I wish I could use coupons more but I just don't have the time or the organizational skills needed. It feels soooo good to save money though, I really wish I could get into it.

I used to be really good about couponing, but I'm not doing so well anymore! I cut coupons every Sunday, but my coupon organizer has been in the car for about 6 months and I keep forgetting to bring it in to organize everything.
I had a coworker who used to do extreme couponing. He would buy hundreds of dollars worth of items and spend a few. It was incredible! I just don't have the time to be that organized!

I'm all about my sale + coupon bargains! But I'm not an extreme couponer by any means. I really only find them for brands I want to buy anyway (like 7th Generation which can be pricey) because I really don't buy most things I find coupons for.

Before I was a vegetarian I used to do it ALL THE TIME. I'd combine them with sales, and I used to save a lot of money that way.
These days... not so much. Seattle isn't the competitive grocery market that Buffalo/Syracuse NY were and on top of that, the coupons are often for things I do not eat (prepackaged food including dairy, eggs or meat). I also switched to cleaning my apartment mainly vinegar and baking soda, I wash my hair with apple cider vinegar and baking soda and Dr. Bonners...I pretty much out-cheaped the cleaners, so now I have little to no incentive to coupon anymore because my consumption habits changed.
Although I still look through the coupons, but it's for like Seventh generation paper products, pretty much.

I've recently started kind of getting into using coupons. I have noticed that a lot of them are for stuff I don't buy, but I find them for stuff I do buy, I'll use them. I also look at the ones online but there's rarely anything on there that I would actually buy. I have noticed that there are customers at my work that will come up with huge stacks of them, and the total goes down to a few dollars.
One time there was a guy who came up with two Breyers ice creams... the sale was buy one get one free, and he had a coupon for the same. So he got two ice creams for free. (Yup, the store does allow them to get them both free.)
I wish I was organized enough to be able to use the coupons wisely, like when there is a good sale on the item already.. but for now, I mostly use them right after I clip them.

I'm so jealous that you took a class about this!! We've been trying to coupon, and have done okay. It just takes SO much time, and it's frustrating when things don't work out as planned. I do almost all my shopping at Kroger, b/c they used to allow you to combine digital and paper coupons, but I don't think they do anymore, so now I might look at other places for deals. It takes discipline, though, and very meticulous organization, which makes an already not fun chore like going to the grocery that much more of a pain. I'm going to keep at it, b/c I'm bound to get good at!
We got colgate (maybe crest) toothpaste free a few weeks a go, and secret deodorant and old spice products were under a dollar using coupons, but I combined digital and paper. I also got toilet paper and paper towels really cheap (like 3 for an 8 pack of paper towel and 2.5 for a 12 pack of double rolls of charmin). On facebook there are some great pages you can "like" and they will post deals. One I use is grocery shop for free (I believe that is the name of it, if you look on my facebook at the pages I like, you should see it).
Anyway, I'm excited about this thread, and maybe it will keep me motivated!

I think one key thing is NOT using the coupon right when you get it, but hanging on to it until there's a sale. I clip ones for just the things I'll get anyway, then carry them around until I see that item on sale and then buy extra (when feasible).

Oh, http://www.couponmom.com/ is really cool because she matches up all that week's coupons in the Sunday paper and online with that week's sale at your grocery stores, basically doing all that work for you!! It's similar to http://www.thegrocerygame.com/ but free. Though you can also get a free 4-week trial of the grocery game and see how it works.

I keep seeing previews for that show on TLC and I cannot believe those women pay only a few dollars for several hundred dollars worth of groceries! I've been pretty good about watching sales (our local grocery store doubles coupons on Wednesdays and Saturdays), but I'd love to figure out the "tricks"!

I so wish I had the time/patience/dedication to cut coupons. They CAN save you a lot of money. I know other people who actually spend MORE money cutting coupons because it causes them to buy things that they wouldn't normally buy (which, of course, is the intent of the company advertising the coupon ;)). But if you're diligent about ONLY using coupons for things that you would have bought otherwise, you can save quite a bit of money. I just don't have the time, patience or dedication to do it. :(

Her website is www.blessingsncouponing.blogspot.com (http://www.blessingsncouponing.blogspot.com) another good one is www.moneysavingmom.com (http://www.moneysavingmom.com)
I am super excited about this and the best part....Charlie is on board with it!!! Bonus!!

