View Full Version : Homemade Baby Wipes
We finally worked through the huge pack of wipes that we were gifted when Paisley was born so now we're making our own. We purchased some cloth wipes and I made a homemade spray in a small spray bottle. It's working out so well and we haven't had any diaper rash since we started using this. It's also so much easier since I can just throw the diaper and the wipe both in the diaper hamper.
I don't have any exact measurements, but I wanted to share this as I'm in the process of perfecting the solution. I fill 3/4 of the bottle with distilled water and then fill the rest up with one part olive oil to one part baby shampoo/body wash. I just give the bottle a shake, spray the wipe down with it, and use it as a regular wipe.
You can also put paper towels in a container, pour the solution over the paper towels, and make a disposable homemade baby wipe that way. Since we're CDing, using cloth wipes just makes a lot more sense for us.
This is the baby shampoo/body wash that we use -

That is awesome! I haven't heard of that before. Economical, better for the environment, and probably better for Paisley! Good job Momma!
There are a ton of different recipes online so I just took inspiration from them and came up with one that would work for us. The wash is cleansing and the olive oil is a natural moisturizer...and we just happen to have those ingredients on hand all of the time. ;)

I'm thinking that might be a good thing for my mom. She's not in diapers yet  but she is a bus driver, so having something handy like that would work, and we buy Olive Oil by the big liter, so we have tons of it on hand.

:lafhard: Yep, we get organic olive oil from Costco. I think that's the biggest deal we get from there!!

I use to work for a woman who CD and she used cloth wipes as well. I think she just bought a bunch of fleece fabric and cut them into squares and then used some sort of spray as well. You can find fleece that is pretty inexpensive.

We use cloth wipes. And we just do water and the shampoo/soap. I haven't tried with the olive oil. The soap we use has extra mosterizer in already since Carter's skin needs it. Love the cloth wipes though.

I just got this recipe from a friend of mine. We are still working through the disposable wipes that we got before Hannah was born, but we'll be doing reusable ones once those are gone!
RECIPE FOR WIPES CONCENTRATE:
1 cup Olive oil
1 cup Baby wash of choice (use something with no scents, no dyes, etc)
2 TBS Water softener (if you have hard well water, like we do)
Mix all ingredients in glass jar
Also add 2-4 drops of Tea Tree Oil to the concentrate - that keeps the wipes from getting funky...
TO USE:
Add 1 cup water to 2 TBS concentrate in a mason jar
Shake
Pour over cloth wipes
That's basically like your recipe, but she added the tea tree oil so the concentrate wouldn't get the wipes all mildewy. She makes up a batch of wipes and keeps them in a wipes warmer instead of wetting each one at a time. We don't have a wipes warmer so we'll probably put the solution in a squirt bottle.
Have you heard anything about the possible negatives associated with tea tree oil for infants? I had never heard about any of them until I was looking at wipe solution recipes and saw that some of them contained tea tree oil and others didn't and mentioned the risks. I just wasn't sure about it so I didn't use it in my solution. I don't even remember what the articles I read said though...

I haven't heard anything about it being bad for babies...but it is pretty powerful stuff so I imagine if it wasn't diluted enough it could bother their skin quite a bit. I imagine that if you aren't pre-soaking the wipes and letting them sit in the moisture then you wouldn't need the tea tree oil anyway.
I actually had been thinking about getting a wiper warmer. Hmmm.

Awesome! I think we will pick up cloth wipes when we switch to cloth diapers-I can see how it would be much easier just to throw all of them into the bin than have to separate the trash from the laundry!
