This saturday, my fiance and I are going to look at some samples of different cakes made by the woman who will hopefully make our cake. The problem is is that I really have no idea what to do about the cake. I don't know what to expect. I am sure you have all posted pictures before, but could you post a picture of your cake or of cakes that you like? I just need some ideas because I am clueless! Thanks a ton!

There are many things to decide on with a cake. Today a lot of people are adding color to their cake or incorporating their theme into it. I skimmed your journal and I know you are having an outdoor wedding, but I didn't find your colors.
Another way to dress up a cake is adding fresh flowers or flower petals to it. You can have a simple white cake and add flowers. That can also help you with the cost of a cake.
Another thing to decide on is what type of cake you want. Do you want white cake, chocolate, etc. I have even heard of brides using red velvet. The sky is the limit. You can also have fillings. I am using rasberry filling in my cake.
Shape is another consideration. You can do round or square. You can have the tiers on top of each other or you can have them separate. Another thing getting popular is the use of cupcakes instead of a cake.
Here are some examples of the use of flowers on a cakes.

Another consideration is icing type. Fondant is very pretty. It is very smooth. However, I think it tastes horrible. I have heard they can put another layer of icing under it and then you can peel the fondant off, but I think that seems like a lot of trouble and I think it is very expensive.
Here are some more ideas:
Cake with chocolate icing

Fruit also looks very nice on a cake:

This is called Victorian Scroll:

This one is very summery:

Thank you so much for the help!
My colors are going to be red with some silver. I really just have no idea about what to do! My fiance is really no help either. I like the idea of the flowers. It adds a lot of color without being too much.
Thanks again!

Here are some cake selection tips I found:
Browse as many wedding cake books and magazines as you can find to decide on what kind of cake you'd like. Do you want something traditional, or would you like a luscious croquembouche tower of choux pastry balls? Does the simplicity and elegance of a single layer appeal to you, or do you envisage two, three, four or more tiers?
Traditional wedding cakes were made with a rich fruit and spices mix, but nowadays most couples choose flavors that appeal to their taste buds. Cheesecake, carrot cake, mocha, chocolate mousse and liqueur are all delicious variations for wedding cakes.
What colors appeal to you? Many brides choose the same tonings for the wedding cake as the bridal party will be wearing, but there are no hard and fast rules. A rich chocolate ganache covering a chocolate mud cake looks delicious, but no more so than an elegant white fondant decorated with either fresh or fondant flowers.
How many guests will be sampling the wedding cake? Your cake needs to be large enough to allow one slice per person. And don't forget to add an additional 10 slices (or a small tier) if you intend to preserve part of the wedding cake for your first anniversary.
A clever way to cut costs is to serve the wedding cake as dessert, or you can organize to have individual miniature cakes baked to be given to guests as wedding favors. Some couples choose to have a centerpiece cake with smaller cakes for each table.
Are you going to be a spring bride, or is the wedding in winter? The weather conditions have to be considered when choosing your wedding cake. The summer months are not a good time for mousse cakes or cakes that feature fresh cream, however, most types of wedding cakes work well in the cooler months.

A ribbon layer at the base of each tier also dresses up a cake.

I believe you can get more servings out of a square cake than a round one, so keep that in mind, too.

Here is what ours looked like. It was white with a black mendhi pattern taken from Middle Eastern Culture piped on it. (Our wedding was black and white but the pattern could be done in any color.) I didn't put flowers or a topper on it.

I was very pleased with my cake! To tell you the truth, I was worried because it was only two teirs that it wouldn't look right (three teirs would have given us WAY too much cake). But it actually came out really great. And was much cheaper than we expected!

We're doing red also, but with yellow. And I know that all of these cakes aren't red and silver, but I'm sure the baker could change the color. I just like these too:

I'm not sure if you are having your reception indoors or outdoors(well where ever your cake is going to be) but I would think about fresh flowers because the simple fact is certain bugs are attracted to the fresh flowers.
The place where I had my reception is indoors and they had a wedding party that had a 4 tiered cake with fresh flowers on it. Before the guest and such arrived, they went in and the cake was COVERED in ants/bugs.
Just another thing to consider. I'm sure you wouldn't want to pay all that money for a cake and it get "bugged."
They can also do flowers from fondant and I've seen many a cakes where they fondant flowers looked very real.

And of course another alternative to fresh flowers is the use of silks. The silk petals are cheap and look really good.

Thank you all so much for all of the GREAT ideas! There are so many beautiful ones to choose from! I think we are just going to go look at pictures and then see what her price range is and then decide that way. I don't want to fall in love with some really fancy cake and then find out it is way over my budget! Also, thanks for the tips. I never would've thought about ants getting into the reception area! You all have given me some really good ideas!