Oh yeah, drug stores have the cash back systems and people have figured out how to roll the rewards to eventually only get things free.
Here's a Rite Aid site that helps you learn the system: http://www.iheartriteaid.com/
CVS: http://www.iheartcvs.com/
Walgreens: http://www.iheartwags.com/
I look at the blog http://hookedonbargains.com/ quite frequently. Not only can you get ideas for great buys, but also for online deals and free samples mailed to you. I also have a hard time couponing because most of it just isn't for things that I purchase. I have started to plan our meals around the store ads that we get in the mail every week though. I ended up going to 5 places this week, but they were all within 1 mile of each other so it wasn't really a bad deal. Like I got 4 heads of cauliflower for $5, 4 bundles of asparagus for $6 and organic pears for $65/pd. We're eating wonderfully this week because I took the time to go to multiple places. We also buy onions, organic apples, organic mushrooms, organic baby spinach, and eco-friendly paper towels and toilet paper from Costco. I guess that's the biggest money saving thing that I'm doing right now. Not coupons, I know, but along the same lines!
We've started making our own cleaners as well but I haven't found "recipe" that I love yet.

I love a good sale and try to look out for them. I use to make a habit of clipping coupons, but it became more of a chore and didn't feel like it really did much good.
... I really don't buy most things I find coupons for.
Yeah, I had that problem when I use to clip coupons too.
That's my problem. I don't want to change what I eat just to use a coupon.
I feel the same.
Before when I would clip coupons, it seemed it would mostly be for something I didn't need or a brand I didn't use. Or it would be like .50 cents on 2 of something I would only normally buy one of. Or some deal on one or two things, but at a different store I don't normally go to. I don't really want to drive all over the place just to save a dollar. So it never seemed like much savings to me.
There is a new show coming on TLC I think called Extreme Couponing (http://press.discovery.com/us/tlc/programs/extreme-couponing/); I saw an ad for that and one of the ladies on there said she spends 4 hours a day couponing ... who has that kind of time?!
I do like sales and finding deals/coupons on what I use, at places I shop though.
I like these sites - www.iheartpublix.com - www.coupons.com - www.coolsavings.com I just need to get better about checking them before I go shopping.
Edit: I see others have mentioned the TLC show now ;)

Oh man, i LOVE using coupons! Sadly, i only get most of them when someone buys a paper on Sunday and leaves it in the break room because they don't want it anymore. XD I'll be taking those coupons, thanks!
I'm pretty sad Kroger doesn't let us combine digi/regular coupons anymore. :( What a pain in the butt. But they also send you coupons every month (usually GOOD ones, too) as long as your Kroger card is under the right address... Oh! and if you have a Kroger gas station near you.. USE IT!!! I usually save 50/70 cents a gallon every month.
I do have to say as a cashier :coolblue: do be careful of online coupons (i'm not saying don't use them) that they have water marks. I know we are not allowed to use certain ones that are over a $1 because people could be printing off more than they should and the manufacturers won't give us the cash for them.
Also! Learn the rules for your grocery stores. I know at my Kroger (i work at) for example, that we cannot take more than six of the exact same coupon, even if you buy more. When you take back bottles, we aren't allowed to cash more than $25 worth. :)

I've got a new little hobby that's resulted from this thread... Some of the blogs recommended writing to manufacturers, complimenting their products, and they will sometimes send coupons. So I've been doing that. My goal is to get to 100... but I'm only writing to places that I know for sure we'd use coupons for. So far I've got over 40, and I've had e-mail responses back from a lot... some of them directly say they're going to send coupons. Yay!
I'm keeping a list of all the ones I've written to, and then I'll make comments on the list if they send coupons and what they've sent. Then in a year or so, I might do it again... depending on the type of coupons they send.

I never see coupons for anything. Although i really should get a Tesco Clubcard. Where you earn points on the Grocery Shopping. Or in some cases, double points. Each point is one pence off your shopping with Vouchers. Which can soon mount up.
Because we kept moving house i never bothered to get a Clubcard. And used to give my points to the next person in the queue. Until one Christmas i gave my points to the guy behind me. And was told by the Checkout Girl i had in effect handed him £7.50 ($12.25) Which went on his card and onto his Vouchers the next time they handed them out. :bbconfused:
DOH!!

I got a cool response from Simeks, saying she was excited to tell everyone about my compliments at the meeting on Wednesday. They must not get as many e-mails as other companies. I also wonder if it's a more local brand. They make amazing frozen lasagna, amongst other things.
I'm excited to start getting the coupons to see what they're for.

I watched last week, and to be honest, it kind of seems like the "extremers" are kind of just hoarders. They made no mention of donating if something is getting ready to go bad, and really, can 2 people really eat 55-60 large bags of chips before they go bad?

