Wedding Journals look like a lot of fun, so I thought I'd go ahead and start one. :)

How we met....

Like so many other couples now-a-days, we met online. In September 1998, both of us were recovering from serious breakups that had happened some months before, so we weren't really looking for someone. We emailed for ages and eventually exchanged phone numbers.

We had a lot to talk about. Both of us have biology degrees (although I always intended to do my grad work in zoology and he really intended to pursue biochemistry). We both love travel. Although I do have to confess here that for me at that point it was still theoretical. But sometimes it seems like he's been everywhere. We're avid readers, we discovered that we loved the same music (our cd collections were practically duplicates of each other) a lot of the same movies. But we're drastically different too. We're really an odd pair.

Eventually he started asking to meet me. Now, like I said, I wasn't looking for anyone at all...and I'm terribly conscious of the fact that I'm not conventionally attractive. So I sent him a picture expecting that to end that question for good. He still wanted to meet! So I sent him another less flattering picture. And he still wanted to meet! Eventually I broke down and agreed to meet him on February 13th...essentially since neither of us had Valentines Day plans. Since it was the one year anniversary of my break-up I jokingly told him that my only other plans were to watch sappy movies with a bottle of schnapps (I had some syrupy watermelon flavored stuff in my cupboard.)
After getting lost, he eventually found my apartment. And I laughed and laughed because when I opened the door he was standing there with a teddy bear and a bottle of peppermint schnapps (We still have it!)

I love zoos, so we decided to spend the day at Northwest Trek. It's a wildlife park in southern Washington. We had so much fun. We had to hunt for a place to eat since everyone was out for Valentine's day (which felt distinctly weird). We walked, we talked. As it turned out, he worked nights at a lab, so he'd pretty much stayed up to spend the day with me. So by the time 9:00 rolled around, he was exhausted. I insisted that he not drive the 30 or so miles back up to his place (he lived north of Seattle, I lived south) so he spent the night on my living room floor.

Now, it's worth mentioning that my cat spent pretty much the entire night by his head. If there was ever a sign that he was the guy for me, I guess that was it. They were pretty much inseparable from then on. She ADORED him.

The next day we talked and talked and he ended up spending the night again. He told me later that he was walking on clouds for the rest of the week. And of course we saw each other that weekend as well. In fact...I'd say that we've spent less than a dozen weekends apart since that day in 1999.

How we decided to get married...

We'd been dating for several years, but always said that we wouldn't move in together until we set a date. We met when I was 26, so I was already pretty independent, living on my own, had my own place. But there did reach a point where it started to seem silly that we were living apart. We talked about marriage a lot, but it just never seemed like the right time for a variety of reasons.

Eventually, we acknowledged that we would get married some day, and moved in together. We'd been sharing a home for about 3 years when we decided that "next year" would probably be a good year to get married. Neither of us really pursued the conversation though. I was dealing with a new job, he had several massive projects occupying his time, and then we had to deal with the extended illness of a beloved pet. No lie. Teddi (the cat mentioned in the last post) meant everything to us. We both sobbed and sobbed when we realized that we were going to lose her to cancer. Our life went on hold for about 6 months while we tried to nurse her back to health and then dealt with her loss. I know it sounds melodramatic, but she'd been a part of my life for 10 years and Jonathan's for almost 7 at that point. We took it really hard.

It was in the aftermath, when we went about choosing a new kitten (that was a tough decision, but we realized that Teddi had us so well trained that it'd be a shame not to have a cat in our lives. ;)) that Jonathan realized that enough was enough. Now was the time. So how does he do it? He walked in to the bedroom one day and said, "I just told my parents that we're getting married in England next autumn." And all I could do was say that we'd better tell my parents then. And that was that. Not romantic, but right.

Yeah, we got two. They're so cute, how could we resist? Oh and yes, the names are from Tolkien. We're a couple of geeks. But in my defense, Jonathan picked the names. :)

The Venue...

