I was going to alter my Mom's wedding dress but they quoted me at the starting price of $2,500. I ended up getting my dream dress and having it altered but it wasn't $2,500 dollars worth. My best suggestion, pick a dress that doesn't need any or many alterations. Best of luck to you.
P.S.
I wanted to add that $330 for a dress is steal of deal from where I'm from which is why her alterations are practically the same price as the dress. And alterations vary from $300-600 on the average here (just to tighten up the dress a bit and change the length). If you want more work done (like what I wanted to do to my Mom's dress) the price jumps like crazy.

Wow Missie!! I have never heard of alterations costing that much.
My dress was less that $75 dollars to alter but I only had to get it shortened, some clasps sewed on the back, and some bead work touched up so I didn't have any huge alterations. Also, I got mine done at a little place in the mall in town to keep my costs down. Though, sometimes you can find private places that are reasonable.
I would do like Missie suggested and try to find one that doesn't need many alterations to keep your cost down.

Yeah I was shocked at the price too. But then I realize, I live in San Francisco where everything is expensive as heck.

You might not need many alterations at all. All I had done was a bustle and it cost $65. If you buy a dress without a train, no need to bustle. Corset backs give you more wiggle room for a fit.
Go try some dresses on, you honestly might not need anything depending on the gown and your height.