I totally agree. I think any of us could "save" that much if we also spent 40 hours/week couponing and bought lots of coupons online. But our time is important too. Does spending dozens of hours to save money trump the money saved? It's so excessive.

Just today I found this amazing couponing story:
http://www.iheartpublix.com/index.php/2011/04/reader-spotlight-the-8-foot-receipt/
At Publix she SAVED $417.40 and PAID only $1.72 out of pocket. DANG! I don't know what she bought, but it doesn't sound like she's a crazy stockpiler, but really just trying to make ends meet.

We watch this show sometimes at work, there was one guy on there who bought like 50,000 boxes of cereal and paid nothing for it. He does a lot of his shopping for his church and their food bank so I thought that was super awesome. I'd love to learn more about this too, since I'll hopefully be moving out this fall and will need to save money. There was another lady, she's a retired nurse, I really liked her. She said she has no debt and basically only buys what she needs but never pays much. She walks a 4 block radius in a big city and picks up peoples sale adds to clip and at the store she helps other people shop and tries to educate them while giving them coupons at the same time. I thought that was super awesome. I love this thread!!!!

I've gotten some lovely coupons from my e-mailing companies experiment... I've got plans for some of them for next week at Walgreens... they've got coupons for stuff plus my discount and then the coupons. My favorite one I've gotten so far was for a pack of Energizer batteries, free up to $10.

We've been researching and reading up on all this to see how to get started. My mom and sister and I are going to work on it together. We figure with my mom having a part time job (like 8 hrs a week) and my sister being a stay at home mom and not doing any school this summer they will be able to keep up on clipping coupons and watching sale adds. Hopefully we can make it work, but you really can't start shopping til' you've saved up a few weeks of coupons. The great thing with working together is we'll be able to give my brother some food too since he's divorced now and paying child support and all that and really doesn't have much money extra anymore. We can also stock our church food pantry with extra and atleast be able to help out others. It really helps since my dad doesn't really bring much in his weekly paycheck.

I have noticed a lot of people at my work that are trying out couponing... They come in with their lists from the websites that make them for you and their stacks of 20 coupons for each of two transactions. For the most part, I don't mind that... but I do mind the people that cheat by photocopying home printed coupons and the ones that purposely try to use expired coupons. Yesterday was a first... someone tried to give me coupons that were originally from the paper, but they were photocopied.
In my own experimentation with couponing, I've found that a lot of the best coupons are online. You've just gotta print 'em out before the overall limit of prints hits. And I enjoyed my experiment with writing to companies.. it was fun to check the mail for about a week... I was getting stacks of envelopes. I even got three free Softlips chapsticks sent to me, by asking if they had coupons so I could try out their product.

Bought my newspapers today - I bought 6 and mom bought 4 so I'm sorting through it all right now and going to put them in a folder and just wait. :) I've seen that you really have to have a good month or more of coupons saved up before you can actually do well with the couponing so that's what we're doing. I'm hoping, if anything, I can help my parents get some free or low cost groceries to help them save some money. I know a lot of people don't buy unless it's the brand they use, however when you have a large household and limited funds, you kinda go with what you can get for cheap. I think it's great that some of the people say they NEVER pay for toothpaste or toothbrushes. I'm hoping that not only can we do that for our house, BUT I would love to be able to take some and donate them to Catholic Charities and the various other homeless shelters in the area. It's a great way to help others while helping ourselves at the same time!!!

Thank you!! I've sat down and started to e-mail or write different companies too and while I haven't had a great response yet .. i've atleast had some correspondance with different companies so we shall see where that goes. :) Anyone have any good buys this week? Maybe we should take pics of our items and how much we saved if anyone wants to... i'm working on a list for my mom to go and get tomorrow. On the list are the Pull-up disposable wet wipes - they are $1.46 at Walmart and the SScoupon for $1 off makes them .46 cents a package :)

Here's a pic and stats on how I did today. Well "I" didn't really do it per se b/c I had my mom actually physically do the shopping since I had to work tonight - however I did all the leg work and did all the math for her. I was a little pissed b/c she didn't really follow my instructions. I told her to go to Price Chopper first b/c the Wick laundry detergent was on sale for $3.49 and with my $2 off coupon made it $1.49 each. Which is really good, but no my mother purchased it at CVS for $4.99 each with a $2 off coupon so she bought them for $2.99 each. Oh well what are you going to do ya know? I just was mad that I did all the work for her and all she had to do was follow what i said. I still have like 6 more coupons so I'm going shopping tomorrow to buy more. It's nice because now we're going to have enough to do the kids laundry for a while - we're also giving some to my brother and our church pantry!! So here are the pics and stats..sorry about the rant ..lol
