How will you be presenting your food? Is it being determined by the time of day your wedding is?

Our reception started at 6. It had an hour of passed appetizers and cocktails. Then at 7 everyone entered the ballroom where we had a served sit down meal.

We just had all of the food out on a table, and everyone picked over what they wanted. We ended up with this menu:

Fruit Plate - Strawberries, Mango, Papaya, and Pineapple
Cheese Plate - Cubed Mozzarella, Cheddar, and Colby-Jack
Brie with Berries and Honey
Hummus with Roasted Pine Nuts served with Pita Bread Wedges
Chips and Salsa

Wedding Cake - White Cake with Strawberry Filling and Buttercream Icing
Groom's Cake - German Chocolate Cake

Tradition and etiquette wasn't a factor in my wedding much at all ;) We had our reception party (more of a party really, only friends came) at a local night club. So we just had bar food ... chicken fingers, chicken wings, cheese sticks, etc ;) We had free soda and water for everyone and a cash bar.

We did the buffet thing. Other wise I would have had to do a seating plan for dinner and I was not into that! lol. I was going ot go with a seating plan and served dinner until I started doing the plan and couldn't put it on paper nor did I care anymore!! :bbeek: lol. I figured people could sit where they wanted and I was too lazy and didn't care to make a plan!! lol

We are having a buffet style dinner...because it will allow for way more choices for our guests!!! We are also doing hors d'oeuvres and cocktails for an hour after the ceremony and before the dinner!!!

We had a formal plated dinner, began at 7 p.m. Time of day wasn't really a factor, we most likely would have done it that way regardless.

We are having a buffet style for several reasons. 1. Sit down dinners aren't very popular around here. 2. Our venue doesn't even offer a sit down dinner option. 3. We probably would not have wanted to spend the money on it if they did. 4. To me a buffet gives you more choices and less waisting.

We're doing buffet because of cost. It was much cheaper to do the buffet and they offered price breaks for the younger ones. I also feel that people will have more choices. Our cocktail hour will begin at 5:30 with passed hor dourves and a cheese and fruit display. At 6:30 everyone will pile in the ballroom for dinner that will start about 6:45ish...

I guess I should include my own ideas huh?

My wedding is still 9 months off but here are my ideas so far
(I am not having it catered because of the things that I want, it is just cheaper and easier to do it myself and not worry about it)

The big cold shrimp platters like from Sam's Club
Salad
Veggies (carrots, cucumbers, celery ect.)
Little Sandwhiches for those who do not like shrimp, and the children

Desserts:
I am going to have a candy/dessert bar:
Cookies
Pastries
Various candies
Chocolate Fountain
Things for the chocolate fountain:
Strawberries, pretzels, liquorish (sp?), pinapple, marshmellos

and that is what I have so far

Your menu sounds good May Bride!! :)

I thought of a couple more things that might be good... for the salty appetizers, how about some kind of hot dip with french bread pieces or pitas? Mmm, those are so yummy, and you can make them yourself in lots of varieties! This weekend I was at a party where they had veggie cheese dip in a bread bowl, baked brie with almonds, and buffalo chicken dip... they were all so great and homemade!

Another thought is you could make phyllo rolls or pinwheels to go with your sandwiches... also easy to do homemade, or get a big box of them at Sam's!

Last I had a suggestion for the chocolate fountain... we had one and I have no idea what fruits were there b/c they were gone when we arrived!! But we had marshmallows and graham crackers all night, and people made their own smores.
There was a really great website with a huge list of good things to dip, and I tried to find it for you, but this was all I could find for now... it's got a pretty good list and several tips on how to do it!
