If i understand correctly a duvet is kind of like a cover that goes over comforters... like my mom bought us a down comforter and it's just basic white and ur supposed to put a duvet over it to jazz it up...

I have often wondered the same thing ;)

A duvet is like a pillow case for a comforter. You put your comforter inside and it closes with buttons or snaps or zipper, etc. A coverlet is more like a quilt. Its not poofy or fluffy.

Duvet's are a pain in the butt, trying to get the comforter in there straight. LOL
Coverlets are what Katie said. :)

Thanks everyone for the advice! So Gwen, after you put the comforter in, will it lay nice or will it bunch up? Its would be for a guest bedroom, so not an everyday thing, but I'm also not really looking for a challenge either lol

It'll lay flat but if the person is a tosser and turner they might necessitate having to go back in there and straighten it out.

I like duvets better because you can just take the duvet off and just wash it and NOT the entire comforter. My comforter doesn't fit in my washer and because its a king size, it doesn't fit in the washer at a laundry mat either. I would MUCH rather wash a cover. Besides you can change the duvet and not have to buy another comforter.

That's true. That was much easier when we had the duvet. I've taken to cleaning our comforter now in the dryer with one of those dry cleaning sheets because I can't fit it into the washer. :yesnod:

Being from the UK. I had to Google a "Comforter".
Now this can get confusing lol.
Comforters in the US are what we call Duvets in the UK. We have a 10.5 Tog one on our Bed. Although i would love a 15 Tog one because i love a bit of weight when i sleep.
Then there's a Duvet Cover that goes round and pops or buttons at the bottom. Dead easy to put on. A bit like a giant Pillow.
Most homes have them in the UK. Every Hotel i've worked in or stayed in has Duvets on the Bed. Much easier than fighting with loads of Blankets and Throws. ;)

I actually trying to figure out how to make our comforter into a duvet so I can use it again. Its so pretty and matches the room so well, I don't want another duvet. But I've stopped putting it on the bed since I can't wash it. Glad it matches from the hall closet,
