We are thinking of trying to have some sort of little party for DH's Dad since he is retiring soon.

So we got to thinking ... do you get gifts for retirement? If so, what is a good type of gift?

We always celebrate Retirement in the UK. And i tend to chuckle every time.

For some reason Companies tend to give Carriage Clocks. Which is where the chuckle comes in. If someone is Retiring after years of watching a clock. The last thing they want is another one to look at. :laugh2:

Does he have any Hobbies? Music, Theatre, Golf etc? Maybe a gift card for a Hobby.

Does he drink? Maybe a nice posh personalized Glass.

When my Dad retired from the Ambulance Service they gave him a long service Medal for 35 years in the Service. But he was a Tank Driver in the Army when he met my Mum. So when he reached 65 my Brother and I paid for him to go Tank Driving. He thought he was meeting his Sister for a meal. But we hid his scruffy clothes and Welly Boots in the Car and drove him to a quarry. He loved it. So much so, the guy who owned the Tanks offered him a Job teaching others to drive.

I have heard of gift giving, and like Mitch, I think the best thing would be some type of hobby for him. Anything that holds his interest that he generally doesn't get to do because of work.
