What wedding superstitions have you heard of (whether you believe them or not)? Here are just some to start our list ...

Rain and Tears
Submitted by: Rebecca L. of Perryville, Missouri
If it rains on your wedding day, you'll shed many tears during your married life.

Tears of Pearls #1
Submitted by: Jane of Albuquerque, New Mexico
I heard the bride should wear pearls on her wedding day to ensure she would not cry.

Over the Threshold
Submitted by: Ashley C. of Coquitlam
When a newly married couple enters their home, the groom should carry the bride over the threshold because if the bride should stumble entering the home, it is a bad omen.

Tying Tin Cans
Submitted by: Ashley C. of Coquitlam
Tying tin cans to the back of the newlywed's car is good luck because the noise will frighten away evil spirits.

Ripped Wedding Dress
Submitted by: Crystal P. of Park Forest, Illinois
If your dress is rippped on the day before your wedding, it means that your marriage will end in death!

Rose Petals
Submitted by: Rachel of Kansas City
Do you know why flower girls drop flower petals as they walk down the aisle? So, the new couple will have lots of chances to have babies!

Smashing Glasses
Submitted by: Lynda of Adelaide, Australia
When you and your husband toast your new life together you must smash the glasses that you toast with. This way the glasses are never used for a better purpose.

Lucky Day to Marry
Submitted by: Monica of Orlando
The Victorians believed it was lucky to marry on a day during the week the groom was born. But the luckiest day to marry was on the groom's actual birthday.

Bad Luck for Bride to Make her Own Dress
Submitted by: Sharon of Detroit, Michigan
My grandmother says that if the bride helps to make her own dress it will bring bad luck. My grandmother made my mother's and my mother made mine. They did it all with no help.

Bad Timing
Submitted by: Sarah of Morehead, Kentucky
My grandmother told me the day of my wedding (10 yrs. ago) to say our vows when the hour hand on the clock is going upwards. This makes you work together in your married life together. She always said that if you said your vows when the hour hand is go down it is bad luck.

There is lots of superstitions tied to many wedding traditions.

Brides carrying flowers evoled from one ... there use to be a common fear of "evil spirits", brides carried stinking bouquets of herbs and spices to frighten the demons away. This is said to be where the term "Nosegay" comes from. (Nosegay is a term generally used by florist's, referring to the popular round shape bridal bouquet)

hahaha...I'm sure I too will be laughing the whole way down the aisle.

My mom told me that if you get married on the half hour ie. 5:30 you're marriage will end in divorce!

My wedding is at 5:30...So you can imagine the hell I've been getting...LOL

A bride carrying a horse shoe is supposed to bring good luck.

My mother wore a horse shoe pin on the inside hem of her wedding dress. I have worn it as have all my sister in-laws. In that 3 of my 4 brothers and myself have been divorced at least once, I wouldn't say it's such good luck. It's just a tradition now.

ETA - hmmmm we have all met the person of our dreams since our first wedding ... so maybe it does bring good luck - just after divorce. LOL

My Mom has a superstition that the night before the wedding before you go to sleeo you place your engagment ring on your right hand.
Basically if it's got any relation to bad luck I want NO PART OF IT!!!!!!!! I'll sleep in garlic the night before if I have to, on my head drinking rotten milk, saying the loards prayer 15 tiems in a row. Well maybe not to that extreme but you get the picture lol

haha actually my mom said you CANT get married ON the hour, (3:00) because the min. hand has to be going up and not going down to ensure a good marriage :) so maybe it would be good luck :)

Of course you can't do this with chocolate, vanilla or anything other than traditional fruit cake but ....

It is said that if you are single, and you attend a wedding, you are supposed to put a piece of the wedding cake under your pillow (they were normally wrapped for giving) and you will dream of the man you are going to marry.
