So I want to get DH an e-reader for Christmas. I have seen the off brands, and I don't think I trust them so I am sticking to a Nook or Kindle. I have no idea what the difference between the two is! Just one is Amazon and one is BN. We set our limit to $100, so he's not getting a fancy edition or anything. The basic Kindle is $80 and the Kindle Touch is $100. The basic Nook (which is also touch) is also $100. If I get the basic Kindle I can get him a gift card as well for books, or I can just do either of the touches and he can just buy the books later. Apparently you can borrow books from the library on both of them! Neat.

Anyone have either of them? Opinions? Know some of the major complaints or compliments on either of them? I want to buy it soon.

I have a kindle (not a kindle touch) and I love it. I get mostly the free books, I have only paid for a few. I know nothing about the nook so I can't really compare them.

Good luck in deciding!

I have the Nook Color which is a touch. DH has just the originally Nook which is B&W and not a touch. We like them both. They have an app store for the Nook now which is cool if he wants to use it for more than just reading. I have music, games, and books on mine.

If you live near a Barnes and Noble it is nice because you can go there and read on your Nook for an hour per day for free - Any book. You can also bring your Nook there and they offer free things when you sync up to their wi-fi. Of course, I always forget mine when I go there! They have a lot of free books also. I get a lot of free books off of it.

I have the Nook Color which is great for what I use it for. Mostly for reading at night while Jacob sleeps. It has a back light which I really like and it does not disturbs him while he sleeps.

It has options to adjust the text so you can have large text or small text.

I also look as Magazines which is great since the nook is color. I take it when I travel and it cuts down on a lot of my luggage when I want to read. Yanno instead of actually carrying all those magazines and books.

Rarely do I use the web browser but when I do its just like when I am on my husbands Ipad which is very convenient.

If you do decide to get a nook let me know and I can email you the ebooks I have. (I have over 10,000 ebooks in my hardrive) Mostly nonfiction, mystery and romance LOL you could put them on a thumb drive and use it as a stocking stuffer.

I have a Kindle with E-ink (no backlight). I love that feature of it because it doesn't hurt my eyes as much (I spend A LOT of time staring at computer screens).

I've heard that the color actually hurts your eyes more. Is that true?

Most of the books seem to be priced about the same. Do Amazon or BN ever have e-book sales? Hmm. I might have to go talk to the Nook people at BN.

I love that you get an hour of free reading at BN a day! DH and I LOVE going there to read together.

I have no idea about the color - mine's black and white.

Amazon has a lot of Kindle book sales. Though, IMHO most of the books they put on sale don't seem worth the money. It's also often cheaper to get a used paperback than a Kindle book on Amazon, but not always. The principle benefit is that it's smaller than books, the instant gratification factor, and free stuff from Gutenberg and the library. I'd search around a bit on Buffalo&Erie's selection. Seattle's rocks, but I'm not privy to how the licensing works so I'm not sure how the selection would go.

I have a kindle (first generation from years ago!) that I absolutely love. My step-mom got one the same time I did. Eventually the battery quit working on hers, and when she e-mailed amazon about it, they gave her a credit of $80 towards a new one, even though I'm pretty sure the warranty was up. Mine still works (although I mostly use the app on my phone now) but we have always had great interactions with Amazon in regards to support.

One thing I know kindle does with library books (and I'm not sure if nook does it or not) is that if you make notes, mark pages, etc. with a "library" e-book, amazon syncs and saves them so that if you eventually buy the book, it'll come with all your notes. I think they save if you check it out again, too.

I have no experience with the nook, so I can't really compare them.

I do have to agree that Amazon's customer support has been Amazing. Several times now I have accidentally bought a book I didn't want (my own fault) and I emailed them and had a refund in about an hour.

I love Amazon, so I think I am leaning towards a Kindle.