Once we decided to go ahead and marry in England (his family is there) we just needed to decide on a venue. This was an easy and difficult decision. Easy in the sense that we knew where we wanted to have the wedding right off the bat...difficult in the sense that we had to look at a bunch of other venues so that the rest of the family could be sure too.

I was going to post a couple shots of the venue, but they're massive. I'll have to resize them tomorrow. In the meantime, there's a really great photo tour at this link:

Edited to add a couple pictures:

An indoor shot. I can't be sure, but I don't think this is my hall. As far as I understand, there are two indoor rooms for weddings and one is slightly smaller than the other. I have the smaller room. But you get the idea.

I know how you feel about your animals. If something happened to my dog Sadie I would just die. I also have 2 cats. Their names are Tiger Lilly and Blaze. About a month ago Tiger Lilly went missing for about a week. I was really worried and just a big wreck. Thankfully she came home. I still don't know what she was up to. It was around the 4th of July so I am thinking maybe the fireworks scared her off. Anyway, Teddi was beautiful and your 2 babies are also beautiful!

Wow! I'm glad to hear that you got Tiger Lilly back. I'd be beside myself with worry too. I'm glad someone understands about the pets. Our entire routine revolves around them it seems like. In fact, that's one of my biggest stresses right now...figuring out what we're going to do with the cats and the fish. The breeders have said that they'll board them, so we'll probably take them up on that. And I think I'm going to move my fish to a friend's house so that she can babysit them. I don't know what else to do. There's no way the cats can be alone that long even with someone checking up on them...unthinkable. And I'm not sure I'm comfortable paying someone to come in and feed the fish and change the water.

My parents and the wedding...

I knew that by having the wedding in England that it might mean my parents couldn't attend. But I'd resigned myself to that a couple of years before when it was explained to me that if we had a wedding in Seattle that they'd probably be unable to attend. And I'd grown up hearing her give advice to the effect that people should just get married in the park somewhere wearing blue jeans.

So I was very surprised at how enthusiastic about the whole thing she's been. In fact, for a while there I felt really bad that we weren't going to be able to include them. But they keep telling me that it's alright, that they'll come visit us in Seattle next year and that they'll visit England if we ever move there (which is about a 50 / 50 chance at the moment, so we'll see.)

I've been making a real effort to keep my mother included. And I told my father that since he can't walk me down the aisle, no one else will. So I'll be walking myself down the aisle. My mother is making us an embroidered ring bag at my request. I explained that by having something made by her there it will actually feel like they're there with us. We're also going to try to webcast (or should it be wedcast ;) ) the wedding so that they can see the vows as well.

Save The Dates

Since so many of our friends are travelling to the wedding, we wanted everyone to have a nice reminder. We chose the following Save the Date design at Magnets Street.

While I'm at it, I'll go ahead and post a few pics of Jonathan.

I took this one at the zoo about 4 months ago. He's looking just a little scruffy. ;)

Bridesmaids and their dresses...

Jonathan and I agreed a while back that we'd only have one attendant apiece at the wedding. And while that keeps things simple, it did make choosing my maid of honor difficult. I ended up asking my friend Erin since we've been good friends for about 15 years now. Unfortunately, she had to back out about a month ago because of a conflict with her job. Fortunately, my friend Masako has agreed to step in. Originally we didn't even think that she'd be able to make it, so it's sort of a bonus that she actually gets to participate too. And it's nice for me because of all my friends she's the most excited about weddings in general since she'll be planning one of her own one of these days.

I will also be having a junior bridesmaid. I know, I know, this breaks the whole one attendant apiece agreement. However, my future MIL asked very sweetly that we include Jonathan's niece. I don't mind at all...but I do think it's a little funny that my 13 year old junior bridesmaid is already 4 inches taller than I am. Yes, at 5'3" I'm the shortest person in Jonathan's family by far. I keep telling everyone that I'm going to look like a hobbit next to them.

