View Full Version : Don't know what to do

So this is the health and happiness section, right? Hope I'm putting this in the right spot.

Not sure what to do. Thursday evening, I went to a friend's house for dinner before we headed to town (about an hour away) for Bible Study. Her mom made fish. Now, I do like fish, but I don't eat it all the time. In fact, it's pretty rare that I have fish, actually. But, as far as I know, I am NOT allergic to it. In fact, I'm really not allergic to any foods (that I can think of :boggle:).

Well, on the way to Bible Study, I started feeling sick to my stomach. I told my friend. She asked me if I wanted to turn around, but I said no. When we got there, I started shaking and shivering, but I was hot. It felt like I had a fever, but I didn't. My friend decided to go ahead and take me home, even before Bible Study even started.

That whole night, I had the shakes. Didn't sleep well at all. In the morning, I took a drink of water, and promptly threw it up. It was the first ANYTHING that I'd had since that meal, and I couldn't keep it down. Took some Pepto Bismol and did OK the rest of the day, but didn't feel great. Went to lunch with FMIL and my mother. My stomach started to act up, but nothing happened. Just sorta rumbled and gurgled. Thought that maybe I might throw up, but never did. I just had a bad headache the whole day.

My bridal shower was that night. I was feeling alright. Not great, but I forced myself to not feel bad during the shower. Took some Tums and Ibuprofen, and made the best of it. After the shower, though, I started feeling sick again. Went home and went to bed and took some more Pepto Bismol and Ibuprofen for the stomach and headache.

Today, I've had a headache all day. No amount of Ibuprofen or Aspirin has done ANYTHING to curb the headache. Not even a bit. My stomach's OK, but I don't have any appetite. I really haven't eaten much in the last 3 days, due to feeling really sick. And the funny thing is that I'm really not hungry. I know I SHOULD make myself eat, but today, I didn't have anything at all to eat until 5:30pm. I know, I know. That's not good and I need to force myself to eat! But when you're not hungry, and you seem to throw everything up anyways, or at least feel really queezy every time you eat, it doesn't exactly make you want to eat anything. :purplex:

I don't have insurance for another month and a half, so I'd really, really, really rather NOT go to the doctor. But, I know I probably should. I'd like to try some other things before doing that, just in case I CAN "fix" this on my own without the help of a doctor (and the several hundred $$$ doctor bill for tests and whatnot ). I'm just not sure what else to do, or what it could be! It's not food poisoning because 5 of us ate the same thing and I'm the only one that got sick. I can't imagine that it's STILL an allergic reaction (if that was, in fact, what it was to begin with). You'd think that would have ended by now. Plus, I've never been allergic to fish before, so I can't imagine that that's what it was. I've tried "waiting it out" to see if these symptoms will just go away on their own, but so far, they haven't.

Does anyone have a suggestion (other than go to the doctor). :bbeek:

Sounds like you probably have a virus. I'd give it a few more days - try to flush it out with lots of fluids and don't eat anything except bland stuff, like crackers and chicken broth and baked potatoes. Don't do anything too taxing either - try to rest! Hope you feel better. :flower:

Sounds kind of like food poisoning. Take it easy for a few days. Try clear broths, and if it doesn't clear up, you may not have a choice but to go to the doc.

If the headaches persist, I wouldn't mess around with that though.

This.

Sounds like food poisoning. Drink plenty of fluids otherwise you will end up in the hospital. And if you have to poop it out, do it. It helps to get the toxins out - even if it has to come out of both ends. Slow your role on the asprins and the Motrin. Motrin is VERY hard on the stomach, you have to eat with it! If you can handle the headache, lie down and don't take any more meds. Drink lots and lots of water. Eat crackers. Put yourself on the BRAT diet. Viruses start off the same way too. Shakes then fevers. But remember, fevers up to 102 can be beneficial. It helps kill off the virus in your body.

Get some rest. Otherwise you won't fit your fairytale dress for your fairytale wedding.

One more thing. As a rule of thumb because I'm paranoid, I don't eat anyone's fish. My cousin had bad fish from her job and did a 3-day stint in the hospital. She was that dehydrated from the vomiting and poopies.

I can't imagine it was food poisoning. How can ONE person out of the FIVE that ate it get food poisoning and the other four don't?!

I'll try waiting it out a few more days, eating crackers. I haven't tried the cracker thing, but I'm gonna see if I can get my momma to go get me some Sprite. I have plenty of crackers. I just hope this ends soon. :yesnod:

Well, since I'm not eating much, I've actually lost a few lbs. And since the dress was 2 sizes too small to begin with (we had the panel taken out an inch), losing a few lbs will actually HELP me fit my dress better! :D ;)

I know of lots of people who eat certain foods and some get sick, some don't. I am sure it has to do with each persons individual antibodies. It may not have even been the fish. I believe food poisoning can take up to 24 hours before you get sick.

See, that's the other thing that makes me think it was an allergic reaction. In addition to being the only one out of 5 who got sick, it also started almost immediately (and has now lasted 3 1/2 days ). I've never been allergic to fish before, but I'm thinking that I just might be now!!!

Fish allergies are usually bad from what I've heard (rash, itching, swelling, etc). If it was food poisoning of some kind I would think that most everyone that ate the same thing would be sick.

It could have been something else in the food that made you sick, or it could be something else and the fish was just a coincidence.

If you don't feel better after a couple of days I would try to go to the Dr; I know out here you can go to Walgreen's for basic stuff without insurance.

Hope you feel better soon!

A friend has a seafood allergy and when she is having a reaction, she gets hives almost immediately, then her tongue and glands swell up and she has extreme difficulty breathing. I've never heard of an actual food allergy (rather then intolerance) presenting with stomach-related symptoms, but I've no medical training so I could be totally wrong. I hope you aren't allergic! Food allergies suck. FWIW, a few weeks ago we all had KFC for dinner, because we felt like our arteries weren't hard enough, and my brother got food poisoning and no one else did even though it all come out of the same bucket. So maybe you were just really really unlucky?

Oh yeah. It happens. I've treated a whole lotta slight cases of food poisoning where only one person got sick. As mentioned before, it's the bateria present in your intestines that react first. Reject or receive!

Are you sure you're not pregnant? Go POAS and get back to me. :calm:

Well, whatever it was, it's gone and done its thing and it's over with. I couldn't be happier either! :yesnod:

I can tell you're an American. Your percentages are inflated.