Considering this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Keyboard-Free-Wi-Fi-Display/dp/B004HZYA6E/ref=amb_link_356876842_10?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-10&pf_rd_r=00JZ5ZTC85HM2QMEBNTD&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=1332079582&pf_rd_i=B002GYWHSQFree 3-G... totally worth the extra $40. He doesn't have to know I spent $40 extra. ;)

He's not big on touch, so I think it's my best bet. Too bad I missed Black Friday. Apparently Target had it for $90! :( Should I wait and see if it goes on sale again? I heard that happens sometimes.

Minus the 3-G, that's the one I have. I love it. I wish I got the internet on it, it was too expensive to afford when I bough it but it would have rendered a smartphone nil!

Yeah. It's the same price now! And they all come with free wi-fi.

I haven't had problems with my Nook hurting my eyes. They have different settings where you can turn the brightness down and adjust the colors. Mine is set on the gray background so it is more dull.

I have the regular nook...for now. This weekend hubby is upgrading me to nook color...wiggle dance here...One thing I love about Nook is I can take to any barnes and noble for any help. Also not sure if this is idea but this is how we always buy electronics. BN has an outlet on ebay where you buy refurb nook's. Right now Nook Color is $129. Normally $199 brand new in store or $149 refurb on ebay. Just a thought. I have over 80 books on mine currently and I usually buy cheaper books...how I find my fav authors actually lol. And BN does have a free section for books.

Dont mean to thread jack but I have over 2 gigs of ebooks for the nook in my dropbox I will be willing to share. If anyone wants the login information for it let me know via pm. (I share this dropbox with a few other of my friends who also share their ebooks)

I have 10 gigs in my actual hard drive so I could email you ebooks as well.

I have lots of mystery, romance, non-fiction and YA books.

Same here for me. I was worried that the free books would be kind of bleh, but I'm actually really enjoying them so far! I'm in the same boat though in that I know nothing about the Nook.

Hmm. Now I am finding the regular Keyboard for $100 "with special offers." What does "with special offers" mean? So confusing!

"Special Offers" means "Oil of Olay Advertisements". I busted the screen on my kindle and they sent me a new one, but by accident it was the special offers one. (I called them and they fixed this.) It's worth whatever extra money you pay not to have the ads, IMHO.

Oh wow! Thanks. Yeah... I don't want him to have a million advertisements. Good call.

Bringing this thread back. I want an e-reader now, but I think I want a Tablet e-reader. Not for apps and stuff. For reading and watching movies while at the gym and such. Maybe for music, too. I have an iPhone, I don't need another device with apps. Thoughts on either?

DH and I got a Kindle Fire at Christmas time. For reading it's fabulous. I've also enjoyed watching the streaming video, but haven't downloaded any movies yet. The Amazon Prime is great for the free video if it's stuff you're interested in. That's mostly what we use (and why we haven't felt the need to buy anything yet!)

For music, it's a pain. I prefer to simply use my iPhone. I put less than 100 songs on it and it took the better part of two days to convert from my iTunes and load. It really doesn't give you a ton of free storage for music, but it's nice to have a little bit if you're the kind of person who likes having some music playing in the background while you read and don't want to fool with multiple devices.

And while I don't have many apps on it, I do prefer playing angry birds on the bigger screen :)

Ended up with the Fire. I like that I get a free month of Prime. And that there are free apps. Apparently Nook owners complained about the lack of free apps.

I have to say I love the nook and the free apps I have found I'm not overly impressed with but as far as music I usually will use pandora and listen while reading or plug into radio at home to clean. If I'm not somewhere with free wifi I will use my phone for music on pandora or now with my iphone I use my music there.

Yeah. I have Pandora on here. It's nice for the gym. Other than that, I have my iPhone. I love Amazon. I love BN. Now I have a Kindle and DH has a Nook. Works out well! Still no preference lol.

I love it! I have all my powerpoints for school on it, so it makes it nice to study with the notes and text book at the same time (without wasting a ton of paper and ink... this lady has about 50 slides a chapter!).
