I was out earlier and saw a sign and it just popped in my head. I have wondered it before, but never really found out.

It's because from the outside it looks like one building. When inside they are "Apart" from each other.

In the UK we call them Flats because they are on one level and "Flat"

One place i'm looking at i would call an Apartment because it's on two levels above a flat. Confused yet. :laugh2:

Yeah, most of our apartments have 2 or 3 levels. We also have what is called a "duplex" which is like 2 or 3 one level apartments together ;)

Apartment buildings or the apartments themselves? If the apartments themselves have more than one level around you.... uh, address please ;)

I meant the buildings; like we used to live in an apartment building that had 3 levels. I was happy we lived on the bottom; I would hate to have to move or carry groceries up those stairs!

We have multi apartments here, but the rent is outrageous. Or it was before the economy tanked...
