Well I surprised myself and my fellow co-workers yesterday. I went into work as scheduled and quit and walked out at 2 pm. :bbeek: For the last few days things have not been going that well and yesterday topped the cake for me. I was scheduled to work for 7 hours and asked the office manager when I could schedule my lunch break for at least some time to eat. I was told that if you work for less than 8 hours you had no breaks. :bbeek: What I said?? Not one single break? Her answer was NO. The head checker looked at me and said she worked every day for 7 hours and didn't take a break. I asked her if this was by choice or because they wouldn't allow her to? she looked at me as if I had lost my mind. the discussion got heated from there. I sucked it up and worked another couple hours. Then when it finally slowed down I leaned up against the register to relax a bit. The office manager hollered out the door and told me to quit leaning and stand up straight. :irked: Words had been said the day before to me about this. Hell I am 44 years old and that is a hard habit to break. I thought at first she was playing with me, but she came out and said she was serious. I looked at her and told her to pull my drawer I was done. She said "are you serious, you can't quit". I told her "watch me". I walked upstairs and clocked out and knocked on the managers office door walked in and handed him the time card and told him it wasn't working out and that I would bring my shirts in today and pick up my last check next friday. He just said "ok". I worked as a legal secretary enough years to know that legally you are allowed breaks in the work force. I have never been so angry over a job. So now I am back to square one. Looking for work. Wish me luck. And this time I am not going to whine about being home.

Good Luck hun!
What happend to you is total ****!
That is terrible! In Canada i belive you are intitled to a 15min break every 4 hours. For 8 i think you get a 30 min break.
I hope you have good luck finding a new job! :grinhappy:

Yes, when you are scheduled for 8 hours or more, you are entitled to a half hour lunch and two 15 min breaks. Less then 8 hours, you are still entitled to at least a 15 minute break. You had a right to a break by law and I think you did the right thing. I am sorry that it happened though as I know how much it sucks to be unemployed, but good luck on finding a new job.

Good for you they seem like total jerks to work for, when are employers ever going to learn to treat their employees the way that any human being would like to be treated. Good luck in finding a new and better job with nicer people. By the way if you work at least 6 hours yoiu are entitled to a lunch.

Yeah I think you are suppose to get one 15 min break for every 5 hours you work here and 30 mins for 8 hours. Companies can get sued for working people like that and not allowing breaks. Good for you not letting them treat you like that. Maybe others will stand up to them too.
When I use to wait tables I didn't get much of a break unless I worked a double shift, it sucked big time! I would come home with my feet and back hurting just about daily. I would get so mad at the smokers that would take many smoke breaks and I didn't get any :irked:
When I worked in retail, I worked 9 hour shifts ... got one unpaid 1 hr lunch and two 15 min paid breaks.
Well I wish you the best in finding a new and better job!

I work in retail and our rule is you get a 30 min lunch after 6 hrs if u work between 10am and 2pm. If you choose not to take it you still dont get paid for it. What they said is ****. Congrats to you for doing whats right and good luck with what comes next.

I am glad you did what you felt was right, best wishes finding a better job. :) Next time call a lawyer, so that companies don't do this to others.

I have decided to go to school to get my LPN license. This is something I have been comtemplating for some time now. My husband has been after me since we married to do so. I started once years ago and it was to difficult when the kids were so young. And because I had a husband that I received no help from whatsoever. this is not the case now. My husband (I know) will back me 100% and do whatever it takes to see me through it. So Monday morning I am going to the technical campus here and applying. Or at least finding out what all I need to do to start in the term that starts in January. I am excited about it. At the end of a year we would be doing so much better financially and we CAN survive till then.

Good for standing up for yourself! BTW - Do you have a state labour board? Can you file a complaint against them at the very least?
Good to hear that you are going after your dreams too! Something good always comes of something bad :)
