I read something the other day about how this will now be available over the counter without a prescription in some areas. I think this is great!
So with all the debate over abortion, I am curious what everyone thinks about this.
As always lets respect each others views even if they don't match our own.

Although with an abortion I am not pro-life or pro-choice, but I am for the morning after pill 100% I don't know how long you can take it after conception for it to be effective, but I do know that it takes several days for the embryo to even reach the uterus. I know there is a big debate over when life begins, but to me it surely does not begin until it gets in the uterus.

First of let me say this, it is another vicotry for Team Girl! Goooooooo Team Girl!
Now how it works is like this:
The first thing the pill does is tricks the body into thinking it is already pregnant by releasing huge amounts of progesterone. This prevents the body from ovulating.
On the rare instance the ovulation has occured, chemicals are released byt he body triggered by the pill to make it very hard to sperm to reach and penetrate the egg.
Now, on the very rare instance that fertilization did occur, the hormones released earlier will prevent the embryo from attaching in the uterus.
It is my understanding that the pill cuts your chances of pregnancy from the standard 8% to 1%.
And before someone tosses out the argument that it is going to cause more STDS and sexual behavior. Two studies have been done, independently by neutral parties proving this is NOT true.
As for minors needing a script. I see the reasoning. The pill is very specific. THey do need a doctor or at least a trained nurse to go over it with them. HOwever, as we have all proved on the drinking age thread, how many of us actually do the age thing? The same of age friend who just bought you beer will probably go pick up some Plan B for you too.

I think the morning after pill is one of the great inventions of our time. I don't like how some people use it as their means of BC, as it seems irresponsible to be hanging your chances of pregnancy on a pill that you might not be able to get. But, there are definite situations where the M-A pill is the perfect aid for someone whose, say, condom broke.

I voted not a fan of it because this I am on the fence about. You can't really tell at the time you take it if you are pregnant or not... So I don't know in this case.
The only other thing is that there have been 5 deaths of women who have taken the morning after pill... That's scarey.
I don't know... i'm on the fence on this subject.

If you already have an established pregnant (planted in the uterus) it doesn't effect that. If just gives your body an extra does of progesterone that you are already producing anyway. It doesn't harm an established pregnancy at all.
As for 5 women dying from taking it, people die from taking penicillin and Tylenol too.

The point of the pill is to take it right after unprotected sex (or broken condom and such) to avoid becoming pregnant.
... The only other thing is that there have been 5 deaths of women who have taken the morning after pill... That's scarey.
I'm sure there have been deaths related to alot of things out there ... if something is found to be that dangerous then it is usually taken off the market.

What I am saying about not being able to tell if you are pregnant when you take it is the fact that I am against abortion.. so I don't think it would go against that because if lets say I have sex and the "morning after" I have sex I take the pill...
oh nevermind... I can't exactly type what I have in my head so that it comes out sounding right...
Basically I don't know if I am for it or against it... I haven't researched it enough.

So if you forgot to take your BC pill and/or the condom breaks or you are raped or molested then you are just SOL?
To me this would be a better option than to wait and end up with an unwanted pregnancy from one of these scenarios and then have to consider abortion ... JMO.

Brandi as I said I am still unclear on this. The only thing I have seen or heard of this pill is a girl I worked with used it all the time. She would always take one if her and her boyfreind had unprotected sex. I think this is where I get the feeling of not liking it from. She used it as a form of BC. I dont that is right at all. But again JMO.
I am not against it as I am not against abortion but it is not for me. If something happened and either one of these was an option for me I would have to talk and think alot.
If it is for others great, I will not ever tell some one what not to do or what to do. I have my rights as others have their's. If some one else chooses to use it then that is up to them. I am just no sure on the matter.

I heard on the news that it is more expensive than BC pills or condoms (I think $40). I don't doubt some will use it at BC, but that probably wouldn't be the majority. Not to mention it's probably pretty harsh on your body, I know I wouldn't want to be doing that every time I had sex.

Now that it is over the counter, you don't have a hope of medical insurance covering it. (I'm not sure if they covered it when it was a prescription only deal or not.) And you are right, it could be very hard on your body. It mimics the hormonal influx that you get at the start of pregnancy, kind of the way regular bc pills do. I know when I first started bc pills I thought I was going to die. My head hurt. I was nauseous. I was bloated. It wasn't pleasant for about 2 weeks. With this pill you are super sizing that hormone doseage. It is definately not something for everyday useage.
Although at $40 a pop it is still cheaper than my birth control at $52.(No my wonderful health insurance will not cover my bc pills because they are not the generic form.) If you figure I take the pill every day but my hsuband and I are sexually active, maybe once a month. It might be a cheaper option. :bblol:

Geez, you can't even get a copay and only pay the price diff. bet. the generic and the ones you take? That's a whole lot of wrong!

It sucks. The thing is that the ones that I am on are very new to the market, so no generics yet. But it is still cheaper than the alternative of having a baby.

Yeah, that is exactly why your ins. co. should be falling all over themselves to pay for it!

Wow.. I take name brand birthcontrol and luckily my insurance pays for it.
Well I pay for it considering they take $100 out of my check each pay period... So technically I feel like I am paying $200 a month for one packet of bc

Well, if I were on anything else, they would be. I go to the gyno in November. So I am going to see if there is something I can switch to then. I just hate doing that because NOTHING else has worked thus far.

I will say it's not for me, but in certain circumstance I believe that a woman should have the right to take this pill if she wants to! I would never in a million years take it even if I was raped and became pregnant. I am pro life and believe that child did not ask for death because it's father is a rapist, I would most likely put the child up for adoption though.

I hope you didn't think I was bashing you or anything, I was just curious why you felt the way you did. Yeah if someone takes this all the time then they are abusing it, that is not what it is intended for.

Here we have to go to see the nurse in the Family Planning clinic or our usual GP, again we dont pay for it. There has been some debate over whether school nurses should be able to give it out. There are only a certain amount of times ur allowed it in a certain time but to comabt this then i suppose one whould just have to go a different clinic! x

So many think "Morning After Pill" and automatically think it's the "Abortion Pill".
It doesn't terminate the fetus. It prevents pregnancy from happening. But if you're already pregnant, it doesn't hurt the fetus. Just to clarify. :bbmrgreen:
