Any bakers here? I LOVE baking and I thought it'd be fun for us to see what others have done. With pictures to drool over, of course!

Last night I made an orange chiffon cake with a chocolate glaze:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5298/5475017453_262563b032.jpg

I used this recipe (http://www.bhg.com/recipe/layer-cakes/orange-chiffon-cake/) for the cake, but baked it in an angel food pan since that's closer to a chiffon pan than the two round pans the recipe calls for.

Instead of the frosting I made a chocolate glaze using this recipe (http://www.food.com/recipe/chocolate-chocolate-chocolate-bundt-cake-with-chocolate-glaze-27144).

We had some last night and it is deeeelish! I think a real chiffon cake needs more than just 2 eggs, and the sugar shouldn't be whipped into the egg whites, so this didn't rise nice and tall like a chiffon, but still very tasty.

I'm not much of a baker, but occasionally I will make banana bread when I have a couple overripe bananas. And I love making quiches, but they are dangerous to have in the house. :lafhard:

I've been baking bread lately. I'm into the small artisan loaves because they make great gifts. :)

Here is my sourdough that I used to make. After Pete left, I couldn't keep up with the starter, so no more sourdough!

Also, I love making pies. My DH, Pete, loves pies. So that's my motivation.

Love the heart pie Katie!

I made a "fluffed up" box cake for DH's birthday the other day. I didn't take a picture, but I added orange liquor in place of the water in the recipe. Then added orange zest, orange extract and food coloring to the some regular butter cream icing.

What a fun baking thread. :) Everybody's goodies look so beautiful that I'm a little ashamed to show mine!! Today I tried out a recipe for garlic rolls for Paisley's birthday. I didn't have the kind of flour that I wanted, but I decided to experiment with the recipe anyways. I made this pizza dough recipe - http://allrecipes.com//Recipe/bread-machine-pizza-dough/Detail.aspx for this garlic roll recipe - http://www.mamajanskitchen.com/2010/04/easy-peasy-garlic-rolls.html. Just a little bit of tinkering and they're going to be amazing!!

Oh yum! I  this thread!!

Katie - I want to make bread so badly but I am so intimidated by it!! I read recipes and I'm like "what do they mean by that?" Like when they say punch it, do you really punch it?? LOL

Whenever I bake, it usually turns out like this:

http://www.visualphotos.com/photo/2x2911026/burnt_cookies_cb009850.jpg

I know that my main problem used to be that I needed a thermometer to be sure that my oven was the right temp and I burn stuff a little less than I used to...but all in all, I suck at baking.

^ Bread is really easy! When they say punch it, they mean its risen, just use your fist and push it down so its flat. I love baking bread!

I made some easy french loaves for church yesterday. It was so good, I actually had a few pieces. I never eat my own bread!

So one time, according to Flickr in August 2009, I experimented with making a green grape pie because I had all these bruised grapes. I know, sounds weird, but it was delicious! Tasted sort of like white wine since the grapes were a bit old, haha. I just boiled the grapes down, smashed them, and then added some corn starch to gelatinize the mixture a bit.

The pie crust is made from scratch and I made the top crust by using my crimped quiche pan as sort of a large cookie cutter. I decided to make the hearts since I had leftover crust.

I don't have an exact recipe, but for the dough I just followed the instructions on the back of my pizza yeast packet. Last time I went to buy yeast, I saw packets specifically for pizza dough! So I followed that recipe, split the dough into 4 smaller pizzas, 2 on each greased cookie sheet, and then just filled each with whatever I want, however much would fit. In this case I used low fat ricotta cheese, low fat mozzarella cheese, and some frozen (thawed & squeezed) spinach. I put all the fillings on one half of the dough and then folded it over, and just sort of worked around and crimped it closed. Then I cut a few slits on the top of each (so they don't balloon up) and brushed some olive oil on top. I baked according to the time & temp instructions on the yeast packet. But mostly I just watched it in the oven until it was browned.

Tonight I made a pavlova (meringue in sort of a cake form) with whipped cream & strawberries. I couldn't get the meringue stiff enough to make the well in the middle stay well-formed, so most of the whipped cream is just on top. On well, tasty anyway, but so so sweet. Probably not a regular dessert I'll make, but I thought I'd try it once.

Oh, whipped cream is so easy! Literally pour the cream in a bowl and whip with a hand mixer. It stiffens up pretty easily. To sweeten it, pour in powdered sugar a bit at a time as you mix. I flavored this one with a bit of orange extract. Before whipping I keep the (metal) bowl and the whisk for the mixer in the fridge so everything stays nice and cold.

I made cake pops with my friend this past weekend. I gave 90% of them away because they are dangerously addictive. I got a request for more for a family get together this weekend, so I might make more tomorrow.

I also made about 1,000 things with some spent grain left over from homebrewing a couple weeks ago. The best thing was dog cookies! I have some pizza dough frozen but yet to be used. The bread didn't turn out wonderfully because the grain was too chocolately, but I will definitely try again next time.

Here are the 2 recipes -

http://pleasantlyplumpvegan.blogspot.com/2007/11/caponata-perfect-pizza-dough.html
http://www.mamajanskitchen.com/2010/04/easy-peasy-garlic-rolls.html

I do let my bread machine knead and rise the pizza dough, then I punch it down and let it rise once more, and then follow the garlic rolls recipe. The one change I make is to drizzle the garlic oil over since I found when I tossed it in the oil that too much of the garlic fell off of the rolls.

Everything looks so delicious.

I wish I could bake. I think for me the reason I don't is because I feel like we don't have the right tools and ingredients in our house. We're simple people and I just don't have a lot confidence in my abilities to bake based on past experience and I don't have a lot space to buy extra supplies that may or may not get used.

As Paisley has gotten older, it's gotten a lot easier to get a few things done here and there...especially when daddy is home! ;)

Ashley, my advice would be to start out with simple things that don't require yeast. It took me quite a while to learn how to work with yeast and was very frustrating. I'm continually getting better though! I used to bake cupcakes and brownies a lot because the ingredients are few and they're pretty simple, even when they don't always turn out perfect!

I know most of you saw this on Facebook but here is the pie I made for DH last week. I have to say, its the best pie and crust I've made. The crust was absolutely amazing. It was so flaky and just melted in your mouth. I worked really hard on making sure I didn't add too much flour or water and I succeeded! It was just the perfect balance.

Here's the herbed bread that I've been making and freezing for Paisley's birthday. It is a basic white bread recipe with olive oil, garlic powder, dried thyme, and a lot of dried rosemary. It is so heavenly. I hope that it defrosts just as good! :crossfingers:

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e102/keelyhealthnut/photo-1.jpg

This is the puff pastry that we've made to wrap around veggie dogs to make "pigs" in a blanket for her party. We have had a heck of a time and went through several batches before we got it just right. I'm a little apprehensive about this recipe performing every single time! It's so labor intensive.
