*Sorry if this is not in the right area*
Okay, my sister called me Sunday to let me know that my niece has scabies. She wanted to let me and DH know because we are very involved in her life and we're always around them every chance we get.
Well, I heard from my sister Monday and she now has it.
And Last night I begin to itch VERY bad. I was just praying it was in my head but now it's doing it again today.
I feel dirty. Like ashamed. I know my niece couldn't help it and the pharmacist told us it's as common as head lice just more contagious but I had never heard of it before and I'm a little freaked out.
My sister said that she thought dogs could get it and we have dogs. So, I just hope I don't have it.
So, any advice? Has anyone ever heard of it or ever had it? What should I do next?

Oh goodness, I'm sorry honey. I don't have any advice - although I've heard of it, I've never had any first hand experience.
Did you google?
I work at an Urgent Care and people sometimes come in with it but since I work up front I have no idea how it's treated. I think they might be given an antibiotic or something...I do know that once they leave we have to disinfect the whole building and close down the room that was used for the rest of the day just to be on the safe side because it's very contagious.

Google freaks me out! I have no experience with Scabies. So sorry. :( I hope you're okay and your dogs are, too! Keep us updated.

I have heard of it, but never known anyone that had it.
Hope your neice is cured soon and no one else gets it.

I just read about it on Wikipedia. Looks like it cures pretty easy. No worries!
I hope things are okay! :crossfingers: I've heard of scabies, but really don't have any concept of what exactly they are...and I'm resisting the temptation to Google it!

Well, Google makes it out alot worse than the doctor did. Ugghhhh I don't want to go to the doctor. I'm going to give it until Friday and see if I'm still itching.

Heather - sorry didn't answer before b/c I didn't see this post - BUT
Our foster girl was diagnosed with it - her momma's house was infested with it...I'm sure it's not that bad for you guys - so here's what you need to do since we've been there done that already
If you have any types of red sores on your body - go to doc and get them diagnosed - if it's scabies what happens is the bug matures inside the skin and then "hatches" out of your skin - they prescribe a cream that you have to apply topically all over your body - it kills them. I think you have to do it a couple times.
As for the rest of the house -
Stuffed animals - bag them for 3 weeks or 3 months - I can't remember but air tight so it kills the bugs
Pillows - need to be cleaned on the "sanitize" setting of your washer and dried in high high heat - or just throw em' all out and buy new ones (could be quite costly)
Bedding - everything must be changed and cleaned again on the "sanitize" settings - act as though you have lice - everything gets cleaned in that manner.
Don't worry about the carpets - but if your whole house isn't infested you also don't have to worry about the couches.
Scabies is like head lice in that it is a bug that attaches itself to humans and feeds off them - they will not stay on non-human objects for long or they die so that's why it's primarily bedding and what not you have to treat. Hope this helps.

So after my niece was diagnosed with it I realized I had kept her a weekend when she had it. WWEEEELLLLLLLL....Now I believe I have it. I have been itching for about 4 weeks but this last week has been HORRIBLE. But I also just started tanning to so I have an appt tomorrow with a dermatologist so hopefully she'll get it figured out so I can get some relief.
I'm sorry you're going through this. I'll admit, I have had scabies and they are MISERABLE. I'd wake up at night itching so bad and I looked like I had poison oak on my legs. Ugh. To get rid of it.... very similar to lice - wash EVERYTHING - bedding etc, lysol the couches/beds, and there was a creme that the doc gave me that killed them and took care of the itching. I'd say wash everything then use the creme that day/night, then repeat with the creme every day, and wash the bedding every other day 'till it's all gone. (just my twocents!). I didn't have to see a dermatologist though - my regular doctor gave me the creme.
Good luck getting rid of it! I hope the dermatologist helps you out!

Yea, I just decided to suck it up and go to the dermatologist because I want to know exactly what it is and she can test it right then to tell me if it's scabies. My niece went to the same doctor so she'll know. I just wanted to know maybe if tanning was making it worse but either way I JUST WANT TO GET RID OF IT! Its weird though b/c FH doesn't have it...