Since Erin was supposed to be my MOH, it was very important to me that she wear a dress that she would feel really comfortable in. I had picked out three potential dresses and here's the one she chose:

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n10/JennGrey/bridesmaid.jpg

It works well since it's modest enough that I don't mind seeing a 13 year old in it. (I don't care how nice a figure she has...it wouldn't be right for a 13 year old girl to wear a strapless dress. I know her uncle and her father feel the same way. ;))

I held out on purchasing the dresses until we were 100 percent sure that Erin would be able to make it. When she cancelled and Masako accepted, I just didn't feel like going through the whole dress thing again. So I'm sticking with it. I ordered them a couple weeks ago and it looks like they'll arrive just before we fly out.

Latte is going to look gorgeous!

I ended up with the color wine because I'd mentioned something about wanting burgundy in my bouquet. My mother-in-law took it from there and pretty soon the candles and favors were in shades of burgundy. It's a good thing I love the color.

Jenn, we also have this BM dress in Victorian Lilac. We got them at David's Bridal while they were on sale for $99. We love them. But it looks amazing in the wine color, so rich looking. And, Nikki, I bet the latte is gorgeous too!!! :D

My Dress...

I dreaded dress shopping. I was absolutely convinced that it would be a humiliating experience. In fact, I assumed that I was going to have to get a dress made for me. So our shopping trip was just supposed to be a look see event.

We went to David's Bridal mostly because it seemed like there was an outside chance that they'd have something to fit me. Well, it turns out that I'm actually on the small end of their plus size line! Wedding dress shopping turned out to be so much fun!

I'd spent a chunk of time and money shopping for suitable undergarments. That turned out to be a waste of time since the first thing my consultant had me do was step in to a little closet and strip. She then dressed me in a bra and crinoline and started throwing dresses over my head.

I have to say, there's nothing like stepping out a room and having everyone say ooooh! And then the consultant made me go stand on a little raised area (which I have decided to egomaniacally call a pedestal). At that point I started plotting for ways to wear a wedding dress every single day of my life. I loved how I looked. I tried on four dresses that day, but decided that I needed to get away from the store to think before purchasing one. I'm so glad I did.

One of the things bothering me was the fact that all of the dresses I liked had at least a chapel train. Now, I haven't seen our venue in person, but I have been perusing photographers’ websites for weddings done at that venue (it's fairly popular) and I just didn't think that a long train would go over well. Third dress I tried on that day was perfect...and completely unexpected. I'd always imagined that I wanted something soft and simple with no embellishment. If someone had told me that I'd end up purchasing and empire waist, lace and bead covered, spaghetti strap gown...I would have laughed in their face! But it looks great on me. It's an A line...so I don't feel like it cuts off right under my chest. The bodice is very fitted and makes the most of one of the only things I like about my body.

Here's a picture:

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n10/JennGrey/dress.jpg

I love the train. It's just a sweep train, so not too long for me. (I love long trains, but it just wouldn't have worked.) And the train is just the lace overlay, so a dark floor shows through it and sets off the lace. I just sort of knew when I tried it on that I should choose it.

So, to sum up. I wouldn't want to do it again any time soon...but I loved wedding dress shopping!

Thanks! I love it too. My MOH is back in town and we're going to hang out tonight. She hasn't seen the dress yet, so I'm excited to show it to her. And hopefully her dress will be in soon since she hasn't seen that either (although she says she loves the picture.)

We finally finally purchased our plane tickets. That wasn't as painful as I thought it'd be because the price hasn't climbed as high as I thought it would.
We did book rooms for our attendants as well (The logic being that they're paying for airfare...the least we could do is give them a place to sleep.) We needed 2 rooms for 2 nights for them and the total on that came to 396 pounds (The conversion right now is 1.88 in case you want to do that math....I wouldn't recommend it though, it's painful.) So I can see that I'm going to have to get over my money stress pretty quick. Otherwise I'm going to be nonfunctional.

