I have generally found that the best way to loose weight and keep it off is to change eating habits and exercising habits, not to go on a specific diet. I lost 10lbs in 2 months, simply by exercising 3 days per week for an hour each day, and by eating a minimum of 5 small meals a day. I didn't really change the types of foods I ate, though I did add at least a salad a day, but by eating constantly and tiny amounts, I was never really hungry, had fewer cravings, and kept my blood sugar pretty even.

Good luck, though, whatever you decide to do!!!

I have a really nice exercise bike and a little home gym, but I cant make myself get on it for some reason, I thought with the cabbage soup diet it sounds like a breeze and people lose like 10 pounds in a week!:) One big problem is cabbage makes FH very sick to his stomach just to even smell it:(

You do know cabbage causes gas? Just a thought here.

My mom has done this diet quite a few times she does loose some weight by it but usually doesn't stick with it for very long. Because she starts getting sick and tired of eating mostly cabbage soup.

What Maria said is really the only way to lose weight and keep it off.

The cabbage soup diet is a crash diet, that you could not nor would your body want you to maintain indefinitely. What happens on crash diets is you are severely cutting your calorie intake which will shed pounds, but many of those pounds end up being muscle mass.

That is the worst thing to do, b/c muscle actually burns calories all the time. Also your body will shift into starvation mode saving/storing every single calorie it can in fat tissue and will burn muscle mass to keep you alive; if the calorie deficit continues over a very long period of time, your body will burn muscle tissue from your heart before it will start on all the fat tissue available.

This is a severe drop in metabolism and you thought yours was low now, it will only get worse on crash diets. You will also uncontrollably crave sweets and fats, b/c your body literally thinks you are dying and will do anything in the name of preservation and survival.

Weight loss and maintenance is a lifestyle change obtained by cardio exercise, weight training and eating a decent number of calories from a variety of healthy foods in small meals spread throughout the day.

Don't get me wrong, there isn't anything wrong with cabbage soup, but eating that exclusively for weeks at a time is when you get into trouble. You could have cabbage soup, a slice of whole grain bread with maybe some olive oil and a glass of milk as one of your mini meals.

Also, to get and stay in shape with exercise does not mean you have to start an Olympic training program. In as little as 10,000 steps per day (even counting all the steps you walk to/from your car and around your house), 30 minutes of weight training per week, and breaking a sweat from cardio at least once a week, along with a healthy eating regimen you can make some serious accomplishments over the course of a few months.

I had a friend and her mother that tried the cabbage soup diet. It gave them horendous stomoch aches after awhile from gas pains, but it generally worked... BUT Once they decided that there is more to eating then cabbage soup all the weight plus more came back.
Basically he's what I do in a nut shell when I want to get rid of a coupel pounds... I watch what I eat, don't over eat, and a walk after dinner, and get some excersise. Going to the mall is an excellent way of getting up and doign something. It's perfect because you don't realize how far your walking. Just leave the credit card and moola at home lol

Cabbage soup alone would also be nearly impossible to digest as healthy fats and grains (and water) are necessary for the digestion process.

but it generally worked... BUT Once they decided that there is more to eating then cabbage soup all the weight plus more came back.

That is what I was talking about. Their bodies literally thought there was a shortage of food and they might die from starvation. So the body will lower the metabolism, basically shutting down things that are not necessary for survival (like the overall output of energy or hair growth for example) and gets rid of muscle tissue (which weighs more than fat, so you will see the difference reflected on the scale, but you aren't doing yourself any good in the long run). Then when it does start to get some food, it will store everything it can as fat, just in case more shortages are in the future.

It's kind of like if you lost your job. Most people would quit spending money except what would be necessary for bills and food. Even when you found another decent paying job, you would immediately replenish your savings and most likely save even more, just in case you were out of work again.

This is what I'm doing too. I have been trying to work out a couple times a week and just eat better. We also go for walks just about every night after FH gets home from work.

I knew someone that tried the cabbage soup diet and it worked for about a day. She was too hungry and the soup wasn't that good so she gave up. Beware of the fad diets! You just end up gaining the weight back. IMO exercise is the best.

I have generally found that any diet/exercise program or whatever that seems easy or to good to be true is just that. It may work for awhile, but you cannot indefiantely eat cabbage soup. Besides that it would not be good for you to eat just cabbage soup. Maybe eat start eating cabbage soup for lunch and a healthy breakfast and dinner.

Funny you should mention this one in particular. I was listening to a radio show yesterday about diets and dieting. Apparently this is the worst diet to try. It's not well rounded and if you do lose weight on this diet, you will most certainly put it back on after you go back to your regular eating habits. It might even be dangerous to your health.

Losing weight is about making changes to your eating habits and lifestyle. While excercise is obviously important, the majority of weight loss comes from making changes to your diet. Maintaining a new/lower weight comes from excercise and keeping up with your diet changes. As such, if you are going to diet, you should look for a diet that is 1. well balanced (ie all food groups) and 2. one that you can handle for the rest of your life.

I will never forget the question a fitness teacher once asked our college class -
If it took you 6 years to gain the weight you now want to lose .... how then can you expect to safely lose it in 6 weeks on a fad diet?

You know I have found out over the years that for me to lose weight the best way is just to cut down on my portion sizes. I still eat whatever I want but only take very small portions and then I am done. Another words if I normally would have two pieces of meat just take one and so on like this. And if you eat slowly chances are you will fill up faster and not leave the table still hungry afterwards too.

Forgot to add .... drink a glass or two of water before your meals as well. Not only is water good for you but you will feel "full" before you sit down to eat.
