%20mods%20005.jpg) sucked a bit too. Now the cross (http://www.ramblingsofme.com/photogallery/mytats/new_tat.jpg) on my leg/calf (my second largest so far) certainly wasn't pleasant, but it wasn't as bad as the big one on my back ;)
Most of the others (I have 7 so far) weren't much pain to speak of, but I think the pain is sort of a mind over matter thing.
Aside from the artwork and the placement and all, be sure to check out the shop and the artist too! Like you said, you don't want some DIY'er to tattoo you ;)
Good luck!

I found with the tattoo that I have that it hurt more when he was working directly on my shoulder blade! That hurt like hell. I wouldn't recommend breast tattoos to anyone!! They sag and honestly aren't that attractive (IMO, sorry to anyone who has one!) and I've heard they are hella painful! I agree with Brandi, choose a meaty part of your body and get your tattoo there.
VenusElaine
11-18-2006, 10:15 PM
Well at my age, the breast is definitely out, as I am a 38-G (European) which I now understand is an "I" American. I have been ordering bras from Fantasie in England for many years because the good old USA doesn't cut it when it comes to my size (Victoria's Secret is that she is only for anorexics). Eventually I will look like Cher on her old show when she did the aging Vegas showgirl with them hanging to her knees. Mine only reach my waist without aid at this point.
My shoulder will not really show in private life, so I am leaning toward the ankle/calf. I would like to have it done before Rob and I get married, hopefully next year, and will let you all know how it turns out. I already know where. We have a local shop called "Thinkin' Ink" and I will see "Patty, Mistress of Pain". She has been profiled in many magazines stateside.
Thanks for the input.

The tattoo guy sent me the final sketch today and I LOVE it! What do you guys think?
http://tinyurl.com/y9epxn
*it will be full color of course*
He wants to add a couple more roses at the bottom, on either side of the
cross. He says it seems a little top heavy and wants to balance it out.
I don't really think it needs anything else, but I guess I will let him play with it and see what he comes up with.
I told him I was hoping it would be no more than $600 and he said he could
do that (whew, I was afraid it would end up being more). He said he would probably be ready to do it tomorrow night or Friday afternoon.
I am so excited!

I don't know what pile cream is  Every tattooist will recommend something different for the after care. I use A & D ointment for the first few days (you can take Ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory/pain med for the swelling and pain)and then a pure fragrance free lotion after that. You just want to keep it clean and moist so it heals properly.

hemorroid cream! lol I just wanted to know if anyone else was told this as i thought it was quite an odd thing to put on but its supposed to really help!
Yeah, I don't know if you should put that on a tattoo. It is pretty much an open wound and I don't see how hemorrhoid cream could be a good thing.
It doesn't swell too much, if it is uncomfortable you can take an Ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory/pain med for the swelling and pain and use a warm/cold compress.