And hey! I'm getting contacts for the wedding. I've been wanting them for awhile and when the optometrist said that my prescription hasn't changed and I don't need new glasses, I decided to go ahead and take the plunge. I love it!

I sort of took the morning off becuase I had a Dr. appointment...so I did some errand running. I got so much done!

1. I picked up a couple passport size pictures of myself for my visa application. It's ready to go in the mail finally! I'm going to express mail it from my office tomorrow. Whew!

2. I picked out and purchased the fabric for my shawl. It's a beautiful silk blend. And best of all, it was on sale. I spent less than $40 on it. :)

3. I picked up the album that I think I'm going to use as my guest book. (More on that in a future post.)

4. I bought my shoes.
Viola!

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n10/JennGrey/Shoes.jpg

I wanted something fairly casual. And I can see myself wearing these again next spring. We're not going to do a garter toss or anything, so I'm not really worried about anyone seeing them. And since they were $60 on sale, they were the right price too!

JennF

Ok, after all the angst and fretting we finally picked out rings!

I wanted something really small with a low profile for me. I am not much of a jewelry peson. But I did want something a little different. I like it. Plus, the North Dakotan Lutheran in me is pleased by the fact that this one was about $500 less than the other one that I considered. (I didn't know that until after we decided.)

MY VISA WAS APPROVED!

Not that I was too worried, but it was the last big piece of paperwork that needed to be completed before I could leave...and it was the biggie.

Now I just have to hope that the whole package gets back to me within the next two weeks. (Two weeks, 1 hour and 38 minutes until we fly out!)

Edited to add that I got an email today that included tracking information. My Visa should arrive at 3:00 pm on Friday.

Hurrah!

So now that time is ticking away, my mind has started to turn to the finicky little details of the wedding. (Probably in an effort to escape thinking about the finicky little details of preparing for a 6 week trip.)

So, the guest book...

I didn't think we'd have one since we're only going to have about 30 guests. But then I saw an ad for a ridiculously priced album that's set up for poloroid inserts. It's an instantaneous photo guest book. Now, this is a neat idea, but I'm not going to spend $60 dollars for it.

Some browsing at a local department store turned up a really pretty book bound photo album (that just happens to be burgundy!) that has a lines for text next to each photo pocket. So I'm going to use that as a guest book and have someone take a digital picture as each person signs. That way I can print the pictures out later and make my own photo guest book.

The bonus here is that I can fix each picture by cropping or adjusting for color. That way they'll be way more attractive than a poloroid anyway. :)

The next couple of weeks are going to be hectic. We're going to spend almost all of tomorrow running errands to get ready for our trip:

1. Pick up the wedding rings (The had to order in Jonathan's size since it's tungsten, and I had mine sized up a smidge.)

2. Stop by the FEDEX depot and pick up my Visa.

3. Pick up a six week supply of our cat food and inquire about sedatives for the drive (It's a two hour trip to drop them off with the people who will be taking care of the cats while we're gone.)

4. Pick up universal adaptors for the laptop plugs.

5. Pick up my contacts.

6. Clothes shopping! (We both want to pick up on some basics that we can layer with since that'll help cut down on how much we need to pack. )

7. Purchase bridesmaid gifts (I think we're going with lockets.)

I feel like I'm forgetting something. But I'm sure it'll come back to me.

I don't feel like we have things under control. Lots of stress. I find that I'm not even really thinking about the wedding. It's all about that first day in England. I'm a little freaked out about meeting my future inlaws for the first time. They disapprove of overweight people (fair enough, I don't like the fact that I'm overweight either)...so there's one strike against me. And it turns out that sleeping arrangements are causing concern. so FH and I may not even be staying in the same house for the entire trip.

That said, I've traded a lot of emails with my FMIL, and she seems really nice. I think we've got a lot in common. So maybe she'll forgive me for being a fat harlot. :bbwink: That's keeping me sane.

