What sort of food do you and your family have during the holidays?

Have any recipes to share?

I don't think our families really do anything too special. We usually have a ham and/or turkey and typical stuff that goes with that.

Last year we just did like heavy hor dorves (sp?) and everyone brought something. I think we may do a little bit of a combo of both things this year.

DH and I usually do something at home with just us. Something like a small turkey breast; last year we grilled it. DH is thinking of trying to get a deep fried turkey this year. I don't know if I really want that (I'm afraid it will be greasy), but if that is what he wants and we don't have to cook it, then I will try it.

DH also mentioned wanting to do some sides and/or appetizers this year, but we haven't figured all that out yet. He just doesn't know that he is gonna have to help me make whatever we do ;)

On Christmas Eve it's a lot of finger foods. My favorite is Summer Sausage (like from Hickory Farms) cooked in duck sauce. We also do veggies, cheese and crackers, etc etc. We used to do ham, Italian Sausage, etc etc when we had the entire family over but it's now changed year to year. On Christmas we've rotated between Ham and Lasagna. I've been begging for Mom to do her homemade manicotti but that was always a New Year's tradition. I might have to start that up for Peter and I this year. YUM.

This year we're doing Christmas Eve at my brothers so I have no idea what we'll have. I bet he does a lot of the stuff we all grew up with. I still don't know what we're doing for Christmas though... hmmm.

On Christmas morning I'm surprising FH with Aebleskiver (http://find.myrecipes.com/recipes/recipefinder.dyn?action=displayRecipe&recipe_id=10000000663064), Danish pancakes his family does each year. This is the first time we'll be together on Christmas!

On Christmas eve, DH's family always does a bunch of appetizer type foods, like motzarella sticks and pizza rolls. They also usually do ham. And of course, there's always Christmas cookies!

For my family, it's always different. My grandma does turkey, and she makes the best sugar cookies. I think I might have to try and copy them one of these years... When I was growing up, there were a couple years that we had nachos on Christmas eve before opening presents. That was always good, and simple. And of course, there's gotta be lefse... my grandma and aunt always make a ton of it. I need to get a griddle or whatever they're called to make it myself... but the entire set is $170!

This thread is fun... it's cool to see other peoples' food traditions.

We always go out to dinner on Christmas Eve - usually to this Italian restaurant that has yummy bread. ;)

Christmas day my mom does Thanksgiving food. She used to do ham sometimes, but since I don't eat pork anymore, and we're all never together on Thanksgiving anymore, she decided that she would just do Thanksgiving for Christmas for anybody who missed it the first time around. Works for me. :) Yum!

The last few years for Christmas Eve we go to FH's brothers house, and they do ham and tons of side dishes, then on Christmas day we have been doing prime rib with my family.

This year, because my niece has a new baby and now she is torn between two families, we are doing Christmas Eve with her and my family, then just spending a quiet day home on Christmas Day. We are looking into a restaurant for Christmas Eve as we are all working most of the day, then we will go to my sister's so the kids can open their gifts.

I don't know what we will do for Christmas Day this year.

My parents go overboard on the food end.

They will usually buy a fruit and veggie tray and my mom will make her homemade veggie dip - yum! They usually get a cheeseball and crackers and have a nacho dip of sorts. Then there's always a tonne of sweets - cookies, fudge, squares, etc.

We usually have a turkey dinner with all the fixings on Christmas Day. And Dad always has a big breakfast for Christmas morning ready for us - with eggs, ham slices, bacon, hash browns, etc.

I love going home for Christmas for the food!
