http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/23/23_32_12.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZNxdm824YYUS) Hi ladies, I was just wondering if anybody with kids has had the same problem as I do... My son is 8 months old Tomorrow actually, and it seems like just about every week he comes down with a cold, now asthma runs thick on both mine and Joe's sides of the family. I was talking to a girlfriend of mine at work, and she sugessted that maybe he had it.
We keep him covered at all times any time we walk out the door and it is below like 75. I have noticed lately that my dad (his babysitter) smokes while holding him, and my mom also smokes. Me and Joe smoke as well, but not in the same room he is in.
This sick every week thing is killing me. Every time I take him to the Dr. they just look at me like I'm crazy, but they never give me any solutions, so I was just hoping maybe someone knew SOMETHING!!
There has to be a nurse or someone who works in the medical field on here!
HELP!!

Well, first I would strongly suggest that you tell your Dad and your mom not to smoke anywhere near him. I would also suggest that you and Joe don't smoke in the house at all. I know that seems like a mojor pain, having to go outside every time you want a cigarette, but that way he's not breathing in any of the left over smoke. Other than that, I would suggest you keep a detailed log of his colds and coughs and when you go to the pediatrician, give him the records.

I used to have the same problems with my son when he was younger. the problem? SMoking around them. I never really made the connection until later. Once I moved out of my parents house, he was fine. their little lungs are very sensitive. My best advice is as Maria said. Ask your parents not to smoke around him. They should understand.

I worked in a hospital for a number of years and smoking is usually the culprit to this problem. If he does have asthma smoking will often times trigger an attack as well. It is definetly not good for him to be around it on a constant basis like that. I would do as Maria suggested and smoke outside.

I definitely agree with everyone else, dont let anyone smoke near your baby and if you can, try and not go near him yourself for a while after you have a cig as smoke stays in your breath for quite a while afterwards! My son has asthma, he's 6 now, Every winter he gets a cough that does n't go, he coughs mainly at night, it usually starts with a common cold and stays with him throughout, his inhalers help control it, when he was younger he had to have a little mask thing so he could take his inhaler properly! if your child has a cough thats worse at night, and wont go then i'd ask your doctor to check him for asthma!

i to smoke and it is the best not to smoke around your child. I know its easier said than done expecially if you live where I do and in the winter it gets to be around 20 below. But I have 2 children that are now going into pre-teens and both my children had chronic bronchitis and anmonia(sp) when younger all b/c me and their father smoked around them along with other family members. Once we all stopped within a couple weeks they were both better.
Sounds like the smoke is what is causing just a virual cold and really the doctors can't do anything for that. Why are you covering him up when your going out in 75 degree weather the air will probably help him bunches. Just stick a little hat and thin jacket on him. Take him outside for you walks but don't cover him up and try that. Best of luck to you.

My nephew has asthma. He is 13 months old today. When he was born he had a small whole in his lung. They repaired it, but he has been on an inhaler since he came home. They recently moved and when they left they discovered there was some mold next to his crib and in various places in the house. Since moving he doesen't need it as much.
My SiL told me that asthma can be hereditary, my BiL has bad asthma. So if i were you i would insist that the Dr. do some more tests to find out what is going on, or see another Dr. that will help you. Plus, definatly not allowing anyone to smoke arround him.
I hope you are able to get some answers soon! Take Care!

I have to agree with everyone else. Also, my son who is now three had chronic ear infections. His symptoms: no fever, runny nose, typical cold syptoms. Later I find out his father, (whom we weren't together but he had visitation with) grandmother, and most of my son's father's family all smoke around my baby. I was furious and I was a smoker. I just always smoked outside and washed my hands very well afterwards. Anyhow, has your doc checked his ears for infections...The colds can cause ear infections too and the ear infections can become chronic as in every two weeks your baby will be on antiobiotics and then tubes will need to be inserted. I hope you don't think I am critisizing because I am far from perfect ecspecially when it comes to parenting. Anyhow, it can turn into one big snowball effect all from smoking around and in the same house with a child

I too agree with everyone else. I had asthma and was sick a lot when I was younger and my parents smoked in the house. I had liquid medicine and an inhaler for most of my childhood, once I moved out of their house I have only used the inhaler a hand full of times. I definitely think the smoking has a big part in it!