I admit that I didn't read all of your journal and so, maybe I missed something but what reasons do they give for disapproving of overweight people??????!!!!!!

I am also curious to know why you can't stay together?

JennF
09-21-2006, 02:52 PM
Oh, I probably didn't post about that...since it all seems so silly. But apparently my FH's parents have pretty strong opinions about the kind of person that could let themselves become overweight. FH has acknowledged that there will probably be some conversation about that when I get there since I haven't met his parents before. I didn't mean to start a hullabulloo over that. I've known about that for years. It just makes meeting them a little stressful. I'll be glad to have that part overwith.

As far as the sleeping arrangements go, his parents have strong, conservative views about sharing a bed before marriage. I didn't think it would really come up since he's going to be in London for a major portion of our stay. I can't stay in London becuase I'll be telecommuting and since I work with databases, I need a fast connection. So I'll be staying at his brother's house. But it's causing some confusion because no one has more than one spare room. So it looks like for the times when he's not in London that he'll be in one house and I'll be in another. It's not like we won't see each other at all. It'll just feel like it. :)

I'm feeling better about the whole thing today. It'll all be fine. And we'll be married in five weeks so that won't ever be a problem again.

The flight was so long. I've discovered that I'm one of those people who can't sleep on planes. So for me the flight was pretty miserable. I was really short on sleep to start, so by the end of it my eyes felt like aching holes in my head.

I spent the weekend with Jonathan's parents. That was fun. I finally got to see the venue in person and I love it! It's going to be a cozy little wedding with pictures in the courtyard.

England has been great so far. I haven't done anything really touristy...but since it's all new I haven't really had to. I have discovered that it would take a long time for me to feel comfortable driving here. Everyone knows about the opposite side of the road thing, but the roads are a lot narrower here. I actually like riding around Suffolk in a car though. It's not hours and hours on a highway. Lots of times we're on twisty little roads between "villages". It's really pretty.

I'm pretty much on my own during the week. I'm spending the weekdays at my future BIL's house and weekends with my FMIL and FFIL. Since BIL is in London during the day I'm on my own. I do have to work, but I think I'm going to make sure that I go out and do something different each day. Apparently lots of things are within walking distance...and I'm going to try to sort out where the bus stop is too.

I'll have pictures soon. :)

Glad you got here safe - the flight is a nightmare innit? I cant sleep on planes either i discovered this when we came back from California earlier in the year!! How are you coping with the jetlag? It took me ages as we had had a night flight so i totally missed a nights sleep!
Have fun exploring - that part of England is beautiful! Take care xxx

Thanks everyone! I'm settling in ok. And fortunately I got my connection up to snuff so I can work effectively. I'm a day behind due to computer problems, so I've got a long night ahead of me.

I didn't sleep much at all before the flight...I think a averaged about 2 hours a night leading up to the day we flew out. Then we made ourselves stay up until 10:00 that night. So by the time I got to bed I crashed. When I woke up the next morning it felt like morning...so the jet lag could have been way worse. Sleep deprivation = jet lag cure apparently.

I'm finally back in the country. After 40+ days of travel, it's good to be home.

If anyone is interested, here are some of the professional shots. They're much lower quality than the actual prints, but you still get the idea.

It will not let me look even with the password. Ugh! I don't know why. I'm sure you were beautiful. I would like to add your picture to the beautiful bride page. Either you can paste a picture here in your journal or you can put it on the beautiful bride page yourself. I can't wait to see you in the beautiful bride page!

Gorgeous!!! You were so beautiful! I especially love the color of your flowers and BM dresses! I love the beautiful hats worn by some of the women, too! I love dress hats and I wish they were more common over here.

Yeah, all but one of Jonathan's aunts wore hats. And his Mom's was the best! She said one of the reasons she was so excited about the wedding was due to the fact that she could go hat shopping.

I'm going to go ahead and start a wedding day story and then after wedding journal. I've been super busy, but I've realized that I've missed everyone!
