We are trying to save money before we take on the major expense of home ownership. It is frustrating paying that rent check every month. It feels like the money is going nowhere. Anyone else feel this way?

Speaking as someone who owns, I feel nostalgia when it comes to renting. I miss the good old days when the landlord was the person who had to deal with it when something goes wrong. Now if there's a leak or an electrical problem, it's solely my responsibility. If I could sell this place and go back to renting I would, but with the economy the way it is I would never get what I paid for it.
Guess the grass always looks greener on the other side, huh?

Yes that is nice being able to call up my landlord if there is a problem. The biggest downfall to renting is not enough space and no privacy!!!!

you could rent a bigger place maybe? something you are happier with until you can buy. thats what me and Dh are doing.
Im waiting to get our lives in order (credit & debt) until we buy... The good news is, if the USA ever hand us a visa we can up sticks in no time haha ;) x

Leah, are you trying to come to the US? :D
I don't mind renting. Yeah, it's "lost" money (but it doesn't seem like buying prevents that from happening!) but it lets us live in a pretty cool part of the city, and we're waaaaay too much in a transitional moment to buy anything. And there's a general lack of money. So I really don't mind.

DH and I have considered buying a house, but we're only planning on living here for about 5 years. So, we don't want to buy, and then have to deal with a poor economy when trying to sell in a few years.
If both of you have good credit, good jobs, plan on staying where you are for a long while, and are in a position to buy a house, then I would start looking around just to check out the market and get an idea of what's out there and the price ranges and such. But if even one of those factors is a little shaky, then you might want to continue to rent a while until you're in a better position to buy a house. ;)

We rented right after we were married for a while until we were able to decide where we wanted to settle. We ended up buying a lot sooner than we thought we would because we found a really fabulous deal on our house. Our mortgage was about the same as our rent and it's OURS! We don't have to get permission to paint or redecorate. Even with the poor economy, we could probably sell it pretty easily for less than the going rate in our neighborhood and come out ahead. We're about to have our mortgage paid off so that's definitely working in our favor, too.
