Well, I got some depressing news today. We have two guinea pigs, Peanut and Spaz. They are our babies. Well, Peanut hasn't been acting right the last few days. We notice this weekend that he hasn't been eating, so we took him to the vet today.
The vet says it doesn't look good. He think the poor things kidneys are shutting down. He has lost a lot of weight and doesn't want to run around at all anymore. The vet gave us some meds just in case the kidneys aren't the problem, but said he can say that Peanut won't make it to September.
I'm kinda bummed now. I mean, it's only a guinea pig, but he's so cute and I love the poor guy. Steve is really upset. He got so attached to him once I moved up here, that he had to get his own (Spaz).
This is the reason why my dad doesn't like pets. When they get sick, there isn't much you can do for them without going into major debit. I'm starting to take his opinion more and more.
Steve's parents dog will have to be put to sleep soon. He is 16 years old and they just found out he may have cancer. He has started with a lump on his neck the last few month and it it starting to grow a lot. They can't afford to have anything done for the poor dog.
It's not a good time for animals for us I guess.

I'm sorry, Nikki!! Guinea pigs have a very short mortality. My Mom used to raise them. They are so cute and lovable. It must be really hard. Your parents 16-year old dog had a good long life. Take some comfort in that. My thoughts and prayers are with you guys right now!

Awww i'm sorry to hear that!
It's never easy to loose a pet no matter how little. I cried over my goldfish.
Big Hugs! Hopefully the meds will help.
Take care!

I'm sorry to hear that. I think it is better to have enjoyed the love of a pet and have it lost than to never know what it is like to have the love of an animal. I think animals can bring out so many great things in people. They can teach us to be unselfish and responsible. It is also good to experience unconditional love. Just remember the good times.

My condolences. I understand the love of Piggies. I had some for years, and the day that Elias came home, the piggies had to go.
Hugs sweetie!

Sorry to hear about your guinea pig; poor fellow.
I found out recently that my ex had our family dogs put down. Here is what a friend sent to me. It may not lessen the pain but it was somewhat comforting to me.
BTW - There are more poems to be found here - http://www.petloss.com/poems/poems.htm
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thank you so much for all the kind words. Peanut isn't doing good at all today. He doesn't have the energy to lift his head or move at all. He can't even open his mouth on his own so we can give him his medicine. We don't expect him to last the week. i just started to cry today as Steve was trying to give him his medicine. Yesterday he was running around the room, now, he can't stand up.

I just thought I'd let you know a half hour after that last post, Peanut passed away. I was sitting here on the computer and he started to squeak. I was kinda excited cause I thought he was getting better. But when I picked him up, I could just tell it was just about over. Steve and I were with him and now he is up in heaven with my dog that died a few years ago.

I agree and I am sorry too
We had a young rottweiler pup many years ago that broke it's hip and I couldn't afford the surgery to fix it and the vet said he'd never walk again without it, so we had to put him down.
I have a friend now who has a 13 yr old cockier spaniel with cancer. She can't afford to do anything but try to make the dog comfortable for whatever time she has left.
My puppy Roxy, broke her leg a few weeks ago and it cost us $3,000 for the surgery to fix it! We have pet insurance that will pay for probably half that but it is still alot. Now she has a UTI and we had to spend another $65 to get her seen and medicated to clear that up. Then she is due for her spay in a couple of weeks too and that will cost about $200. She is still young and she isn't dieing, but I guess what I am saying is that proper pet care is expensive.
All we can do is be prepared as much as possible and give them as much love as we can for as long as they are with us.
My thoughts and prayers are with you too!

Thanks Shawna and Brandi.
When we went to see the vet yesterday he said he could do some test and other treatments, but it would cost hundreds of dollars and he couldn't he sure it would work. We didn't think he would go so quickly though!
I had a dog that died a few years ago from cancer. We had taken him to the vet, was told he had abotu 3-6 months, and he died a week later. Steve cheered me up a bit reminding me that Peanut is now with that dog.

I'm so sorry, Nikki, about Peanut.
I know how horrible it is to lose a pet. A couple of years ago, one of my cats had some kittens. One was born with one of his ribs not completely grown, but survived. About 6 months after he was born, he got outside through a window, and got into a fight with another cat. We took him to the vet, and found out that his rib had pierced his lung. He had to be put to sleep as even surgery couldn't help him. I cried for hours.
I feel for you and wish you comfort.

I'm doing better today. Yesterday I had a break down when we went to clean up his cage and when I went to fill the other guinea pig's water bottle. I kinda surprised myself. I mean, it's just a guinea pig, I didn't realize how attached to him I was!

I'm sorry about Peanut, Nikki.
Vet care is outrageous. Ruffles was hit by a car back in 1996. She had to basically have her entire head and front leg reconstructed. I don't know how my parents swung it.
For dogs and cats, there are several health insurance options that you can look into. They vary in what they cover and price.
